I think I remember seeing somewhere that you should disable HTC Sense when you install another launcher. I installed Launcher Pro, am I supposed to disable Sense? And if so, how? Also, whats the best widget for the calender that shows a month or week view? I tried adding in the stock one, but it only shows one day.
menu > settings > applications > manage applications
then look for HTC Sense. tap it > tap clear defaults > tap force stop
if you've updated with the HTC update, i'm not sure if you can force stop it anymore because i haven't updated (and won't be)

ADW.launcher!, the Dev works hard on it, updates it a lot recently I have noticed a lot of bugs fixes with each upgrade. I really like the level of customization.
Yeah adw is a good launcher too. Its a tough call between that and launcher pro. They both have determined & attentive devs. I prefer launcher pro though. But adw is really good too.
I am a sucker for HTC Sence. I LOVE it. Tried ADW, I couldn't quite have an affair with ADW. Unistalled.

Maybe you're talking about an internet browser. We're talking about launchers. Basically new home screens that change the way your front page is laid out. You find these in the Android Market.
Wow, surprised ADW is getting beat by Launcher Pro here. ADW is much more customizable. I think it does everything LP does and a lot more. Love how you can change how fast the screens transition, whether they overshoot and by how much etc. And of course seemingly upping the resolution by being able to fit more stuff on the screen, changing the size of widgets, etc. Love it.

ADW doesn't do everything LP does. ADW is missing those cool app animations as well as the 3D app drawer that LP has, to name a few.
also, ADW does this weird gradient thing to the Android music widget. for instance, if you have the widget on another screen besides the home screen, and you flick over to the screen with the music widget, you can see what i mean for a split second. does the same for my touiteur widget. LP doesn't do this.

I think that app drawer looks cool at first but gets annoying. I like the Galaxy S style drawer on ADW. Speaking or which I have the Galaxy Launcher(new Touchwiz) on my phone as well to try out.

I like launcher pro, but the screen resolution sharpness seems to take a hit and I was getting some Force Closes. Not a lot to be a big deal, but definitely quite a few. I miss the customizable dock, 3d app drawer, landscape home, drop to uninstall, and 5 rows of apps.
But Sense just looks so much clearer of resolution to me, and the different scenes are awesome, plus all the widgets. And I loves me some Sense widgets, Calendar, clock/weather with graphics, email, people..... all that.
I went back to Sense as well, but really like LP. If they could do something about the Sense widgets and clear up that resolution, I'd be sold forevers. A few scenes wouldn't hurt either.
When I tried ADW, it doesn't allow your HTC widgets. No Friendstream, no HTC Calandar, no People, no HTC Music. No thanks.
Does anyone know if LP allows for these HTC widgets to be places on the screens?

I agree with you heavychevy.
Nope, you won't be able to use Sense widgets with LP or ADW, as they both disable sense. You would have to find alternatives, which are out there. For instance, you can use the built-in FB widget and the official twitter widget in place of Friendstream (Actually, when I did this, I noticed a pretty huge battery improvement). You can use Pure Calendar or Jorte for a calendar. Mixzing is a great mp3 player. etc.
You can change how much the screen "overshoots". Resizing widgets is a no, but you can make 5 rows instead of 4.
Tapatalk. Samsung Moment. Yep.
no you can't. you can give it elastic scrolling, but you cannot actually change how much it overshoots like in ADW. you can change the scrolling speed. but again, this isn't overshoot.
i think you may be confused on the overshoot.
edit: wow, Sense is winning over LP now lol
must be the widgets. like above poster said, you can find good alternatives to them

Friendstream is by far my favorite widget that I have. I have Twidroid Pro as well, but that widget needs improving. And we all know that the FB app/widget is worthless. I check Friendstream a couple times every hour when I get bored. That widget alone is enough to turn me off of the other launchers that don't allow it.
Sorry to get off topic. Resume launcher discussion. lol
I like ADW, I used LP and even paid $2.99 upgrade but it just crashed and hung my phone up too bad, so wiped phone and reinstalled but still had issues. Used it for a few weeks, but now I use ADW and it works better for me. Just my .02 cents.
I like ADW for one reason, horizontal app scrolling. Vertical scrolling is useless. Absolutely useless. Maybe if LP got this feature I would try it out again but not until then will I.
I have been using Sense from day one. I don't really see the need for a custom launcher and also try to avoid any frivolous app installing to keep my phone from getting all mucked up. With that said, I would though, like to hear from you folks that have been using other launchers and what kind of real world benefits my trusty Evo could gain by going down the custom road...
I use launcher pro because it looks much better, I can customize what apps I want in the launcher dock, and the ability to hide unneeded apps in the app drawer to make the ones I want to use easily accessible. Also I am rooted and have a custom rom and backups set up, so I try almost any app and don't really worry about messing up the phone.
I would say for most people the one they choose is based on aesthetics, which will greatly vary from person to person.
I tried ADW and liked it (ended up purchasing the EX version). I liked it better than LauncherPro because I felt like it was more customizable, but they were pretty similar. I ended up using it for a few days and switched back to Sense, though. I think I just like the more "polished" feel of Sense, which admittedly I'm a big sucker for. Beautiful Widgets comes close to replicating the Sense clock and live weather, but in my opinion just doesn't look as good. I also got used to using the People widget with 9 of my favorite contacts as my main method for calling/texting people, so not having quick access to my Favorites in ADW was a big drawback. Now I just wish HTC would step up its game as far as screen transitions, animations, etc. for people like me who enjoy such useless eye candy.
I recently bought ADW EX after using the free ADW for a long time. I really enjoy the customization and don't regret the purchase whatsoever. Also, I don't really feel it slows down my Evo at all. I do miss some of the Sense widgets at times but not enough for me to stop using ADW.
I tried ADW for a while but then switched to Launcher Pro because it had something else that ADW didn't have I forgot what since it was so long ago. I then purchased the Plus for Launcher Pro. I have never looked backed at HTC Sense. The customizable dock is awesome and gestures that you can assign to what you attach to the dock is a neat feature too.
The developer is currently rewriting LauncherPro from scratch so I expect to run even better then it does now.
Gives me the two "Sense-like" widgets that I want the most: calendar/agenda and people. Very customizable and loving the fact that I can overlap widgets.
How strange that before I created this thread and poll, I did a search for "launcher" and this old thread and poll that seems eerily identical to mine did not exist, yet somehow my thread just became a post on this thread that is identical to the one I started. I must be in some strange time vortex. Checking my prescriptions.
I was using LP up until I switched to Cyanogen which comes with ADW. I liked it so I bought ADW EX.
I was going to give LP+ a try to compare both the paid apps but it was the day that the LP web site went down and a version of the app "expired" and locked a bunch of people out of their phones. That kind of made up my mind. Not going to install a launcher app that behaves like malware.
Here's my current home screen. It's a bit of a work in progress but I have most of it done.
The globe icon is a mini app drawer that has all my web features. Browser, FB, Twitter client, news feeds and email.
The monitor icon is my media app drawer. It contains Music, Kindle app, FM Radio, Gallery and google listen for podcasts.
The far left is frequent contacts.
The screenshot doesn't do the text clock justice. The transparency and blur on my screen for the out of focus text looks far more clean and is an intended part of my theme. Not sure why the SS app made it look quite that bad.

this is why I really dislike adw. the side flopping pages just feel weird. the app drawer felt clunky to me.
launcher pro runs great on my phone, love it. I can't wait until fede releases his ground up version
here's my screenie

Nice screen shots, but I cant let go of Sense, it just works. I tried LP and the one thing I love sides the smoothness of the Launcher itself was that it allowed me to view the homescreen in landscape
I am a fan of the Sense launcher. I know the odds are against me in this post. I will admit from using ADW EX and Launcher Pro. They are a tad bit smoother than Sense. But that doesn't mean Sense is slow. I will say with the other launchers you seem to get a little more customization. But in my opinion the email widget is not replaceable. I use it on every scene I have set up. And also the widgets just look the best in my opinion. Now I will admit Sense needs a make over. I have switched and use other launchers for a week or two but I always go back to sense. In my opinion it just works. Honestly for Launcher Pro Plus, if Google is not allowing him to sell his paid app on the market I don't want it. And ADW EX is awesome, But there are no widgets. So again I like the other launchers but Sense is well put together. It handles every need I have.

LP, 1 home screen, just open the app drawer to get to apps. Simple but clean.
I run launcher pro also and love your screen. I have to ask how you got the words on the bottom instead of Icons? How did you get your lock screen to look like that? And what did you use for your time and date? You are using the EVO right?
You can use either in ADW. Mine looks exactly like the LP 3D app drawer.
oh, i've always seen people post that they like the side scrolling app drawer in adw so when i tried I thought that was it. i really hated it.. lol. i also don't use the 3d app drawer as it feels like it slows things down a bit.

For the first several months that I had my EVO, I didn't try any launchers (quite frankly, because I didn't know what the heck they were...coming from a WinMO phone, that concept was a little foreign to me).
I first tried Launcher Pro. First thing I liked about it was that it had the scrollable dock that can fit up to 15 apps (if you use the maximum 3 scrollable docks w/ 5 apps on each). 2nd thing I like a lot was that it enabled the phone to go into landscape mode, while scrolling through the different homescreens. I wasn't too in need of having to pay to get the "extra" stuff, like the widgets, so I just kept switching between LP and HTC Sense UI.
Then, all of a sudden, the more apps I downloaded, Sense UI became REALLY laggy. I compared it to when I'd use LP and it was like day and night. LP, although still had a little lag, was nowhere near as laggy as Sense UI was. After debating for a week or so, I finally decided to go ahead and support fede and pay for LP+.
Now that I've been using LP+ for a couple months exclusively, I can't see myself going back to using Sense UI (unless they make it more customizable as well, not just widgets). I'm a BIG fan of being able to see my entire wallpaper while scrolling through the different homescreens. Whether it's transparent icons, the transparent scrollable dock, etc...LP+ was just perfect for me. I like the "Sense-like" widgets, but I do have to agree with one person that said that the Sense UI widgets were slightly better.
Nontheless, the FRIENDS widget is probably the only thing I have to complain about. For whatever reason, even though I have it linked to the FriendStream app, it will not ever update my Twitter account whenever I post a thought. I don't know if this is a LP (or LP+) issue, but even when I open the FriendStream app directly and try to post in there, my Twitter account still doesn't update w/ my post. Maybe somebody that reads the LP forums more often knows the solution? - EDIT- Nevermind about this last tidbit. After searching through the forums, I realized that somehow the twitter feed was unchecked to be updated. Fixed that and all is well!
