It came directly from HTC's servers. Sounds pretty official to me.
...unless they are rushing to make last minute changes on a Sat/Sun. That's fishy sounding to me given the amount of hoopla they created with the announcement. How on earth could it not be ready with an announcement like that?
I think they are just trying to get the genie back in the bottle until Monday.

HTC File renamed "update.zip". Load this into your top level directory on the SD card and follow the instructions HERE
EVO Froyo 2.2 <-- I'm hosting this, so please be gentle!
According to HTC, this is NOT the final build, but I've had it on my phone for about an hour now and have no apparent issues.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Although this is the EXACT file HTC had up on their website, I do not take responsibility for you screwing up your beautiful EVO.

Agreed. Just saying it seemed legit given it was from their site, and the version number matched the release info on Sprint's web site. There was almost no reason to question it. Seemed like a no brainer. Just glad I didn't install.

Curious as to what effect this "non-official" update will have with the official update? Will the OTA overwrite or update the zipped version everyones installing today?
Does it feel faster? Apps loading faster? Hows the browser? Still choppiness in scrolling? (FPS still locked at 30)
to be honest - I am a little disappointed, yes it seems faster and more responsive, flashlight, sharing apps ... all cool. I just don't like the bloatware SENSE. Will root ASAP ... oh, and for some reason I was hoping for vanilla lock ...
You guys really cant wait 4 more days for an official release, and rather install this update that is not recommended per HTC. I am just excited as the next guy, but ill wait till the 3rd and receive the update properly.

Lets try to keep these threads in one place. No need to do so many threads cluttering up the forum.

Update: HTC just shot us a message to clarify that this is not the final ROM version and that the company is strongly recommending not to install this. Additionally, a request has been put in to remove the file from the server, so if you still want to try at your own risk, better download now while it's still available

See, this is the problem. HTC placed this (what I believe to be final) update on it's servers. It was found and spread on the internet like wildfire. HTC realized their mistake, pulled it, and are now backpedaling, saying "install at you're own risk!" to scare you.
If this "unofficial shady and incomplete" versions bricks phones or prevents the "official" OTA update from working, Sprint & HTC better brace themselves for some angry support calls. Even though users were warned not to install, my gosh human nature and geekiness sure does encourage us to install something that was just on HTC's own servers hours ago.
So, I stand by my opinion that some IT dude put it online too soon and it was found. There is nothing wrong with this version, HTC just wants the roll out to jive with their ever changing "launch date."
This is what happens when the "OMG we have tEh frist launch of FroYo!" announcements go out so early with a footnote that a test version will be available on 7/30. Now they are backpedaling. Just doesn't smell right.
Strange botched launch HTC & Sprint have here. Oops.

Just updated it. Seems to be working fine. Swype is not working.
Also, before the update, I cannot get 4G signal to stay. It would say 4G Signal Found and then will go way in like 15 seconds. Now, the signal stays. SpeedTest showing 3.1M down and 1M up.

Note: Flash appears to be working on my phone, so I'm not sure why others are experiencing issues.
I'm sure this is going to be completely submerged in the thread, so I'm quoting it.. I'm hosting the file HTC took down. (http://97.74.44.48/evo/update.zip)

You prefer I close the thread being that "according to HTC its not Official" or try to have all these multiple threads in one place. Because its getting to that point IMO.
At the rate these other threads were popping up, I had to act quickly.
If there are any problems with installing or any error messages feel free to post in the other Official Install problem thread.

I understand why you merged the others, but I thought one sticky with a warning heading would have been good. Or at least combine the two in the first post.

Feel free to make that post and I will sticky it and close it so that it doesn't get out of hand. Just pm me when you do.
I asked HTC on Twitter why we are to believe this version isn't final, as it came from their servers. I attached their response.
I then asked them why, if it's not final, do the version & file numbers match exactly to those on Sprint's EVO site. No response.
Well, whatever the case, I just don't see why they don't release the final version to us geeks who are clamoring for 2.2. I mean, it's a good thing, you know HTC?
Apparently they aren't finished with it. That's kinda scary at the eleventh hour...

WOW! WAY TO GO HTC! I APPLAUD YOU AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU DISCUSS ME ON HOW YOU TRICKED EVERYONE TO THINK THAT THEY COULD MANUALLY DOWNLOAD THE OTA UPDATE IF THEY DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT.
WAY TO BAIT EVERYONE TO BETA TEST FOR YOU!!!
HTC ENGINEER: "Ok everyone, we have enough beta testers out there. Let's pull the file from the server and let's see what has broken. This way we can release Froyo when we finally havea stable build."
Sorry for you people who jumped the gun on this, but it's not like myself and others on this board didn't forwarn you PLENTY of times! WAIT!

I wonder how many HTC Engineers are combing these threads right now....
I hope I can update to with the official OTA update in a few days now.
2.2 workin' fine though.
This is the reason I'm afraid to update (*bravo, HTC, you successfully scared me*).
I just wish there was more transparency around this whole update release snafu HTC created. They are being quiet on purpose to make people nervous. Well done, but they are the ones who created this mess. I'll remember this.
If I do decide to update and the OTA doesn't work, I'll just visit the Sprint store and act dumb. That or file an insurance claim.

Wow here goes another one. Tricked everyone to manually download the OVER THE AIR *yea had to BOLD it* update, that just so happened to not be available at the moment?
my update proceeded, in spite of that message. i had the file named correctly though. checked it in astro ON the card.
Thanks for your post, I was getting concerned my eyes were failing me in terms of the instructions. After seeing your post, I was good in less than 10 minutes and got the congrads screen.
