well it had to happen at some point. i am still gonna wait for when my upgrade is due which is at the end of this year to upgrade.

As long as I get Free Wireless Tethering on my EVO, I am keeping it active. I have 10 year tenure and can upgrade every year, but unless I can get Free Wireless Tethering, I am NOT giving up this phone. Hopefully Hesse's big announment is WiMax2 with better penetration. Then will upgrade my phone, unless Sprint gets the SGS2. I use Tethering on my Xoom and 3DS Alot.

Can you tell me how you get free wireless tethering? I can do wired tethering using pdanet, but i am not aware of a wireless tethering solution. The only wireless option I am aware of with the evo is the wifi hotspon option, which is not free.

1. you have to be rooted. (do some research and reading before asking questions about what is root)
2. then you can use many options to get FREE wifi app that are in the market... and a few mods over at xda.

Get a Sprint HTC EVO 3D. You will not regret it. I still wonder why people make their purchasing decisions based on the stigma of 3D. You can use the Sprint HTC EVO 3D without even making use of the 3D and still enjoy the benefits of the awesome hardware specifications.

Yeah -- I think you're right... I'm not big into the "3D" scene, as I said. I've fallen asleep in every 3D movie I've seen and most 3D stuff gives me head aches... But like you said -- You don't have to use the 3D feature. Thanks again.

That's hard to say. Sprint stopped giving out updates to the Samsung Moment shortly after it's release but that wasn't a popular phone like the Evo 4G is. But Sprint may not give us more updates due to them wanting us to upgrade more quickly too so...we'll have to say.

Haha. The Sprint Samsung Moment was released in November of 2009 and got the Android 2.1 update in May of 2010 and might have had a maintenance update or two in between that time. They did support it for a while, but to a lesser extent than the Sprint HTC Hero. I would agree it is because it was not as popular of a handset compared to the Sprint HTC Hero.
The bottom line is that I think Sprint and HTC are being a bit more proactive with their new handsets. They seem to be supporting them a bit longer now, and that is especially true with the popular ones.

I've been thinking about getting this phone for a long time and now I finally am switching to sprint so I can finally get it.
But I looked on the coverage map and my area is only 3g..should I still buy this phone? Would it still work in 3g area?
I don't want the 3d because how the screen looks hurts my eyes if I look at it for a while. I'm not sure what other (newer) phones are there..but I just really wanted the Evo! ahaha

you can still get the evo 4G. if you want to be 100% sure and not believe what you read on the internet, call up your local CORPORATE store and ask them flat out.
Sorry for the novel that follows but I wanted to express my thoughts on what's new with Sprint and the end of the EVO.
Up until I became a Sprint customer I didn't know much about Android, and I wanted an iPhone because I loved my iPod touch which of course is just lacking the calling feature. But then I met my now boyfriend, who works for Sprint and I quickly became enthralled with the Android system.
My boyfriend tried to convince me to get a Samsung but after I had a moment with the EVO I was only interested in the EVO 4G and nothing else. My phone became my favorite possession and I started learning all about the phone biz, and eventually even became a loyal Sprint fan, since their the only company that I could use as much data as I do and not go bankrupt.
Anyway, the point is, I have been wanting to either replace my current EVO with another one, or something undeniably better. But now Sprint is discontinuing one of the best things that has happened to smartphones and I still haven't found anything that tempts me to get something newer.
The EVO 3D is not at all something I'd replace my 4G with. I just don't like it...the design, the lack of kickstand, and the 3D isn't impressive and I think that the larger memory is the ONLY thing I appreciate about it.
The Photon is cool but it didn't strike me as that special. And at least at my bf's store the reaction was Meh, and half the Photons he sold were returned and exchanged for EVOs in every case.
The Epic Touch is the coolest phone I've seen in a while and I briefly considered getting one, but I still haven't grown to love the OS. But I like it bc it's a great phone and has created huge buzz. But now that I've tried it, I wouldn't replace my EVO yet.
I know it sounds silly, but I think the EVO is still an amazing phone despite the disappointing specs...it is slow compared to the newest phones and the battery is infuriating at times, but I *love* it. Everything I want in a phone I can get from an EVO. The look of it is attractive to me more so than any other phone, I find the weight ideal and HTC sense is by far my favorite OS.
I've had to get used to working around the EVO's shortcomings but have decided that I will be an EVO 4G owner until Sprint has a phone that makes me feel as awed and in love as the EVO 4G. Outdated it may be but the perfect phone for me.
My hope is that HTC develops a new EVO for Sprint that is as beautiful as the 4G but improves on things like memory, storage and battery. HTC is my favorite brand and I somehow strongly want Sprint's next flagship phone to be an EVO that manages to make waves like the 4G did. Even today I'm sitting at Sprint as I type and two people bought the EVO because its being discontinued. And this store sells more EVOs than the Photon and only the Epic Touch is selling as well in this area.
A phone is just a phone, and its not something I should feel so passionately about but I have become a geek over smartphones since becoming an owner. A part of me understands that Sprint wants to have the newest and support their other big name 4G phones but I also think its stupid to kill a phone that is still as popular as the EVO is and I will be extremely disappointed if they don't do something impressive with their EVO lineup in the near future.
Does anyone else feel as sad about the EVO's exit as I do? Or hope that the next must have phone from Sprint is an improved and buzzworthy HTC EVO? And do you think Sprint should continue to work with HTC and keep the EVO name alive or is HTC old news?
I don't feel sad but proud to own an Evo it really was a game changer,Sprint should work with HTC to make another Evo phone (it has to have the same wow factor of the original to keep the interest similar to Verizon wig their Droid line) .I know for sure I will hold down the Evo until a true step up phone comes out.
Agreed; hopefully Sprint (and HTC) will introduce a new phone as avant guard as the EVO!! (Even including a reliable and durable charging port!)
Lol lets not forget about that infamous charging port ,I noticed its not only with our Evo's when I had their windows mobile phones it became loose to.
The new EVO Design 4G has been leaked, and I have to say, while I like the look of it more than the 3D, it doesn't seem to beat the EVO cosmetically and the specs I hope are no longer accurate because otherwise it doesn't seem worth it...

that is considered a mid-range phone.. not a top of the line...
so it is only a little better than the 1.5 yr old evo
Which to me doesn't make any sense, and I think releasing a mid range EVO that's not a real improvement over a phone that was just discontinued. Gah it just irritates me.
No doubt that the EVO is the greatest phone I've ever had. It is Sprint's best selling phone ever. I was going to get the Epic Touch but I'm not eligible for an upgrade till April 2012. In the end, I'm glad. It made my disicion easier and decided to keep the EVO a little longer. I'm looking foward to 2012 and see what beasts of phones will be out then.
I like my Evo, it's been my first smart phone and has been an experience, even with half the time I've owned it having voice to txt and the camera all but un-useable, I still like it. I am however not going to forget that HTC and/or Sprint and/or Google screwed up the half-assed software update so much and let it hang that way, nor will I forget that they purposefully short changed the phone in some areas to maintain an upgrade path or some such(internal storage space, and not being able to move half the apps you don't want anyway). But anyway, I have enjoyed it, and will for another year most likely. I'll be looking for something other than HTC next time, just on principle. I might not find it, but I'll sure look.

just because its reaching EOL and they aren't "making" it anymore, if you try to get an evo *replaced* via insurance, don't you think they'd still have abunch of refurbished evo's they could send you instead of an EVO3D/Nexus S/etc?? especially with sprint buying back so many evo's as a trade-in for the photon & epic touch 4g? i'm asking because i'd love to upgrade to the evo3d because of the increased storage, the awesome updated version of sense, and i think the 3d on it is cool to show off. i'd be willing to pay the $80-100 deductible if it guaranteed i'd get a 3D back instead of a refurb'd EVO4G.

you are right..
there will be a lot of refurbs available for warranty needs.
it will be about 1 yr from now before they look at giving you something different.
they give you a choice to get a different device.. when they have tried many times to correct an issue that can not be satisfied by a replacement. ex: can not get good service in a place they know is well covered.
My kids need new phones, they are currently using tired Samsung Moments. Today though Wednesday the EVO is free plus activation fee unless its a new line. My question is would the original EVO be a good choice to hold them over for 2 years? Best Buy has the Photon for $50.00 plus activation but I am a little leery of that phone. My kids are not big gamers on their phones, they use them for texting, pictures, gps and occasionally as a phone
Keep in mind that the Evo 4G is EOL (End Of Life), so it no longer receives software/security updates or bug fixes. I would recommend finding out if Sprint will even support this phone anymore.
Never thought of that. They had the 3D's for $50.00 plus activation last week but I waited to long. I probably should have jumped on that but I was not happy about the activation fee being waived for new lines or new customers only so I hesitated.

The 3D is a much newer phone.
Don't get me wrong, the Evo 4G is a nice phone if you're not a devout gamer. I'm currently on the Evo 4G and, rather than upgrading soon, I'm planning to hold onto it for a bit and see what Sprint offers over the next few months. So, if you don't mind the fact that this phone won't see anymore updates it might not be a bad idea for the kids. I use mine for web surfing, gmail, google+, texting, gps, news feeds, shopping Amazon, and reading kindle ebooks and it's not a bad device.
The question is will the kids get bored with no updates during the next two years?
Also, I'm not sure if this phone will work on LTE when Sprint implements it. How long will wimax phones continue to be supported by Sprint?
As a stock phone the evo 4G is just about at the end of the line. I love my OG evo, but I'm rooted. I can change it as I see fit.
Development for this phone was huge from the beginning, so the root community is strong still.
If your kids have strong computer or tech skills, they may enjoy the root side of the evo for a little while.
Ard is correct tho, if you're going to buy new phones at this point in time, you "may" want to get a newer device.

Its free on sprint right now. The EVO 3D is 199 and the Epic 4G is 199 as well. I'd rather just save 199 dollars.
I'm not an advanced phone user by any means. I mainly just text, browse. I will probably use some apps though.
I know they are gonna stop making android software updates for the evo 4G....but is that really a big deal? What do these updates do? Would the phone be good enough to last 2 more years? Will they still produce maintenance upgrades for the Evo 4G?
Basically what I am trying to make sure is if the phone has a certain level of performance/speed now, will it remain at the level of performance for the following 2 years or will it's performance degrade and issues arise because of lack of updates?
I don't really care if the newer phones are receiving updates that make it better than the evo 4G in the future, but just that EVO 4G stays at the same level through the next 2 years.

The Evo 4G is already EOL (End Of Life), it won't receive anymore updates - maintenance or otherwise. Also, carriers are moving to LTE and the Evo is a wimax phone so I would be more worried that it may lose its ability to connect at all during the next two years.

I just got an EVO 3 months ago but I got it for free on a 1yr contract with a $25 Visa GC . And it's my business line that had been using the same BB Curve for 3 yrs . If they would have offered me the same deal on a 2yr I would have declined it's a great phone but it's not worth $200 IMO to be locked into it for two years when it's already at it's EOL
