I have a friend who has an HD2 and yes it is quite nice. At the time that I saw it I did not know that the size of it would be <<clapping hands together, "My cousin Vinny" style>> "Identical" to the Evo.

This is more a "Sense" question than an Evo question so excuse me, do you know if you can name the different screens in "Sense UI" as in this is my "Work" screen, my "Weekend" Screen and so on?

why do this unless you want attention averted from EVO? There June release event is also getting closer, I would imagine news from either camp will begin to spew out to the masses shortly enough. Then I wonder will HTC and Sprint be able to subdue the iphone masses into joining the ranks of Android and EVO? Time will tell.
You know...your post started me thinking. In the beginning I wanted an iPhone on Verizon....so I could join most of my family on that carrier...waited...then the Droid came out. Didn't really care for it and thought...dang...I've held on to my Katana for close to 3 years...what's a little more time? In the process I stared to become very interested in Android...and the possibilities. And along the way I've waited for several phones...completely losing interest in the iPhone...and actually feeling a bit contemptuous (did I spell that correctly) of Apple. I realize we have Apple to thank for much of the technology push...and they make a pretty solid product....but their philosophy...and arrogance....and attempts to shut down competition are a bit aggravating. Still...it's very interesting to see what they are coming out with...and it looks like the android phones have pushed them forward quite a bit. Every review in the past gave the nod to Apple for their very friendly and easy to use OS...and I know people who are just in love with their iPhone 3G. So what's happened to me...have I become an Android fanboy? Maybe....and this is a little disturbing. What would I do if Apple were to release a competing 4G WiMax capable phone on Sprint....hypothetically of course...about the same time as the EVO 4G? I know I would at least want to read a few reviews...but there it is....in the back of my mind creeping out is the fanboy side saying....nope!....it's the EVO 4G for me! So...it's interesting what 7 months will do to ones outlook! And even though I've said I think the EVO 4G could steal the show..I'm starting to doubt my own words. I think with phones...like politics...the truth and substance doesn't always carry the day...it's all about perception. I hope things go well for the EVO...and that I get one in my greedy paws before I go completely mental!

Yes, you can create custom themes and switch between them.

I can only go off of my experience with the Eris. you can't name different "screens", but you can name your different "scenes". Each scene has 7 home screen panels. It comes preloaded with scenes something like: work, social, travel, etc. The only thing that sucked on the Eris was, HTC preloaded these scenes with what THEY thought should go in them. You cannot make changes to them and them save them under that "work" or "social" scene. You'd have to save it under a completely different scene. So, in that case, their preloaded scenes are pointless unless you feel the widgets/apps in the given scenes are exactly what you want/need.

Hope this makes sense, and hopefully they updated their Sense with the ability to save changes to their preloaded scenes.

I'm not the authority on Android, but with my HERO running 1.5 I can. There called scenes. Each scene has 7 screens to customize and then you can save depending on what you need it for. Hope that helped!

I am no fan of any one OS, but if I had to chose it would be Android. I will say this though. Look at iphone and what it does and does very well, then look at the article I posted and question this... If Apples iphone does it so well, why then do they want to copy what Android already has done.

The way I see it, I gave up Web OS for Android because they both did the same thing, but IMO Android just did it a lot better, now iphone is trying to come along like a parasite and suck the life blood out of Android becuase of what it's becoming.

The iphone took an industry that was out of control and gave it control and for that I will always be thankful. However, just as I am no fan of any one OS I will have to say Android is the closest to my heart. It does what I want when I want and with ease and is priced fairly. Unlike Apple and AT&T that only seem to want to take advantage of us and our money, they can keep there lack-luster, yester-year product and shove it. I'm with Android and Sprint, HTC is a bonus!

Nobody has said it's a lock that the Evo will do simultaneous voice and data. SP said it "looked good" but it wasn't a confirmed thing.

And to do the simultaneous voice and data, you need to either have wifi active or be ina 4G area...you can't do it over 3G. At least that's my interpretation.

Yes - to further clarify, due to limitations of CDMA, you cannot be on 3G and voice simultaneously. They're working on getting voice and WIMAX simultaneously but their progress has not publicly confirmed yet.

We'll find out at release only. I'm hoping Sprint's not touting this feature because so few people will be on 4G that they don't want to create the impression (and complaints) that it will be the typical experience. That said, I'm also hoping this can be done while on 4G since 1) 4G can handle it or 2) Evo can handle simultaneous 4G and 3G antenna traffic. I thought I read somewhere that the 4G and 3G antennae were separate rather than an integrated/dual function unit which would make it more likely that both voice and data could happen in a 4G area.

Simultaneous voice/data seems small, but it would really have an impact on how the iPhone and ATT market.

the 4G wimax radio is separate from the CDMA/3G EVDO radio. That's what makes it possible. We'll see if it's enabled.

From what has been stated here in the past after the 18th of the month prior to your eligibility date they will allow you to upgrade.

Reasons I am getting EVO:
1. 4.3 inch camera
2. 8 Megapixel camera
3. 1 GB Memory (question, will this make run smoother? faster?)
4. HDMI
5. Android 2.1 or better

Don't care about 4G, I will eventually get it anyway (Orlando, FL)

Hey everyone, earlier this week I made a bold (though not very likely) prediction that Sprint/Disney would let Evo users stream Prince of Persia onto their Evo's once, after purchase, but nobody replied. Last night I thought of a more plausible scenario.

I'm thinking on the 12th, since they'll be showing off the Evo, then an advanced screening Prince of Persia, they'll probably combine the two and show the movie, then say the movie was playing off the Evo storage, or even better, via live HD video stream!!! Could you imagine the publicity??!!! Although they'd need to invite some of the more popular news sites like Engadget. What do you guys thing? Good idea, bad idea? Possible/plausible/improbable/impossible?

Not plausible given that the resolution of digital CINEMA projectors squashes 1080p. The film, if streamed from the phone, onto a theater grade screen, wouldn't look so hot.

They can format the video to play in a letterbox. The film aspect ratio neatly fits into the 16:9 aspect ratio of the HD format with letterboxing.

Huh? I don't think you're following.

The EVO is only capable of 720p output, which at best has a 1366768 resolution. Digital cinema projectors operate at 40962160 resolution. They don't even compare, and would look horribly different on a massive theater screen.

I don't think he was talking about aspect ratio. He was talking resolution. From what I remember most digital movie theater projectors are in the 4k range (way more than 1080p). That is why it would look crappy on a huge screen. Looks good on your 55" but stretch that image to 50' and it would look really crappy IMO.

Edit:looks like Bek stole my thunder - good quick typing there Bek!

If they were to play the movie through the EVO, they wouldn't be using a cinema projector. Most likely it would be your average digital overhead projector. That said if they were to play it through the EVO they would have to down convert it to 720p by either letterboxing it or panning and scanning (something which you don't want to do when you're first screening a film).

And for the record as a video production artist myself, I'm not advocating them playing the movie through the EVO. That wouldn't be smart on Disney's part.

Far as I know, we still don't know where the event is being held, so they may not have an actual cinema projector.

Too slow!!!!

Now to build upon the original idea. If I were in charge of the NY Event and wanting to promote both the film and the Evo, what I'd do instead is set up a bunch of kiosks/display HDTVs in the lobby, all connected to Evo's, and have those streaming different videos (Evo ads, P.O.P. trailers, etc.). And have them being streamed over WiMAX from somewhere, instead of playing off of internal storage.

THAT would showcase two of the phone's top features in a very successful manner!

(Hey lurking Sprint Rep - yeah you... I'll be happy to "lease" you this idea in exchange for a free Evo!)

I like that idea a whole lot better than showing the whole movie on the big screen. The other thing that they could do is not show that the EVO was streaming the videos, then when Hesse talks, he reveals it to a surpised/gasping audience .

Given that one of the rumored reasons behind this event is to formally announce NY WiMAX coverage, I could consider that a very plausible possibility... though also, I would expect 1/2 the audience to already be expecting this, so am a bit more doubtful as to how surprised they'll wind up being. *shrug*

In either case, HEY LURKING SPRINT DUDE - TAKE MY IDEA AND MAKE IT SO! ... AND FED-EX THAT EVO TO ME ALREADY!!! For crying out loud, you gave one to Oprah, and she's just down the street from me!

Did the same a week or two back and I agree... see for all of you that beleive the phone may be to big or what have you... you really need to go check out a HD2 and get a feel. The nice thing is that it runs a winmo version of sence, thus allowing you to not only get a feel for the physical aspect of the phone but the OS feel on such a GODly screen!

My local Sprint store rep told me yesterday that San Diego was going to have 4G network in place by the end of this year.

San Diego is not listed on the initial list of areas, or on the "2nd wave" of cities (that includes LA), so I'm not sure if this is credible....thought I would pass it on.

I don't care if I have to only use 3G during th interim, just gimme my EVO....

Still left out are the major urban centers like NYC, San Francisco, Washington DC, and Boston with no word beyond “this year” as to when they will be lit up.
Actually, did eieio (or someone else) post the other day that Boston or DC (I cannot exactly remember) has quietly gone live?

EDIT: Just double-checked... eieio did state, over in the WiMAX coverage thread, that DC has been lit up.

Comparison of Nexus One and Incredible cameras:

The Incredible Camera Showdown: Droid Incredible VS Nexus One Android and Me

Despite the higher megapixel count on the Incredible (8mp versus 5mp), the Nexus One produces consistently better results.

Like I've been saying, a higher megapixel count doesn't necessarily mean that a camera will be producing better images, especially when these cameras are using such tiny sensors.

In addition to sharpness (it's arguable whether the 8mp sensor on the Incredible is actually capable of capturing more detail than the Nexus One's sensor), another major concern for cameras is dynamic range (the range of darkness to brightness that can be captured and distinguished). In general, sensors that are smaller in size and have higher megapixel counts have worse dynamic range, since the small photosites have trouble collecting enough light (lack of shadow detail) but then fill up too quickly (blown out highlights). This seems to be the case with the Incredible camera (look at the picture taken of the swimming pool).

I'm bringing this up, because I suspect that the Incredible and our EVO share the same camera sensors. However, even if they do not, the sample photos in this article show the limitations of increased megapixel counts on small sensors.

I'll bet with a small Brightness/Contrast adjustment in Photoshop that I could improve the pictures. Even my Cannon digital usually requires some adjustments for best results.

I just know that I am going insane with all this waiting we have been doing -- here is my timeline:

Around October: rumors of the HD2 was coming out unknown who the carrier will be

January -- Hoping and Praying and WAITING for Sprint will announce some cool phone at the CES- NOTHING - so we wait

Mid-January - Rumors of the Supersonic start to hit the air and people get all excited but there is no proof -- Again we wait

February rolls around -- People just KNOW that sprint is going to say something about the Supersonic phone @ the MWC-- again nothing again we wait

March -- Finally after all this time we get to quench our thirst of waiting with the reveal of the EVO - but no price point and no release date .... GUESS WHAT WE GET TO DO .... wait.

April -- Hopefully on the 16th some big news will be dropped about the EVO - I freakin circled that date on my calender -- NOTHING - We continue to wait

Now we are in May and we are waiting for May 12th to come - I swear I will lose my mind if no information is brought to the table!!!

I saw that too and it worries me a bit, the pictures looked quite a bit better from the N1 than the incredible, not only that but the dual flash was weaker than the single flash on the N1. I hope the Evo has a better camera set up, HTC isn't known for it's high quality cameras anyway, I remember when the hero came out everyone hated the camera because photos were always blurry and then they did some kind of update and it improved it a bit. I would think if you are going to go through the trouble of putting an 8mp camera on a phone you'd go all out and not do it the cheap or lazy way.

Apologies if this video had already been posted early on, but it's HTC's CEO talking after Dan Hesse about how HTC/Google/Sprint had been working since May 2008 on delivering the worlds first 4G Android handset. 2 years? This phone better live up to the expectations if it's been conceptualized since WAY back then:

Everything seems to be running together for me lately, but (I think) I read the camera was one of the things being worked on for the EVO 4G. If I recall correctly, one of the things there were working on was a delayed strobe flash. Not sure I've said it just right, but that's the idea.

I expect the EVO camera to be better than the Incredible camera. Also, look at Autosuggestion's Incredible thread. He posted quite a few pictures and I thought they looked pretty darn good considering they came from a phone camera.

Yep, that's true Bill. However, one can't escape the fact that these small sensors on our phones are inherently limited. If the sensor is clipping blacks or is blowing out the highlights because two many pixels have been crammed into too small a sensor size, no amount of photoshop will be able to recover what is already lost. What photoshop will help with is the blueish tint on the Incredible photos. It should be relatively easy to adjust the white balance, and I'm crossing my fingers that this adjustment can even be done on the phone. If I remember correctly from one of the CTIA videos, the EVO has manual white balance adjustments built in.

My point is, the higher the megapixel count doesn't necessarily mean the better the photos. In fact, in many aspects, the opposite is true: dynamic range decreases and low-light noise increase. What you might be gaining is detail from the extra megapixels--but even then, that is tempered by how small the lenses are and also by diffraction limits.

That's just the time Sprint first approached HTC about a 4G phone. Back in '08 they more than likely had no blueprint much less concept of what the phone would look like or anything. Then once they start to think about features there's a big wait to see what the latest and greatest hardware out at the moment is, and finally they'd start to build a prototype after everything is on paper(maybe close to a year after the whole process started).
