well considering the "official htc incredible thread" is the best thread on this site right now, i'd say that's not a bad idea.

If that was directed at me, then no. I've been on various WM, Palm, WebOS, and Android forums for a while. Pretty sure I had a login here around the G1 launch but I forget it so I made this one back in January. I only buy a phone every year or two but smart phones have been an interest of mine ever since I bought my first Treo so even if I don't have a particular phone I tend to follow the developments.

Went from PalmOS to two WM phones to a Pre and now I will probably go to a Supersonic this summer. Maybe next summer I will try WM7

I've been the same way, going from Treo to Mogul to Touch Pro to Pre but I think I may finally give it a try with the Supersonic. I have an iPod Touch and that is borderline acceptable but still not as accurate/easy as my Pre. For me personally, the addition of Wimax and the larger screen make it worth the sacrifice and hopefully a 4.3" screen will be bearable for typing compared to a smaller, lower res iPhone/iTouch screen.

But...4g isn't everywhere, and if I'm paying extra for it, I expect a certain level of coverage. I have 4g here in Philly, but when I travel I'm not guaranteed to have it, yet I'd still be paying for it. That doesn't necessarily seem fair. Right now their broadband cards are the same price whether it's 3g or 4g.
Still, they don't charge more for EVDO over 1x nor do they charge extra for the areas with EVDO Rev. A. The phone simply defaults to the fastest network available.

With Wimax being new they will not want to charge extra for it on a phone. Modems and dongles always come at a premium. They do for 3G too. But if you charge for something only available sometimes, people will complain. Much better for them would be to get more subscribers just by adding it in at no extra cost and having it be an added benefit when it comes to your city.

Their whole marketing push has been the fact that for a single competitive price, you get as much data as you want. Charging more for a service that's only been out for a little over a year would be a bad idea.

neodorian, I can assure you that Covert_Death's threats were not directed toward you.

Some of you may of heard of Newsradio, some may not have, but the was a British guy that hung out in the old Bravo forums. He always talked like he had inside information and he made a lot of promises he couldn't keep. Eventually, other members in the thread started pressuring him and that all led to a lot of fighting that eventually got the thread closed. It was terrible.

I can tell that Covert is excited about the recent developments concerning the Supersonic, but different people react differently than others. I personally don't want to see threats made against other forum members, so I'm going to ask all of you to keep it civil, otherwise it downs the whole mood of the thread. An official announcement of the Supersonic is getting close, so lets work together to build on the excitement and not down it.

Thank you to all that have posted in this thread and are here because you're sincerely interested in the latest news on the Supersonic.

Bill

Also, please keep this in this forum only, I don't want to see stories about this stuff break out in the next few days citing some guy in these forums (not that any major news site would publish anything based on a dude with 9 posts, haha).

8 MP camera and possible front facing camera? Sweet....it's funny the other day I was thinking 5 MP would be a bit underwhelming on a 4G phone...plus the Incredible is supposedly going to have a 8 MP camera so I thought it was weird why HTC's halo device wouldn't have one as well.

I'm counting down the days when we get more info, my current contract with T-Mobile is up in April. I'll admit the whole Windows Phone 7 Series distracted me a little but I'm back to the SS.

I'd also like to just note that this is from a document I saw a month or so ago, so if they change any of the final specs don't kill me!

Don't worry. I'm pretty certain we'll have some official information within the next few days anyway. In the meantime, I really appreciate your input.

In the specs that I posted yesterday at the top of this thread, does anything stand out as blatantly wrong?

Video: MPG4 720p Recording (I can't confirm this, but I would suspect at least 720p is true given another aspect of the phone).
OS: Android 2.1 initially, then updated to Android 3.0 (Nothing was there about 3.0, but 2.1 is correct)

It's missing a few minor things, but other than that solid stuff.

Thanks, Ouhei. I know the 1GHz Snapdragon chip is capable of 720p, but when I visited the Qualcomm website, it looked like the 1.5GHz dual core chip is required for 1080p. It's highly unlikely that we'll see any phone using that chip until the end of the year - at least. At this point, I would bet that it will be well into next year before we see a phone or slate with that chip.

Edit: You don't think it will have HDMI for outputting 720p video, do you?

Maybe that's what's blocked out in this picture of the phone on the right?

I agree on this totally. Besides Sprint has always had the cheaper service plans. However, if this happens, it would mean Sprint sour finally be on the lead with one up-to date device, maybe two with the Nexus.

Or TFT Active Matrix?

I really think it will be OLED, like the iPhone. No matter what it is, I still want this phone.

I don't believe Sprint will charge extra for 4G either. It doesn't make sense to charge someone extra for service they may not even be getting. Sprint's broadband plan prices are the same amount monthly between 3G and 3G/4G.

I do expect the phone to be Sprint's most costly phone in their lineup. That crown currently belongs to the HTC Touch pro 2 at $299.99 so $299.99 is my benchmark and I expect Sprint to hit it or surpass it in all honesty. Don't expect any BOGO offers anytime soon.

With the HD2 coming on tmobile for $199, I don't think they can get away with $300 for practically the same thing. $250 would be my expected max price on the device, but I'd love to see $199.

But did Sprint say something about only charging a certain amount for android devices?

This may be old news but the document with all the HTC devices was a Sprint document an not from a third party distributor.

There are a lot of reports out today about the Supersonic showing up in Sprint's inventory and there's a lot of buzz about the phone getting demoed by Dan Hesse next week.

The rumors floating around all seem to indicate that this phone will be released a lot sooner than what we think, and that's great as far as I'm concerned. The only problem is we don't know the source of those rumors. If it's a forum like this one, then well... we'll have to wait and see. I don't think we should get too excited about it until something official is said next week.

There's also a lot of rumors about the HTC Incredible being released on Verizon in the next couple of weeks, so maybe that and CTIA are what's fueling speculation about the Supersonic being released sooner than expected.

It seems very likely that we should start getting some solid information real soon.

I only guessed front camera because HTC used to put them on a lot of their Euro PPC phones but we never got them in the states as the networks couldn't really handle the traffic. Also I keep reading about how there are going to be a few "4G widgets" to take advantage of new features. Honestly video calling is the only thing I can think of that would take advantage of that. Too bad I don't know anyone who is getting one besides myself :/ I was gonna splurge and buy mine at launch and then buy my girlfriend a Legend in June when our account is actually due for yearly upgrades. Front cam would tempt me to buy her a Supersonic but I'm afraid to after seeing her toss her Pre into her bag all the time with no case and drop it on the ground :X That thing has taken a beating in the 9 months since I bought it while mine has barely a scratch. Maybe I will make her pay for this one if she wants it. Not trying to buy another $600 device that gets tossed around with keys and makeup and stuff in a handbag.

Well, I would suspect that we will get a full, solid, finalized spec sheet. But, I would think that Sprint would get this out ASAP, with alot of people saying they would switch to Sprint for this phone. It would help with the direct competition from Verizon and their Incredible.

I agree with this assessment. My personal opinion is that Sprint needs to get this phone into the hands of as many people as possible, if they're going to get ahead and stay ahead of the competition. Pricing the phone too high will deter its adoption.

Keep in mind too, that the Touch Pro 2 is a WiMo 6.1 phone. Those have always been the most expensive phones that Sprint carries. The Nexus One is $179.00 at T-Mobile, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the Supersonic close to that same price. I don't think $199 would be unreasonable, but $179 would be better.

If Sprint were to offer this phone at a decent price and get their WiMAX built out soon, I think people will be flocking to them.

You know, if you look at the leaked video you can see the small round ridge at the top of the phone where the 3.5mm headphone jack will go. Assuming no major redesigns, look at the wide "bump" along the bottom here. It makes me thing there could be more than a MicroUSB jack down there for charging.

Yeah, that very much looks like an HDMI cable to me (on the black phone above) and if it is, that's a strong indication that this phone has 720p.

hey neodorian that post about news radio was totaly my bad, i should used a quote... it wasn't at you but at ouhei, JOKINGLY though lol, i was just poking fun at how news said he was gonna make a new profile, and this is the first profile since then that i know of to have inside info... BUT unlike news ouhei is actually enjoyable to respond to and chat with on here... it was a mere joke, my bad for letting it come out in the wrong way... if you guys don't know about news don't bother it's a waste of your time lol

and @ ouhei

soooo my front facing camera thought was "clever"? this is good, i think a ffc on the SS would be AWESOME, video chatting possibly with skype on a phone with a screen that size would be purely amazing!! i do hope it has ATLEAST 1gb ROM onboard it though, i just don't feel 512 cuts it anymore, any info on that?

Thanks Covert for setting the record straight.

I updated the first post in this thread yesterday. It has a spec sheet and Ouhei pretty much confirmed everything except for the 720p, but that being said, we're speculating now whether that's a HDMI port shown in the black phone above. If it is (and I think it is), it would be a pretty strong indication that the phone has 720p.

BTW, the spec sheet I mentioned shows 1024 MB of ROM.

I don't see the benefit of HDMI out on a phone, can some one enlighten me?

I thought maybe streaming movies to your TV from online, but there are much better options like a networked media tank, HTPC, or DVR. Then what if you need to take a phone call or answer a text? Get up and go look at your phone?

Then I thought maybe just to quickly look at your 720p videos w/ family. But it'd be much more streamlined to upload to youtube and then share. Plus you would think Google would want to incorporate a streamlined youtube upload since they own youtube of course and youtube does HD video.

Can't think of anything else.

Honestly from what I hear it never really took off even where they had it. I dunno if the devices weren't up to it or people just found it awkward to hold their phones up to speak face to face. Honestly as far as I am concerned it is almost bordering on gimmicky but it would still be fun I think.

yea i kinda agree w/ above, i will probably never use the mini HDMI out on a phone, i think it is a niche thing to say well look i have hdmi! but i just don't see myself personally using it... maybe if it could stream huluuuuuuu though! and then i could put that through my TV instead of having to watch it on my computer, i'd be down for that

I agree. For example take some one who doesn't live within 4G service, but regularly travels to Vegas or the like. They should be able to use 4G there without having to pay extra. It would just be awkward. I think the key to Sprint's 4G adoption would be to NOT charge extra for it.

@ neodorian,

Someone on another thread in this subforum said, that clearwire is looking to hire people in Pittsburgh. So......maybe, just maybe, I'll get to see the light.

on this note, (lol i can totally understand your point of view and i totally agree with billmeds' response, but just want to add, that I do not want a repeat of what happened in another forum where the thread got out of hand with a member posting information that got the rest all riled up for no reason only to bail out at the last minute. It resulted in deleting countless posts. it won't help the members and certainly will clutter up the thread with un-needed posting. Hopefully that won't be the case here.

I've suggested to billsmed to make, edit or merge these threads to make an official supersonic thread, once he decides i will sticky the thread.

As for this comment...

Something tells me having a hdmi or mini-hdmi port on the phone would probably help it hook it up to a tv/monitor like a projector. But maybe thats me wishful thinking.

btw, I too have a Sprint Hero and have no complaints with it, its the best phone I ever had, but the Supersonic will be the phone it will replace once it comes out.

Eventually I will replace the Supersonic with the (full keyboard/world phone, 4G) Voyager, which would be the update to the Supersonic in 2011. **

Welcome to the Supersonic forum, senormatt and thank you for your input. When I was thinking HDMI, I was thinking of something different than YouTube. I'd love to be able to plug the phone into my DVD recorder through the HDMI port to record the movie on disk.

I don't think Google or HTC have any interest in anything having to do with physical media. Everything in the "cloud" is the idea.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Edit:
Not sure why the Supersonic has so many less fans than the Incredible. Is it something with Verizon vs. Sprint users? The biggest Incredible thread has 9,400 replies to the Supersonic's 131.

Need some Supersonic love in here... man can't wait to see how everything plays out next week.

I googled HDMI on phones and found this recent article:

The HDMI Consortium is about to announce a mini HDMI connector for the Apple iPhone which allow the iPhoner to run full HD content from the Apple iPhone to a screen by mini HDMI cable. The next step would be to take HDMI to the Apple iPhone and iPods in the form of a mini HDMI cable which means delivering high quality audio and video content to a screen.

That doesn't mean the Supersonic should have this feature, I'm just saying it might.

i think it's because the incredible has SOOO MANY leaked images and specs and videos, but the SS has gotten there quick this last week, so we'll get the fan base up there

and i guess i kinda see it making sense for a portable media base kinda thing... but then the SD card support and onboard ROM needs to get way up there

I agree twospirits. I've seen something similar happen on Crackberry and things got pretty...tense. I am hoping for an 8 MP camera and front facing camera but I'm not getting my hopes up too much just in case. We'll know for sure next week (I can't believe I'm saying that, it always seemed like the Supersonic was such a distant commodity).

VZW has a bigger customer base and know how to generate hype through their marketing. They're a fine company but Sprint is equally good in my opinion and must more affordable which seals the deal for me. We'll be getting more activity here soon the calm before the storm.

Might be the first time in my whole life I'll ever say this:

Yeah I'll never say that again in any other context

I see your point and yeah it's pretty hard to think of any other reason for the HDMI out, BUT (speculation) since this is a WIMAX capable phone, I would imagine it being able to broadcast a live video chat to a whole room? Don't laugh...just imagining

It's bittersweet for me...Sprint finally announces the SS next week but my spring break is also over hopefully the SS will be enough to cheer me up haha.

Yea, hopefully the thing with Wal-Mart works out, where Wal-Mart stores host the WiMax stuff on top of their stores. We have... 2 stores near where I live, then 2 down town.

Right now, we're waiting for the CTIA Wireless Association conference which is going to be held in Las Vegas next week. Dan Hesse of Sprint is one of the keynote speakers and we're expecting him to talk about the Supersonic at that conference.
For me it will come down to how Sprint will charge for WiMAX service. If WiMAX will be part of "Everything Data Plan", I'd definitely go for SS (and then just wait for WiMAX to be rolled out in NYC). If there is any additional charge for WiMAX, I will stick with N1.

Default Just an observation...

I noticed that stleber - post# 47 (the guy that posted this picture) never came back into the forum after posting it. That got me to wondering, so I looked at his profile. As it turns out, he registered, made this post and that was it.

I've seen a lot of reviews on the Internet about the Supersonic, but never saw this picture before. When I look at it, I don't think it's a fake picture. I think it's the real thing. Do you think stleber came in here just to throw us a bone? We may never know, but it certainly looks real to me.

Edit: Stleber, if this picture is real, I want to thank you for it.

I really don't think Sprint will have higher data charges for the Supersonic. Do you have the N1 now? If you're thinking about getting it instead of the Supersonic, you'll have to buy it through Google's website. I haven't heard any complaints about their customer service lately, but you won't be able to walk into the store to have it serviced like you can with a Sprint phone. Something to think about.

This whole thing about 2G, 3G, 4G. There's never been extra charges when you step from one to the other that I know of.
