Isn't that the point of a pre-order? To get priority over the guy walking in the street who didn't pre-order?

I'm stoked! I've got a pretty solid plan that has me hitting RS and Sprint stores (5 stores within about a 20 mile radius) and each opening anywhere from 6-10 AM. Between 5 stores, I should be golden. Hell... I'm camping out at the 1st RS. Come hell or high water... I'm getting that EVO!

However... One RS said it wouldn't even be worth it to come in Friday. Not sure what SHE meant by that. I guess they only got enough to fill pre-order units. Then I called a mall RS earlier and talked to a guy who said that since I missed the pre-order, I could come get on a reservation list if I come in person. Got there after work and the manager was like hell-to-the-naw. Sucks, but wasn't a complete waste. BB next door had a demo unit. Sales dude also said that accessories were in, but wouldn't be out until Friday. I could see where they were keeping about 40 EVOs out on the floor locked in drawers. I'm not afraid to say I got a chubby while standing there.

didn't know where else to ask:

i have 2 pre-orders; 1 at RS, the other at BB. so far, the plan is to go to RS on friday. it's closer and i like the $20 thing.

my thought now is, can i use the other pre-order to get the evo for my wife? she's due for an upgrade and she has an instinkt now. can i use that pre-order to upgrade a different number than the one i reserved it for?

i'm not sure how much she'd appreciate it; she doesn't care too much for that stuff and hates it when i spend money, but video chat would be cool. right?

i wouldnt have a problem with it, just say "i think im gonna use my wifes line instead". its still leaving the store with you. and you could even try asking if they have extras. even though you pre-ordered one doesnt mean you cant buy an extra one also if they have them.

I worry about this too, especially with this strange "appointment" system. Can't they just scan the box to activate it and let me leave? It's gotta take like 5 minutes, tops.

This very reason is why I'm going to use the pre-order I did at best buy. I did both the Shack and BB to play it safe. However Radio Shack (this one) sounds like they Just Have no idea what's going on. And I have had enough phones to know, it's a pretty fast process, if you know what your doing. Regardless it's going to be really busy where ever you go that day. I just like the fact that the girl from BB set up my appt with no problem, said I just tell the Manager who I am, cause he will be handling the line, show him my pre-order receipt, he'll check the appt list, and that the next available rep will grab me and get me out as soon as they can. Nothing goes that smooth, but hey wishfull thinking!

so is it really going to be that much of a pain in the ass to get it activated at RS? i figured they should just scan the barcode...do what they gotta do to activate it. Not really going to want to sit around for an hour in the store.

FIRST POST ALERT

This is my first smart phone. I have a 7:00 AM apt at RS to pick up my pre ordered EVO. They will give me the option of $US499 with no contract or $US199 with contract. Since I need a contract anyway getting the $US199 seems like the best option.

Going with Sprint probably means I activate at RS on 4 June and then call up Sprint and ask for activation fee waver and EVP or CU discount; and hope for $US10 per month discount since 4g will not be close to me for years.

Seems like RS will not have a good accessories selection on 4 June, so not sure what to do about case, screen protector, and other stuff.

There may be other issues as well that I missed or do not know about.

Any tips, comments, hints, or bashing welcome.

Hey DUbious,

I'm going tomorrow morning to pick up my phone at RS. Do I have to know my Sprint PIN to upgrade? I know my security question but not my PIN. Is this going to be a problem?

If you know your security question and answer you should be fine. At least that's what I was told at my RS when I pre-ordered. And I'm not yet a customer for Sprint until I get the handset in my hands/sign.

I don't know. BB's are always so crowded which is why I decided on one of the smaller RS in my area. I avoided the mall RS. I'm hoping that way the process will be slick.

Though, I haven't been called yet.

First, are you new to America? Just curious...

As for your other points - if you're a Sprint | Premier customer, you pay no activation fee. But you said "going with Sprint" which suggests that you'll be a new customer. That means you are not eligible for having the activation fee waived. What makes you think you're entitled to that? You can ask...and you might get it...but you do not actually qualify for it, so don't get upset if it doesn't happen. As for Credit Union discounts, I'm not sure if RS can handle that or not. You can ask. If they can't, and you are a member of a CU, call Sprint and they'll set up your discount.

Ugh...accessories. RS has really disapointed here. From what I've heard they'll have next to nothing. I plan on checking out the Sprint store after I pick up my EVO at RS to see what they have available.

Maybe they can call Sprint to verify?

Yeah, BB is always crowded here too...and the mobile dept. is always under staffed. I still haven't gotten a call for my RS pre-order either...im not worried, though. The lame thing is I went to a mall store before knowing about the 6am openings...so I'll be there a lil after 10am...and since I have my receipt and gift card I should be good.

Not new to US, but have never had a cell phone before.

I have read several posts about how a call to Sprint could get the activation fee waived. A good friend of mine has been with Sprint for years and said it is a common practice for Sprint to waive the fee for almost everyone that asks for it to be waived.

Many posts here and at other web sites give the impression Sprint has the power to waive or discount many charges. Getting upset is not really my style, I am just looking for the lowest cost.

I will check out the Sprint store for accessories.

^ I only asked if you were new to America because you typed "$US10" and "4 June"...like they do over in Europe.

You're free to ask/demand any discount you can think of...but you really aren't eligible for any. For that reason, be prepared to be denied discounts. But like you've heard, there are lots of people that demand discounts and many of them receive them whether they actually qualify or not, so good luck to you. I've never called in to demand an activation fee waived, but like said - it's worth a try.

Question for RS rep:

1. We are going to add a line on my family plan, which is under my father's name. I'm assuming that my dad has to come in with me to the store as well? I'm not a minor and I have the security password for our family plan.

2. We have a EPRP (EVerything Plus Referral Plan) plan. Will that be ok with RS?

Thanks.

I'm really wondering about the 30 minutes to get it set up. What do they really need to do? I mean, i'm sure any updating it may need we could handle. I'm just gonna want to get home with my EVO so I can start playing with it.

Let's see if it may work like this. You get in the parking lot at 9:27 for a 9:30 apt, takes 6 min to lock your car, walk to RS, walk around the store and find the RS person who is giving you the EVO. Then some one buts in and asks where the bathroom is. There is a phone call for the RS person. Then there are two peeps a head of you at the register. Then you have to mess around with the $US50 gift card thing. Then you have to mess around with the any other discounts. Then you have to wait a couple of minutes to verify the service from Sprint. Then any else that could go wrong does.

Of course things could go more smoothly than this, and probably will. Still it is not like you are just giving them two one hundred dollar bills for a $US200 item. There is lots of computer stuff dealing with discounts, verification and the like.

Some peeps may also have questions about accessories and the $US10 survey discount.

I suspect 30 min is a reasonable average time; some may take more time and some less.

I'm showing up before my appointment at 6am, I doubt they'll turn me away. It can't possibly take that long to activate the phone and send me on my way. If they force me wait, I might take my business to the Sprint store if there's no line.

What RS are you going to? If you decide to hit Sprint, I'll gladly wait for "your" EVO.

No... but seriously... what store?

What i wonder is whether this $20 in accessories coupon could be used on whatever overpriced accessories RS might have at launch time and then those accessories could be returned for RS gift card or credit to be used for something usefull?
This combined with $10 off $40 coupon is a good chance to buy a $40 thingie for $10. I just dont think accessories will cut it.

Awesome. RadioShack just called. I have my "appointment" at 8:30 a.m. He said there would be a few accessories...but not the HDMI. That sucks. Then his saleman mode kicked in and suggested I consider the extended warranty. LOL

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it.

Me too. It is not like this will probably be the biggest morning or day of sales for the computer/network to deal with. We all know there has never been a history of computers going into bog mode when faced with a heavy work load.

Can anyone confirm this because I Was under a different impression?

I spoke with another RS store to get on a "list" and I asked about the $20 credit and she said ANYBODY that purchases an EVO gets that, not just Preorders. I told her that I Was told it was only for preorders but she called another store and swore that her many told her that during training.

Any other RS employee can confirm or deny as I was told the opposite. That would be GREAT and would be nice to let other's know that might've been mistaken as I was.

I decided to call Radio Shack to check the status. The EVO's are in. They will open at 6:00am. Girl here said she needs to be there at 5:30am, and she can let me in earlier, but I cannot purchase until after 6:00am.

Also, since I will be porting my T-Mobile number to Sprint, she said this takes about 24 hours, and my phone will be inoperable unless I assign them a temporary number.

Did anyone know anything about this?

I thought that was automatically.

They say 24 hours to be on the safe side but normally it takes between instantly and about 3 hours. Atleast that's how it was last time's I've ever ported. I know that with AT&T (I used to work for them), it was instant (when I actually did the port for a customer, I was surprised it worked instantly). So it all varies.

Just got a call from my Radio Shack. I have a 7am appointment. I am also porting over from T-Mobile, so I am worried about the time it will take to set up my account and port over my number... but I don't have to be at work until 9, so I have some wiggle room...

those of you that pre-ordered at RS and talking about going to sprint or BB if they take too long or for whatever reason, are you planning on just forgetting that you put up $50 on that gift card for the pre-order? Isn't it non refundable?

I just now got a second courtesy call, this time from the manager of the local RS i am planning on getting the evo here in brooklyn come 6am.

Before she ended the call, this is what she said "I like my coffee light with plenty of sugar". Lucky for me, there is a Dunkin' Donuts across the street!

just talked to my RS here...for the people that just want to get in and out and are already an existing sprint customer, let the rep know that you want to skip the tutorial, skip the email setup and just activate the phone. at that point he said they should be able to just scan the bar code on the box and get u outta there within 10-15min (depending how busy it is)

Although I do not type the money like that, I do often type the date like that especially the full date as in 2010/06/03 it makes it so much easier to sort things.

don't know if it's a store by store thing, but spoke to a RS employee and says if phone is purchased\picked up between 6am-9am, you get 20% off any accessory you buy for it.

I will just say I'm in San Diego County area As I did not pre-order and hope to pick up one of only four phones they said they'll have available for walk-ins.

I ordered from the Lutz/Land O Lakes one, so technically not really in tampa. But i've read that they are only opening early if they had more than 4 pre-orders, so that might be your problem. In between me, my husband and our neighbor, we have well exceeded that requirement!

So, for stores that are NOT opening up at 6 am or earlier, will we still get any sort of deal? I pre-ordered from a store at the mall that will be opening at 10 am.

Do stores in this situation receive any sort of discounts on accessories? Probably not, it kinda sucks because it's not even an option to show up early for the discounts.

They called me today, I have a 6:30am appointment. Best Buy is right next door. Not sure if they open early too. I need to find a decent case since I will mostly be carrying in pocket of cargo pants. I have a IWB holster I wear most days depending on what pistol I carry and adding a phone to my belt I start feeling like I'm wearing Batman's utility belt. May drive out to the Sprint store to look at that body glove case since I get a Premier discount.
