I've looked around quite a bit and can't understand why this phone isn't more popular. Sure it's not necessarily a phone for developers and it's not winning the 3D or HD awards, but I think it's a great phone. The radios work great, WIFI is always good, The screen isn't SUPER Amoled, but it's a brilliant display overall.
I came from Blackberry (the dumbest smartphone ever) to HTC because of the original HTC Hero. I wanted one of those so bad but wasn't going to pay $500.00 for it. I found this phone at a discount through my employer and gobbled it up. Noone seems to hate the phone or to have had any real issues with it, they just don't regard it at all.
The only issues I've had are with apps downloaded from the market. I've tried 6 different battery saving apps and only one has actually made the battery last longer (Juice Defender, but you have to leave it on the basic default settings for it to work right). I have also had issues with clock widgets/apps. They all seem to suck ass. My only other issue is with the media/music widgets/apps (can't seem to find any that will sort the media correctly or display album covers consistently or that just look the part of a good widget).
I like my EVO Design and I don't think I'll pine for anything else for a long time.
It's a really good handheld.

I think part of the problem is it didn't have any fanfare surrounding it's release. I did not even know the phone was out until I went to look for a phone to get on Sprint.

However HTC is discontinuing a lot of phones this year, including the original EVO 4G which is already discontinued/EOL. Hopefully fans of the EVO line will move up to the Design and we will get more devs working on our phone. I really hope that they find a way to get S-Off for our phone so we can flash recovery and ROMs without unlocking the bootloader when some become available.

hows the gaming on the design? does it lag? hows the speaker, is it weak like the evo 3d? is it snappy?

The speaker can be startlingly loud depending on the media's volume but I haven't played much music through it to comment on quality (bass vs treble). Games don't lag unless they're system intensive and something else intensive happens at the same time, such as someone deciding to chain message you. I haven't had much issue with system lag outside of the "I just woke up/booted up and you're touching stuff too fast" issue all electronics hate.

It doesn't have the biggest display, nor the fastest processor, nor 3D, etc. So there's not a lot to hype about the phone. Yet, as I'm looking for a new phone, it's between this and the Epic 4G Touch, with the smaller size of the Design actually being the main reason it's under consideration (other phones seem almost TOO big). I don't play many games, so having a single core processor shouldn't be a big issue for me. Reports of poor battery life are my main concern.

It does surprise me, however, that the forum here for this phone is so small. There seems to be a lot more discussion on it at sprintusers.com, though.

I really love this phone and I hardly ever see them come into my service center so people aren't having problems with them. This will be the next phone I get.

I actually have some interest in this phone.

I have the 3D now and I could care less for the 3D photo.

The reason why I might need this phone is that I can bring it back to my country and use it. SIM card is what I mean.

I saw the ROOT method for this phone.

Are there any cook ROM for this phone?

I would definitely get the EVO design if I didn't have my EVO 3d. I've played around this bad boy, and I think It's an awesome device, performance wise. Even though it is a single core processor - it seems to move much faster than my EVO 4G.

I'm not sure why people complain about it being single core. It still is a better processor to the original evo and now it's not thick and chunky like a brick.

It's basically a sleeker faster replacement for the Evo. It's NOT an evo 3d replacement which is what people are acting like htc is doing. They made this to replace the original evo. I have a 3d and i hate how bit it is with the stupid camera button on the side. I have it rooted and custom rom but as soon as custom roms start popping up on the design i'm jumping ship. Camera button on the 3d?! what year is this, 2004? talk about novelty.

The design is a great phone. I'm a tech/sales manager for a sprint store, and this is my go to phone currently. Its basically a reboot of Incredible 2 on verizon. Very solid phone, never see any in with repair issues. As far as rooting, I'm not sure, you can check the XDA forums, I personally don't own the phone, so I couldn't speak to the rooting process, but if you don't need a 4.3" + screen, this is the phone to get.

I got the EVO Design about a couple of weeks ago to replace an Optimus S after doing a bit of searching on this and the other forum. What I found was that there aren't any significant issues with it.

The Opti has a huge amount of activity in forums. The EVO Design, not much. I think it's because the EVO Design has plenty of memory, doesn't have issues with the SD card, runs fast, has a good UI, good camera and is very stable. These attributes pretty much take away most of the issues for anyone to go looking for solutions in these valuable forums.

Needless to say, I am quite satisfied with the EVO Design and would highly recommend it.

This will get a new life at Boost Mobile. Carrying that EVO brand into the prepaid world will get some buzz. I have an EVO 4G and really had no interest in moving on to this phone. However, I have since moved onto Boost. I am looking at the Design when it comes to Boost.

Agree with all the comments so far: I've been lugging around a chunky, heavy EVO 4G for a couple years.

I got my GF a used HTC Incredible 2 and couldn't wait to find a good deal on a Design.

Just picked one up and can't wait to root it. But there's the rub: So far I haven't found an easy way to root and hardly any ROMs available.

I don't understand why the Design isn't more popular, either. Was checking it out at Best Buy and I liked it. I don't see the need for the huge phones. 4" is a good size to me.

hey, the easiest way to root is to unlock via htc.dev , and flash recovery, and then install the su binary zip through recovery... after that just download superuser and busybox directly from the market for FREE. i'm on the newest ota and have root! but i want a stable custom rom. i bought this phone 2 weeks after it came out and believe me, i've been looking FOREVER! somebody on this site has an ics rom..... i'm waiting a while to see if anyone else has tested it. last i heard there was some sms/mms errors (not really sure though).

This is my 1st smart phone and I must say it's quite impressive. Being a former Windows systems tech/admin I'm amazed at how small the apps are and how well they run.

There are just SO MANY phones to choose from, and as someone else stated, there was not a big splashy marketing push for this phone.
Also, I think a lot of people are looking for the latest, greatest tech design, and hardware, and the design just got lost in the shuffle.

I ended up with both the Evo V and Evo Design.

The Design is going to my fiancee. I actually don't really like it. For a full touchscreen, It's too small for me. It's also seemingly slower than my V. The display even though it's the same on both phones, Appears more dull to me.

It's a good phone, Don't get me wrong. It just seems to have fallen between the cracks a bit...

If you take the phone overseas, you can put in a sim card and use it. Can't use a sim card in the US. At least for the Sprint version. Hopefully, the Boost version still has it.
