HTC phones are not known for their quality speakers. It's entirely possible that your speaker just gave it up. You might make certain that the speaker is clean. If you have your phone in a dusty/dirty environment you might try blowing on it.. by mouth (not canned air) to make certain you don't have a foreign object causing your grief.
A factory reset has been advocated. If it is a software problem that would definitely resolve the problem. Be advised that if you follow this course of action that everything will be reset factory fresh and everything on the phone will be wiped. Backup all of your important items such as photos, texts, music, etc prior to doing a factory reset. Best of luck to you.
