Don't know if this is a dupe but my search did not turn up anything. SOmwhat interesting but I think it is going backwards as far as tech goes. What do y'all think?

looks like HTC is trying to fill that physical keyboard market like Samsung did with the epic 4G.

The phone looks ugly, but I'm really curious about that case with the clip.

They've been through the code names and name confusions - AF's been confident enough on this one to have already given it its own forum - HTC EVO Shift 4G - Android Forums

Personally, I don't care for goodandevo.com, so here's another peek or two -
HTC EVO Shift 4G Sprint Phone Expected Out Jan. 9 | Top Tech Reviews
Leaked Photo of HTC's EVO Shift 4G Shows It's Got a Sliding Keyboard

And - nothing wrong with alternatives. I've been holding off on WifelyMon's Epic, am not thrilled with Samsung right now, am still thrilled with HTC, so I'll be sure to be showing her this one.

She's gotten used to typing on glass, but still uses her Moment's keyboard often - and if the pictures are correct, then FINALLY someone has brought back a qwerty layout, not a chicklet-version of qwerty.

WARNING about that picture - that's clearly sporting the same sort of case I used to have for my Moment - and we know the screen was Photoshopped.

Here's a more level-headed view - conclusion - too soon to tell....

The Epic is supposedly faster than the Evo. So check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn5UKl5z0Os&feature=related

If the shift is anything like the G2, it'll be a beast. Plus slower clock speed = better battery life.

My crystal ball says that whatever final form it takes, it's going to perform better right after users here intensely scrutinize its as-shipped configuration, it'll get mind-blowing performance tweaks from devs posting at XDA, and then we'll collaborate on who's gotten root to break open with the latest instructions.

Not being snarky - I just know if this phone is what it looks like, I'm not going to have my hands on one on launch day and I already wish I would.

But I stand by my assessment in that 1st paragraph.

Default So basically a Dezire Z in EVO clothing?

If in fact that's the case I'll be quite happy. I absolutely love the G2 and if I were on TMo I'd get one in a heartbeat.

But one thing that really REALLY will irk me if true - no trackpad?! I have gotten by without it on my EVO because the screen is so huge but I feel like I'd really need one with a 3.7-incher. Plus, the way the G2's pad lights up is wicked. I'd bet anything the Shift will just have the same uber-dim little LED's that the Hero and EVO have.

That's what it sounds like, a slightly different case (different buttons at the bottom) but the internals should be identical.

I also really like the G2, and am waiting to hear more about the shift's release date.

And I wouldn't worry about the trackpad, I had the inc (also 3.7") and big fingers, and it's not an issue.

Default HTC Evo Shift 4G

I'm sure most of you have seen this, but there's a new Evo coming out (Evo Shift) with a keyboard:

HTC EVO Shift 4G Poses for Photo, Loses the Protective Case | Android Community

Thoughts? Like it or not? Anyone going to get it?

I think it looks okay, but it's not giving me phone envy.

There's a whole section for this

HTC EVO Shift 4G - Android Forums

I don't think I'll be wasting any time with the shift. It looks like a smaller, slightly less powerful Evo with a keyboard. I have no use for such a device.

Well, people did say the same thing about the G2, and that thing has been overclocked way beyond what my evo can handle. Not that I think the shift will be able to do the same thing, necessarily, but I'm just saying...

too bad the phone is butt ugly. that chrome border is way too much. i think i'll wait for the next gen (tegra 2) phones. the EVO will last till then, it's a pretty good phone.

Butt ugly is the understatement of the century here. Seriously, I can't believe they took a (IMO) beautiful thing like the G2 and messed it up this bad. The original EVO is not a bad looker either. But obviously the two mixed in a blender and given a coat of blue paint (WTF?!) don't work.

I could only pray that this is an early prototype but nowadays leaks like this end up being what we get. Sad

I believe what a few people on another site have suggested and that is that the blue around the keyboard in the most recent leak may be a protective film. I am really hoping that is the case. It would be very UN-HTC like for them to make a phone that actually looks that bad. I also hope the border that looks like chrome is just reflective gray/silverish plastic that is just showing up poorly in those pictures. I guess we'll see soon enough. Hopefully Sprint actually announces it with some decent pics or whoever has one learns to use a damn camera before posting the pics.

Getting this phone no matter what.

The Evo is great, but it lacks the most important thing, a real keyboard. I hope this gets Cm6+ quick because I hate Sense with a passion, but will put up with it for the sexy keyboard.

I love the way the phone looks.

You won't be disappointed. Did you get that Radio Shack deal for $99? I've loved mine since the day I got it on the inital release.

I thought I would hate not having a physical qwerty, but now I can't see myself ever going back to having one unless they find a way to make phones just as thin as the candybar phones.

I got the 99 dollar deal at RS. I traded in my 2nd Moment for it. Totally worth the trade. I held onto the moment because of the keyboard (Instinct and Instinct S30 ruined me on touchscreen qwerty), but the Evo has restored my faith in an onscreen qwerty!

I absolutely love this phone. I hope Sprint doesn't EOL it any time soon...

If you plan to get rid of Sense, why not just get an Epic now? Essentially, Sense is the only real difference between the two.

incorrect. not only does the epic not have sense but it has touchwiz which is almost as bad and doesnt' have the dev community that the evo does to remove it. also, the epic feels really cheap, the buttons disappear, the screen is smaller, it's a lot thicker. i could go on and on but most importantly...it's made by samsung. not HTC.

I actually love the Sense UI. When I was offered the chance to get an EVO as a gift, I decided to also keep the Epic as an option, but I'm not sure about the TouchWiz.

Anyways, I'm glad that we're looking at the EVO Shift here. I would love the chance to have an EVO, but I prefer something closer in size to my current Sprint Hero.

The thing that saddens me about the 800MHz processor is that 2011 is the year of duel-core phones. This is going to look like crap not compared to the evo but to the new duel-core phones. 800MHz right now can handle any thing you throw at it right now, but I'm worried about it as gaming and apps that require more speed start to advance that it just won't make the cut.

^^^ save that type of argument ... and you can re-use it anytime in the future. and it has been used plenty in the past.

there is no way to win...
there is no way to fix ..
there is no stopping it.
there is no one to blame.

Gaming aside, there are very few (maybe none?) apps that have advance beyond even last year's smartphone processors. I know plenty of people that rock a Droid(1) that does everything you can throw at it, minus the newest 3D extensive games, of course.

There are so many people buying entry level Android phones like the Optimus or lower that are on a 1 or 2 year contract that app developers are going to consider them when making apps or they will be losing out on a lot of money. That is why I am not too concerned about the processor being only single core. App devs would be foolish not to make apps compatible with lower end phones for a long time. Other than bragging rights I am not sure what a dual core phone will get you over a single core, at least for quite awhile.

That's a misconception, unfortunately. The new 800mhz Snapdragon is slower than last years 1ghz. They're the same CPU. The difference is the die process (45nm vs. 65nm) and the GPU put on the SOC (Adreno 205 vs. 200). That new SOC gets better battery life and better 3D performance, but lessened CPU and 2D performance. Overall, it's a better SOC, but not by much.

And trust me, the 1ghz CPUs from the past year are nowhere near being maxed yet. That's simply not the bottleneck on these devices.

it has a front facing camera!!!
8 meg camera.
... only waiting for the cpu confirmation.

Can I live with the 3.7" screen vs the EVO 4.3".
I got my evo on Dec 16. So, I have time to look and see if I want to trade.

I know you'd rather wait on confirmation, but it's built on the same Desire Z platform as the Vision/G2/Merge/Lexikon, which is the Snapdragon MSM 7x30 (800mhz Snapdragon, Adreno 205).

So when you say its slower then the 1ghz do you mean at stock speeds?
Considering they are getting 1.5-1.7ghz overclocking I think I know which one I would prefer.

I thought that knew what the shift would be. I knew it was be same as G2 /Desire Z...
i have to wonder if it is the same..when there is some difference.

front facing camera is not on the others.
this is a sliding KB.. not the Z hinge.
8meg camera is bigger than the 5 that is on the others.

most likely the cpu and mem will be the same.. but what if it is a step up too!

Yes, at stock speed. A die shrink but same core means same performance clock for cock. If overclocked to 1ghz, you'll get the same general performance as the 1ghz Snapdragon.

But, you also get the benefits of a lower die size, which means better battery life. You also get the Adreno 205 GPU, which is roughly twice as fast as the Adreno 200 from the original Snapdragon.

the latest leaked pics show the actual box with specs.
sorry to say it is a 5mp with no front facing cam.

unfortunately nothing mentions what type of lcd or processor for sure yet.
I did find it odd that it was running a 1.xx radio with froyo.

I'm speculating that it's using the Snapdragon MSM 8x55, which is the 1ghz SOC at 45nm, with an Adreno 205. That's the same SOC used for the MyTouch 4G and the Desire HD.

Two SOCs we haven't seen yet but should be ready imminently are:

QSD 8x50A - 1.3ghz, 45nm, Adreno 205
MSM 8x60 - 1.2ghz (dual core), 45nm, Adreno 220

So far, nothing has been confirmed to use the latter two chips, but both should be available for consumer electronics no later than June, potentially much sooner. But, the safe bet is that the Thunderbolt is a LTE/CDMA version of the Desire HD, and thus, using the MSM 8x55.

Default Shift

Held one in my hands today. Not much I can say as a Sprint Employee, but I'm glad I have my Evo.

The Shift looks like a great phone, but it definitely has a target audience.

800 MGz Processor (Not dual core from what I can see)
1500 mAH Battery
5MP Camera
2Gig Card
Wifi Hotspot (8 devices like the Evo)
3.6" Display
2GB/512 ROM/RAM
Runs 2.2
No Front Facing Camera.

And yes... it's blue... Like a dirty blue. Not terrible, but not black.

looking into the subforums for G2 and Desire Z....

i can see.. that the EVO is still has way more options for MODs, ROMs, Themes, extras,... this is a huge decision maker/breaker for me.

The main difference you should be looking at is;

-large screen no keyboard, vs;
-medium screen with keyboard

These two phones are so different that you should be looking first at THAT difference. If you really want a keyboard, you can always consider the Epic, which is a Galaxy S-based device. It has a medium-large screen and a solid keyboard.

Dark blue is my favorite color, so that part of it (unlike many others), I actually like.
