Post need help with several issues please

I'll start from the beginning. My rooted shift still running 2.2 had the digitizer go out. Love that phone, had a backup about 2 weeks ago saved to sd card. Well had one of the swipe passwords to unlock phone so cant change usb mode from charge only to copy stuff from phone to computer or new phone. Not a big issue i suppose since i have the back up. I just recieved a replacement phone from sprint. Pre loaded with gingerbread. Loved all the updates at first but now all the little issues are getting to me.

Question one: i have to send back my old phone or will be charged 400 bucks, are they gonna know or care that its rooted? Its running stock rom.

Two: now that i think about it i can still get into boot loader, does the phone have usb connectivity when in boot loader?
Three: anyone successfully root 2.3.3 with S-on? Got a feeling im stuck with GB so lets make the best of it, Four: can i recovery just my apps from the backup? Or even just see the names of them so i can go redownload if nothing else, market only remembers apps i payed for. Five: almost everytime after closing any app i get the white htc screen then loading for up to maybe 10 secs. Also programs have no memory where left off at, they have to be restarted, example, recieve a text, send a reply then go back to what program and it has to re open the app, it dont let it stay running in the back ground. Very fustrating, old 2.2 didnt have that problem. Its like the memory manager is too intrusive. Worse is the browser. Some pages super fast, some really slow, mainly all the forums as i am trying fix all these issues lol. A lot of random refreshing? And something that pisses me off, it closes my backgrounds tabs if i dont switch to them constantly. That is about all my complaints i can think off, i will gladly live with GB if i can get these things taken care off. I have been doing a lot of searching but not much helpful yet. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

It would probably be in your best interest to unroot the phone before sending it back. There's a couple of ways you can do this. The easy way is to use the one "zip" ruu, you can get it here One "zip" RUU-Back to stock-2.3 zip removed completely - xda-developers. You can either put your sd into your pc and put it on the root of your sd, or if you go into recovery > mounts and storage > mount USB storage.. that will put you in mass storage mode. That should take care of question 1 and 2.

No there is not root for the Shift running Gingerbread.. yet. But there is a temp root solution, you can find it here. Working EVO Shift Temp Root for 2.3.3 Newst OTA [8/04/2011] - xda-developers
