Default Auto download of MMS? Also Roaming only?

I'm not sure if this is an all-Sprint thing or specific to the Shift. When I recieve pic messages, I have to 'download' them. It's irritating. Half the time they don't download, because I get a crappy signal in my apartment. Even when I have decent bars I am constantly hitting that stupid button only to have it refresh the text and reappear, no image. (Sometimes the button takes a minute to load and I get a SPRINT PCS link.) Is there an app or setting that will automatically download them upon arrival? Why do I have a smart phone if I have to tell everyone to send things to my email?

ALSO since mentioning my crappy signal reminded me...I hate that I don't have a roaming only option. Doubtful but maybe you guys can help. Is there a way to force it somehow? The phone constantly cycles, which is fine most of the time, but when I do get a good roaming signal and am trying to make a call, it switches back to any barely there Sprint signal it detects then loses it again right away. So my dialing drops before it gets connected and I get that annoying "network unavailable" error.

Guessing I'm stuck with these issues because of proprietary BS, but thought it was worth asking.

Thanks guys!

(P.S. I'm not rooted and I'm deathly afraid I'd brick it to death if I tried.)
