Default Diary on the Explorer

I've had my HTC Explorer for just one week (first smart phone) and so far so good. Except for one thing ... after transferring everything from my paper diary onto the diary app (which took ages). I woke up to find its all gone . Not one insertion has been saved, completely clean.

Should I have backed it up in some way? If so, how do I do it

Any thoughts?
