Default Awesome

My awake time was hovering around 100% all the time as well and after reading your post Mrniceguy, it helped tremendously!! thanks buddy!! i just have one query though...i am using handcent as my default messenger but when I receive a text, it indicates me in my status bar but I dont get a notification on the actual icon....theres a bunch of settings for this app and I rummaged through them to try and find like a little "1" that pops on the icon like the original messenger....any ideas or an actual fix for this very slight inconvenience??? thank you for ur assistance!

Don't create a shortcut, instead create a Android widget for handcent sms

i returned the original phone and got a replacement. the replacement sleeps well. i did not use the native text at all. first thing i did was disable it. there are some differences i have noticed between the two phones....the new one has "with google" on the battery cover...the og did not. the new one seems slower and when pushing menu twice it doesnt wake correctly 90% of the time. the scroll does not work as smooth on the new one. the camera works better on the new one. pictures are much clearer. i had two pictures on the memory card and it takes a while to load them. og phone would load waaay faster. i'm beginning to have flash backs from my old instinct. quality control on these phones must be almost non existant

This version seems to be more stable than the one without the google logo

Thanks chocmatic, i believed that worked!, now what i dont like is that when i receive a text, it pops up on the entire screen while im in the middle of something and on the old messenger it just notified you and that was all, i liked it that way...any way to make that pop up text dissappear and just notify u with the icon??? also, is that why i am not getting any notifications on my facebook because it is a shortcut instead of a widget??? cuz i dont receive any notification on that as well...anyone can help me out here, would appreciate it!! thanks!!

It's amazing that an experienced and solid hardware/software manufacturer like HTC would do something like this. Phone is awake during charging sessions? The native Messaging app screws up the phone and keeps it awake even when the screen is on "sleep"?

I sure hope that HTC and Google work on some fixes for these issues soon because getting a third party SMS app and constant phone rebooting is pretty unacceptable. I feel pretty bad for the less technically adept or all the Hero customers who are unaware of this issue. Sadly, not everyone knows to go to a forum and find solutions.

Fix this, HTC!

I can't speak from 100% certainty, because I don't really know the ins-and-outs per se of these devices, but don't most thing "stay awake" when you charge them?

I'm pretty sure my iPod stays on with the battery symbol showing when it's charging. I am sure that WinMo devices stay on as well. The only difference, and I may be wrong, is that there was never a running meter that the user could access to differentiate between "Awake Time" and "Sleep Time".

I was getting 2 hours "Heavy" (texting, data, wifi, high brightness) use before.
I read somewhere that there it is a battery issue caused by the defaul HTC (or android, idk) application.
The work around is for sms to something other than the included app as the default action for text messaging.
This is accomplished installing another handcent sms or various other apps that you may find by going to the market and searching SMS.
after installation go to the contacts list and send a text to a contact.
A screen should pop up and ask which messaging app you would like to use.
If i does not ask you, then you should go to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> It will take a minute while your phone computes the space taken up by each app.
Click Messages> and Tick Clear defaults if it is available.
Viola! substantial battery boost and faster charges.
you can verify that your phone is now using less power by rebooting
then shut of your screen by pressing the end key wait for 1-5 mins mins without touching it...
now quickly
settings> about phone> status all the way at the bottom your phones "Awake Time" (not up time) should be below %40 (mine is between 10-40%) day to day
if this is not the case your phone has other issues and I will try my best to help you out
I have also heard that by letting you device go to sleep immidiately after turning it on it enters a weird device state that causes %100 cpu usage.
though i cannot confirm this i always flip to the next screen and back a few times and check my twitter and what not to make sure... hope this helps
I am so glad for android to be on sprint. Maybe HTC will actually provides updates and make my $279 woth it.
they certainly F-'d up the touch pro bad enough... lol i wonder if i can get my $400 back for it xD
Too bad HTC didn't follow RIM's "power off" feature. My 8330 BlackBerry is set to go to sleep at 11P each night and wake up at 5A. If I stay up later or want to keep the BB live after 11P, I just hold down the RED key for 5 seconds and the BB has a nice rest. And it doesn't affect automatically waking up the phone at 5A.

I thought the newer lithium ion batteries didn't require deep recycling and "topping off" the battery was o.k. No?

Default Phone Sleeps When Charging

Who said the phone dosen't sleep while its charging? Go power your phone off and back on... put on the charger overnight. In the AM take a look at the awake time. Saturday morning mine was at 4%. 18hrs later I was still at 49% battery with 11% awake time. The fix works. I have 15+ apps... have email, contacts and calender synced with activesync "as they arrive". Have AOL set for every 4hrs. Never done a reset and I have "google" on the back of mine. Mine never lags and is as quick as my fingers can go.

Good stuff guys. I'm trying to follow along here so forgive me. I switched to handcent and did the reboot and then checked my status and it says 100%. I'm guessing I want that to be down lower to around 20 something? Also when I get a text messege in Handcent it also shows up in the regular 'message' folder. Is there a way to deactivate the regular folder so they dont show up in 2 places? I really would like to figure out how to get longer battery life.

Update once again , now 9pm , a full 11 hours off of the charger , phone at 48 % of charge !!! that is amazing !!! Turk 182 , I had to do a hard reset of the phone, as soon as the reset was done, the 1st thing I did was go to the market and download the Handcet SMS app. then went to the factory message app , went to settings and unchecked the auto recieve option and delivery reports , then rebooted the phone not once but twice . My phone awake timeis now hovering around 26% the entire day and it produced the battery improvements mentioned above, I am amazed how just how HUGE the difference is from this to the way it was right out of the box , near a solid 12 hours after removing the charger and I still have near 50% of the battery charge remaining !!! Hope this helps !!

I think somethin else is causing the battery drain cuz i disabled the default message app, using Chomp which from what i read is also effective at not causing sleep lock up, turned off ALL location/gps services... weather updates manually, emails once a day. Backlight is on auto. I had a fully charged phone when i left the house this morning and all i did was text maybe 2 dozen messages and i make sure the screen is manually turned off by me each time. And now at 8 45PM my battery indicator is yellow! Somethin else is eating the battery... btw my awake time was only at 20% most of the day... this is surprising that a supposedly "memory friendly" OS is eating thru these batteries. Heck my old HTC Touch HD with a 3.8" screen on WinMo which we all know that OS is a resource hog would go thru MAYBE a 1/4 of it's battery under the same circumstances. Of course GSM is less stressful on batteries than CDMA but still somethin aint right.

Hard Reset is the answer, I know it sucks but its the only way, I would use handcet over Chomp as well

I'm not really sure what's going on with my device.

I was getting about 12 hours before complete drain of the battery. Today, I had WIFI on all day, GPS on all day, Facebook, Twitter, Email, etc....updating on top frequency, and by 4pm, i was at 40 or 50%. I charged it up for 1 hour before I left the office, all the above are still running and 4 hours later, i'm still at 80%.

I'm guessing that after 1 week, the battery could finally be conditioned. My extended 1750mAh battery shipped today and should be arriving Thursday, so it'd be great to get 15-18 hours on 1 charge while running all the processes I currently have going.

Default Confused

Im lost here...i switched to handcent and my awake time runs around 60%, i dont know if thats good or not, im not a tech junky...i mean, im on it constantly using it for the web, facebook and texting and my battery doesnt seem to last much longer than before i changed the messaging apps, but it did improve a little bit...if i set my phone down, it sleeps normally, so that i believe isnt an issue, i have my wifi on at work but my gps is off, so i dont know, unless the battery just needs to cycle through a couple of times, not sure....ive read all these threads and its getting annoying now lol...and i ****in love this phone!! so im not giving up on it!!! thanks for any suggestions in advance!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is another bug. Mine will do this off and on, and when I use Task Panel and kill the "message" program, most of the time the Navigation one goes away also.

I find it weird that without doing this workaround my up time is at 56% (was at 100% yesterday). It might be because I didn't really bother with the phone today. I only sent one text and been on the browser all day. I also receive Twitter and Facebook notification daily. I will post more on it later if it changes.

Well so much for this battery fix, yesterday the battery lasted over 12 hours with no issue, today dead in 6 hours ?? and I think I actually used the phone less today than yesterday ? no idea what is going on and may now just get rid of this phone for something else

Mine lasted 11-12 hours today and I have yet to ever get under 100% reading. I switched to Handcent and unchecked all the native messaging boxes and rebooted and battery pulled. I just can't seem to get it to go down below 100%. And I rarely text. Maybe I'm just overthinking this and 11-12 hours is about average?

for 3 days mine has been sleeping fine. today i installed task killer. after that...no sleepy. I reset the phone and only installed handcent and its sleeping normal...is it task killer contributing to this?

To be honest 6-10 hours is average anything above that is a bonus...
We are talking about a fairly large screen and a 512 Mhz Cpu
This is not an old nokia phone afterall guys

if your phone is lasting 1-4 hours then we need to examine issues

I'm not sure about this battery life issue. My phone has been off the charger since 7:45 this morning - I've texted quite a bit including picture messages, checked the weather, checked and responded to e-mail and was on the phone with Sprint for over 40 minutes and my battery at 7:20 p.m. is still at 60%! I do use Handcent and have disabled the stock messenger app. I came from the Pre - I simply could not be happier with battery life!! My up time is 11% and has been most of the day!

I do use Handcent and have disabled the stock messenger app. I came from the Pre - I simply could not be happier with battery life!! My up time is 11% and has been most of the day!
Thanks for the feedback im glad to hear it is working for alot of people since i get SO MANY posts that its not

charging time is counted as %100 and as I have posted earlier a few times if you let your device fall asleep during boot it will stay locked at 100%
sending a picture mail also CAN cause a %100 till next boot...
I recommend rereading the thread as long as it is. Because to be blunt if its not working for you chances are your not following what has been said

and if you are lets figure out what makes you different

Perhaps you would be better served by the upcoming Samsung Moment
Just don;t expect better support from Samsung

Again I am fairly certain that if you follow the above steps posted from pages 1-current you will find that there is something else doing it.
the easiest and sadly least convienient method is to Restore to factory and see what causes the Break. I am truly sorry but that is the only way this issue is ever gonna be solved is people speculating what causes the break and attempting to replicate it

I did the factory reset yesterday, that is what gave me the good results after repeated attempts to solve the problem , 1 day later again with nothing added or changed since the day before, it just flat out stopped working , as for the Samsung Moment, no thanks, bad taste in my mouth from previous Samsung phones, most notably the Instinct , never buy another Samsung phone again. At a loss

I did the change to the third-party SMS app on Oct 14th when the solution was first found and the phone's battery life has been great ever since. If all I do is text and make a few phone calls throughout the day, I can easily skip charging it all day and most of the next day. If I start using some of the heavier apps like Google Maps, Sprint Nav or GameBoid (GBA Emulator) I see a very quick drop in battery life, especially the emulator. I have sat and played games for an hour or 2 and the battery will go from near full to about 50%. But that's about as expected as the phone only says it has 4-6 hours of talk time and that's a much higher drain that a phone call would be.

IMO, I think there were a large batch of dud phones shipped out. Me and several others seem to have lucked out and gotten a phone without any battery issues outside the confirmed Messages bug. If you really want to stick with Sprint and like the phone, keep taking it back for a refund until you get one that works. Seems to work out eventually for most people.

Finally!

I tried all of the above (almost) and I was still getting 100% awake all the time, never below 100%.

Then I did a factory restore and now it is sleeping correctly! I'm down to 75% and it should go down when I charge it tonight. I'll report back tomorrow on the battery life for the same 11-12 hours as today. Much thanks to you all.

My wife has a Hero with battery issues. Here is my thought - could this be location or signal strength based? A few years ago I practically caught my pants on fire with a Moto Razor in the basement of a hospital. The phone had no service and went through a full charge in less than 45 minutes.

The wife's had multiple days at work where the thing turns itself off from a full charge after ~5 hours and minimal use. I used the phone for the first week "setting it up" and didn't really have an issue, but still swapped in SMS Chomp before turning it over to her. This weekend we were out of town both used it extensively with no issues. Come Monday & Tuesday when she's back at work, it's same old story - dead by 2pm.

One variable I can see in our case is location.

The wife likes her Hero, but is getting pretty frustrated with the battery life.

I did the Chomp Messenger fix, and that did lower my awake time DRASTICALLY, then i uninstalled, my phone lasted about the same time, but 100% awake. But still lasted about 7 hours, to day was about 10 hours and 30% awake.

This phone cannot even last a day with light usage, my BlackBerry Pearl lasted at least 12 hours under heavy constant usage, this battery is not acceptable for me. It is getting returned tomorrow. As with other HTC phones I am sure it will be an awesome phone when PPCgeeks makes thier own ROM, but until then, i need something more reliable.

Yeah battery life is affected by signal strength especially if it ever actively searches for signal and finds none that a batt killer. Try a PRL update and see if it doesn't help.

Wow! What a difference this makes. I did a hard reset and added Handcent sms. I had the phone off the charger since 7a.m. and it is now almost 10 a.m. and battery is at 81%. This is with heavy usage with Twitter running, browsing the net, and texting. good stuff.

I'm cured!!!!! I had to do the restore the factory settings for it all to come together. A little bit of a pain but I think worth it because I like the phone. Before I was never under 100% awake time. This morning I am at 21%. If the batter makes it past 6 pm it will be a huge success. Much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!
