Thumbs up Auto retrieve messages

What does this setting mean on the htc hero just wondering I unchecked then checked it again and the same thing happened.

I think its for MMS, if you set it to auto retrieve then the picture will automatically pop up in the message thread, but if you don't, then it will give you the option to download when you receive a picture
