At least on my HTC Hero, 70 apps is the limit. No, I did not run out of internal or SD memory-far from it. But I have been going off trial and error, installing and uninstalling apps. If I go over 70 apps, once I shut off/turn on my phone, it will be completely corrupt, won't give me service, etc. The first time this occurred, I had no idea what was wrong and hard rebooted my phone. Now, if I stay at 70 apps or below, I'm fine. HTC should really tell you this and it is ridiculous considering I have plenty of memory left.
That's helpful, thanks. I don't think you realize how few 70 really is. My friend has over 150 apps on his iPhone. Count your's, I bet you have quite a few and you will discover there are many other useful ones. I won't necessarily keep all those, but it would be nice to be able to download quite a few and try them before worrying about quickly deleting them. If the phone has the memory, no reason for not being able to have the apps.

I agree, it doesn't make sense. But I've tested this with the number over and again and the problems always start when I hit 70 apps. It lets me install lots more, I've been up to close to 100, but once I reboot my phone it has issues until I get back down to 70.

Confirmed. But, thank you thank you thank you for finally pin pointing the problem. I've had this issue forever, and always thought it was a random thing. I'll point HTC to this thread. At least now I know the boundary of the problem. And no, 70 apps is not a lot.
Only time I've ever had this problem is when I installed a bunch of apps from the market at once. Rebooted and got all kinds of force closes and no service. Uninstalled the apps, rebooted and it was fine. And this was way before I got to 70. At one point I counted and had 74 and my phone was working fine.

I have tried this too, downloading one at a time and it still does it. Try 76 or more by downloading one at a time, rebooting, etc, and see if it does it. I need to know if my phone is defective.
Yeah, I think he should count and do some reboots. I didn't think I had seventy market apps, but sure enough, it was right around there. Trust me, you don't have a physically defective phone. This is my third Hero, same issue.
Thanks for posting that. Did you reboot? I should have been more specific though. The 70 app deal is downloaded ones, not ones native on the phone. Are those 77 ones all downloaded? That is how it works on my phone. No clue how many I have including the native ones, probably lots more.

The first time, I did a hard reset (after two weeks of use). The second time, when I was about to smash this damn phone against the wall, I found this thread and deleted a couple apps I was not using until I had less than 70. I rebooted the phone and BINGO! it is working again. I think I had around 75 apps when it started to give me problems.
I rarely reboot my phone, but when I did it, it was gone. It would force close almost everything. After I uninstall a couple of my apps it is back in business.
I don't know if the problem is Android or Sense, but this limitation is annoying. I don't think that 70 apps is a lot. Also, the 150mb of internal memory is a joke. If I have 16gb of memory in my SD why can't I save my apps and emails to it?? I know, there is a lot of technical explanations behind it...but that is lame anyway.
I was so happy with Android but now that I have used it for a while I am finding lots of limitations. That is sad... hope Android 2.0 is better....

Sounds like you are a lucky one. I don't seem to be the only one with this issue. Very strange...
Besides, not totally convinced until you have over 80 apps. The problem seems to happy to everyone somewhere between 70 and 80 apps. I don't think 70 is a magic number....

try to reboot your phone to see if it gives you any problem. I had over 70 apps in my phone and it was working. The problem happened when I rebooted the phone.
Perhaps nothing will happen to your phone...maybe there are other factors involved, like the size of the apps, type of apps...I don't know... only thing I know is that I know what to do when it happens again to me...

I'm also having issues with too many apps. I'm currently at the limit. If I add one more, and restart, I get no connection and other apps start to crash. Remove one (any one, not just the one I just added) and things are OK again. I have plenty of room left on the internal memory and the SD card.

No, no, no coño NO! I've confirmed from personal experience too that there is a 70 app limit. My first android phone is a Sprint Hero. The point below is consumers remember mostly the negatives, even after upgrades - rumors still abound.
Forgetting Blackberry for not being media friendly(OS 4.5 and above limits) or not being hip. Iphone was cool but closed source, fragile screen, ect...
When Android arrived and being short leashed on a Sprint contract, what else could I do but wait. The Pre is nice but toyish looking. Closed sourced apps and memory leaks, all the negatives, the Android was raising the bar.
On my first day on the Hero I downloaded tons of apps, xfering BB contacts, and coincidentally the new Sprint update was available. I downloaded, applied and rebooted.
Wham, forced closed this, app failed that. Found on the HTC troubleshooter page no mention of a limit, but the factory reset helped. Gmail automatically restored my backups. No paid apps restored. The Sprint update was still there. Crashed again after downloading the apps from the Market.
A Google search brought me here and confirmed my worst fears, 70 app limit, no matter the individual size, if it's "Marketed" it's counted towards the limit.
It's only noticeable if I reach 71. Reboot and no service, force close... Yet another phone that I have to root, hack to see a .3gp, sift thru forums and work ahead of sluggish updates with hybrid OSes. Other cell companies and Sprint's strategy is still there: 5 gb caps, VZW charges extra for GPS, roaming too much and get a contract disconnect warning letter. Call customer serv. Too much and get a similar letter to find another cell company.
I least I still have my pigeon to text with when Dec, 2012 and satellites crash after the earth tilts off It's axis. Pheeew.

I consider myself a power user and I only have 40-50 apps max on my phone. I had an iPhone before and while you can have 1,000,000 on your phone at once it's a complete waste since I hardly used more than 20 except the first time I launched them. The limit, if it exists sucks, but people need to chill out.
Are you really using all 70+ apps at once? Especially the ones that are free, it's very easy to uninstall them and install them when you need them. Just my 2 cents.

I'm glad that there is continued confirmation of the app limit. I sent a request for support to HTC, but got a useless automated reply about the issue.
Who do we complain to, and when will HTC/Sprint start to acknowledge that this issue exists? (I guess they're concerned about market loss to Verizon Droid).

I totally agree. I didn't realize how 70 apps really isn't that much...especially when you consider that all of my Camera Zoom FX add-ons each count as an app. That camera app and all the add-ons are eating up around 25% of my app limit, I think. Also, each Locale add-on counts as an app. Got Better Keyboard? Each skin counts as its own app. (I just uninstalled Better Keyboard and Locale for now. I can't afford to run them.)
Anyway, I'm glad that HTC is acknowledging the issue and escalating. I don't think this was an issue with the GSM version of the Hero. Wonder what's causing it? I may try to run adb logcat when I get home tonight just to satisfy my curiosity.
Hello all, my phone was a little sluggish so I rebooted to give it a fresh face. only to have it be all F***ed up when it starts up! Since this has happened to me twice now I decided to google my problems (hero has no signal and everything force closes after reboot) and eventually found my way here. I was about to do a hard reset since I cannot even goto my settings page to do a factory reset. whew!
I have uninstalled alot of my apps (I had more then 100 including preinstalled ones) and then restarted my phone. AND ITS WORKS, THANK YOU!

I'd like to say that having more then 70 apps was normal use for me. I had 7 news apps, lots of picture related apps, like 25 games and fun/random apps, and the rest were apps like compass, skymap, layer, etc; normal apps that I didn't use often but needed. Its frustrating that I have to pick and choose which apps I want cause I dont want to be stuck having to download an app when I need it because of a stupid glitch.

Harsh yes, but very true. I shouldn't have to reinstall apps.
I am still pissed at all the bugs I've had to deal with on my hero. I won't rehash them here but seems to me this phone was pushed out too fast. I still love it though.
besides the problem of force close and all the screw ups mentioned in this forum, my phone is also constantly changing apps icons and names after rebooting the phone...anybody with this issue as well?

Not so sure they'd be investing time to fix this on Android 1.5 when they're currently working on 2.1. We'll see if someone at HTC has the sense to test 2.1 for the bug before it's released.
