Oh well, back to 100% wake for me. I did a hard reset after installing the update, and everything was normal (slept and everything). Checked this morning and it was at 66% (which was high, consideirng I hadn't used it overnight). Rebooted it, and now its at 100%. Using spare parts, its "android system" keeping it at 100% (which was one of the things keeping it @ 100% prior to the upgrade).

After running RUU to be able to install update...do we have to re-root it? I'm trying booting into recovery mode and it's back to the normal recovery mode

I have a feeling people are not unplugging the phone and observing 100% uptime, not realizing it doesn't sleep the same way when it's plugged in and 100% is expected.
Mine doesn't work like that. I plugged my phone in at night with 28% uptime and took it off the charger the next morning with 11% uptime. Mine isn't staying awake on the charger.
...and replaced it with one that seems twice as fast. I can't believe how much faster the browser loads... And the icon problem is definitely fixed, so I can run Google Skymap again!
Everything else is much faster and snappier. Thanks to HTC for getting to this so soon.
BTW, for those who haven't upgraded yet, when you do upgrade, the phone will reboot and sit there for about 5 minutes with only "HTC" showing on the screen and get really really hot - but don't Panic! For a few minutes there, I was wondering if I had bricked my phone. But all is well.
I also got back 8MB of RAM
On the downside, when you first boot the phone, it takes a very long time for the widgets to update; they do eventually, but it takes longer than before. Also, battery life looks to be shorter than before, though I will wait a few days to be sure.

Here is the information I recieved about the new SW update.
Case Title: HTC Hero Software Enhancement to 1.56.651.2 Solution Title: Complete the steps below to update HTC HeroTM
Details: A software update is available for the HTC Hero on 11/18/09.
Actions:
Current devices should be on: 1.29.651.1
The customer's device will recognize that it needs the latest SW and will ask the customer to allow the installation and download. The customer can also initiate the update from the Settings, About Phone, System updates, Firmware update.
Feature Updates and Enhancements
HTC Hero Software Enhancement SW 1.56.651.2 provides feature updates and enhancements to address the following:
•Improvement to camera picture quality
•DST (Daylight Savings Time) issue addressed
•Unable to receive SMS due to full memory
•Memory leak when BT is in connecting state
•3.5mm mono when not using headset with mic
•Dialer application causing excess battery draw Important note: Dedicated Mute/Speaker buttons have been added to the Talk screen
Verification of updates:
To verify the customer has the updated build after the update:
Press Menu, Tap Settings
Flick Up, Tap About Phone
Scroll up and check Software version: After update 1.56.651.2
Howdy All -- well, a few things popped out right away -- have not had any time to play with all the feature enhancements....
1. Camera how works much better -- close focus (like macro) and light sensitivity are both much better.
2. Shut down time is about one third what it was originally. That is for a FULL phone shut down, not standby.
3. Have not tried any SMS messaging. I guess some have --- how did that go ? Any heavy texters out there that can comment???
Will post any discoveries that have not been documented already.
Please post any list that Sprint/HTC may publish about what they actually patched in this MR.
The update is great and all a lot of great fixes, but for whatever reason, my awake time is creeping back up today (it was 85%) and I updated last night around 6:00.
ok so I rooted my phone, deleted some sprint apps like nfl mobile stock app and nascar. However I did not create a backup. So i downloaded and tried installing the update. It got stuck on hero screen so i had to pull out the battery to resart the phone. So obviously the update did not happen and I no longer see it in firmware updates. I do not see any of the changes that some of you are seeing. Also my phone is now 100% all the time even with handcent.
Just wondering what my options are. Is there a way to do the update without a factory reset? Also if someone has easy directions to do this that would be great.

Well, logically speaking, you have to have something to update. If the original ROM is removed, then I think you will have to get the Hero back to factory stock first -- then update. Then I believe you can apply your "ROOT" patch. I have not been through this process and it will probably be some time since I will be waiting for a "clean" root image. It will be some time I would guess. Also we know more updates are coming (e.g. Android 2.0) so until that happens I am gonna be patient and live with the MR as it is. Anyway, I digress. Check with some others who have been through the process you need to go through to get your Hero back to ground zero ---
The interesting thing is I never had awake time issues before and I don't have them now. But, pre and post update, I still have poor battery life. I use Handscent and Task Panel.
Some icons still had jumbled names, but just deleted them and replaced them and all is good. Only thing I have noticed is the Yahoo Mail via WiFi Glitch... WiFi still knocks out the POP Mail retrieval, small issue cause you can just turn off WiFi and get it then. I haven't had this with anything buy Yahoo, everything else works well so far.
Battery was fine before and even better now. Keeping fingers crossed all will stay that way too I will put it trough the ringer (no pun) today to see for sure.

Did you happen to install any additional programs? Mine is also back to 100% sitting overnight. I am going to do another hard reset and install things one at a time to see if its an app or android.
Thats terrible minds worked fine. Will anybody be using the stock sms app again or sticking with Chomp or Handcent?
Handcent was opening sooo slowly, I removed and went back to stock and all is great. Opens much more quickly. Less settings options, but more efficient.

I was using Meebo for an IM client. Loved the app, but when I uninstalled, the awake time took a serious nose dive...down to 16%!
So far, I am thrilled with the update. Not too thrilled about the vibrating dialer non-option though. Oh well, so is life

FIX AFTER UPDATE: (Sorry if this was mentioned here already)
Before the update when I hit "snooze" on the lock screen, using the stock Alarm you get to by clicking on the HTC clock widget, The phone would wait the perscribed snooze time then show the Alarm graphic again yet would not play a sound. Basicly the snooze button would turn off the alarm.
After the Update the Alarm Sound now goes off again after I hit snooze. So the Update fixed my Alarm Snooze button.

Well I can only speak for myself, but I am taking that into consideration when seeing 100% awake time. I can turn my phone off, fully charge it, unplug it, turn it back on and let it sit for 2 hours, and it will still say 100% awake time. I may need to do a factory reset, but before I do that I have a question. Has anyone gotten a noticeable improvement in battery life since the update? I'm making it through the workday on a charge, so if the improvement isn't noticeable, I won't bother resetting my phone.

People reporting 100% uptime after the update, are you at least giving it a few hours and letting it go to standby? You know rebooting resets the uptime?
Yes I am gving it a few hours. And yes, I know rebooting resets the uptime.
Is anyone else having trouble getting the update to work? I have been all day today and cannot get the phone to upgrade the software. I have tried several times to turn the device off and back on, even taking out the battery. Still nothing…
UMMMM.....my battery seems to be getting sucked down with the quickness after the update. I'm not to happy about this. I'm chalking it up as the update took alot of juice to run. If it still runs down like this tomorrow...ima hafta give sprint a call. I was able to make it almost two days before on one charge before the update....so this is not acceptable to me.
I was hoping this would fix the -press menu button twice to release the lock screen- bug.
Does anyone know a way to keep this from happening aside from enabling the security screen? The security routine is just a pain in the but to use day in and day out. Truely one of the most anoying things the HERO does in my opinion.

I had the same problem. Found out that my firmware version was older than the one the update requires. Check to see if your firmware matches this post http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/19317-update-available-sprint-3.html#post123614. If it does, then nothing I can really tell you. If it doesn't, then you have to update with a RUU to that version. Follow this link Link to Stock HTC Hero ROM - xda-developers. Look for it in the first post. I had to get HTC Sync to actually see my device before I could run the update. Windows XP worked just fine with the supplied HTCSync.exe software on your phone's SDCard.
Right now, I'm updated to the most recent version. Everything is running smoothly!

I see my software version is 1.22.651.1
Are you saying that I have to be at 1.29.651.1 in order to get the update to work?
Yup, just use the link to download the RUU update (100mb, slow download too) and then run it. I only had a problem when I was using my Windows 7 system and the drivers were not working right. So, I had a system with Windows XP (Vista I think works as well) to install HTC Sync software first (located on phone's SD Card) and then run the RUU program to update the phone. I know it sounds odd, but it worked for me.
My Hero is still working awesome after the New Update!! No hick-ups yet.. (Knock on wood!)
And my battery life is really good now.. Before I would unplug my phone at 8:00am and by Noon it would already be at 1/2 life. With Minimal Phone calling and usage.
But today its 3:49pm Central Time and my battery is at 8 Green rectangles out of 10 Or 3/4 Full or 1/4 Empty, Freaking AWESOME!!!!
Up Time: 6:30:40
Awake Time: 1:25:19 (22%)
Is this good or bad?? Give it to me straight Captain!! LOL!!
P.S. If some one from HTC Or Sprint read this:
Please make my Flipping Flip Clock Flip!!! Or at least give us a SWITCH to flip ON or OFF the animation on it!! On the next UPDATE!! Now that it's running allot smoother there's no excuse!!

This is not a "bug"...this is by design. It's even listed in the manual. Personally, I don't mind it nor do I have an issue with it ever unlocking itself, but that's just me.
Again though, this is not a "bug". If it is causing you issues, you would be justified to call it "poor design", but a "bug", it is not.

Forgive me if I am wrong but I thought the purpose of a lockscreen was to make it very difficult to access the phone by accident. So it is easy for me to call this a bug by mistake. It is a very poor design choice IMO. My phone lives in my pocket and has unlocked itself a number of time. (very, very annoying)
I just wish there was a way to make the only way to unlock your phone be with the screen slide operation. Since few things will interact with a capacitive touch screen besides your finger, it makes almost impossible to "butt" dial someone. Simply pressing a button twice is way way to simple.

Couldn't agree with you more, and like I said, personally, I have never had it be an issue...yet.
My point was, that this isn't a "bug" but was done by design, so HTC most likely wouldn't put it on a list of things to "fix" since, technically, it isn't broken.
Things such as the memory leak from BT, or the Dialer lock-up were identified as "bugs" that required attention. Unless they get enough people screaming bloody hell that this is a serious design flaw, it most likely won't be changed because they don't see it as an area that needs repair.
I wasn't discounting your annoyance or problems with it, so I hope it didn't come off that way, I was just trying to point out that something like that wouldn't be fixed in a patch, because as far as they know, nothing is broken.

HTC have said that the reason they removed the flipping of the clock is because it drains the battery.

I'm not having sleep issues. I'm using the stock message app and handcent. I'm sticking with handcent due to the fact it compresses pictures so you are able to send it via text.

Howdy! I have not used the MSM features of the Hero yet because of the issues. In your statement here, are you saying that the stock message app does NOT compress picture images, versus that Handcnet app, which does??
I ask because I am wondering if there is any reason to even bother with the stock message app if you have Handcent loaded??? What say?? Again, l am a newbie to text messaging with pictures. Thanks for any comments and help.

Thats correct the stock message app does not compress pictures to send a mms text. If you was to try to send a picture via text using the stock app it will say the file is too big.
Handcent on the other hand will ask you if you want to compress the file before sending because it is too big. It will compress and amazingly can send a mms text.
I set handcent back as my default sms/mms message app due to the fact that it has pop-ups when a message is received and that it compresses large files to send via text. A+++
Wondering if anyone else is having the same problem I am: I did the update last night, and it was sleeping normally throughout the night, until this morning, when I noticed the awake % was far higher than it should be, and the battery was rather drained. So, I turned it off and charged it. After fully charged and turning on, I am now back to the same problem--100% awake time. I have tried re-booting several times, to no avail. The only thing I'm running extra is Handcent. Is it possible the email client is causing the problem? I did notice I had a few emails while I slept. This is so frustrating!!!

My phone lives in my front pocket and I've never had it turn on when I didn't want it too. I really like the double click menu button to wake as I find it much easier and faster to get to the phone rather than doing the screen slide down. To each his own I guess.
I updated my Hero this morning with no issues at all. I love the update. I went to update my wife's phone and it wouldn't work. I was getting the issue where it would just say that it was initializing the service and would never do anything else. I tried rebooting several times with no luck. I was about to do a hard reset and thought I'd try one last thing. I launched TaskPanel and clicked the "Kill All Background Tasks" link. Once the vital processes started up again and it connected back to the network I tried the update. The update launched right away. Yea!!!

i originally had software version: 1.22.651.1 and was not getting the option to download the new firmware.
i followed tzbf2006's "fix" and first installed software version: 1.29.651.1 from the guys over at xda using the rom update utility (ruu).
after that, i was able to get the latest software version 1.56.651.2 over the air. update took about 10 minutes to complete.
...
after letting the phone site for about 40 minutes, it's been awake for 28 mins(~72%). i did receive a text message and an email during that period so i have a feeling that has something to do with my awake time. i'll keep monitoring.
