Default Upgrade Time!

So I have an HTC hero and its getting really outdated, So i was thinking its time for an upgrade but my only problem is i'm not sure what phone to get....
I want a phone that has a little bit of everything for example... Being able to text quickly, Gaming once and a while, Listen to music, Taking video, And overall a phone that is quick at hopping from one thing to the next.
So are their any suggestions on what phone to get?

Well ponder this, I was golfing yesterday and I was playing with my buddies HTC EVO because he has no clue how to use it, does not even have a PC, lol anyways playing around with the phone, I found that my rooted Hero was much faster than the EVO, so try a new Rom, you may want to give that a try first.

Wait for the evo3D or the nexus S. If you NEED to upgrade right now, both the EVO and the EVO Shift are a great upgrade from the hero. I went with the Shift because I didn't like the size of the OG EVO, and the battery life is way better on the Shift.

I don't disagree with DonB, but stock there is no comparison between the Hero and either of the EVOs. Rooted, the EVOs simply blow the hero out of the water. Personally, though, I would try and wait for one of the newer models, because you will be stuck with it for 2 years, so you might as well have the most up to date phone you can get.

+1 and yes I agree with the stock Evo being much better than the Hero, but I simply would wait until the 3D Evo comes out simply because of the processor, in the meantime I would try a new ROM

Since you are rooted, I would try flashing a new Rom, for kicks and grins, the new GB from AOSP, is pretty amazing and will hold you over until your next upgrade

Truth. I love the Gingerbread ROM from AOSP. It's almost like I have a new phone. Very fast and a great interface. This should hold me until October.

Not possible but the Hero is much faster rooted and running GB.

Further more, your argument doesn't hold water, "the guy doesn't know how to use it". Just clearing cache, wiping phone logs, clearing texts.......... I'm sure would speed any android phone up

I agree about him not knowing how to use it, as he didn't even know how to text, has not even sent an email yet, has no clue, LOL but kidding aside, the phone was brand new, he had just got it hours before. and when I was downloading him some apps, my market was much faster than is when I did the test. No biggie it is his phone, LOL

Hey so i flashed the ROM and i gotta say thank you for the tip! This ROM is extremely fast compared to my Fresh hero 2.40 ROM, But my only problem is I don't have any contacts /: I tried restoring them with HTC sync but the option for that in the notification bar does not show up so any help would be very very much appreciated.

Your contacts should be in Gmail, if you did not store your contacts with Gmail, then do another Nandroid backup, then restore your fresh back up, then create a back up of your contacts, then save on your SD card as a CSV file, then restore your GB back up, then restore your contacts, I would after that store all your contacts in Gmail, this way you will always have them for safe keeping.

Not to mention your rooted Sprint HTC Hero will get better battery life than a Sprint HTC EVO 4G. That big screen really does chew the battery up fast.

I would recommend the original poster wait for the Sprint HTC EVO 3D if he wants something REALLY next generation. That will be available in the Summer.

If you want to export your contacts to your microSD card then you can just go into your Contacts or People app and press the Menu button. There is an option to export you contacts in there.

I never backed up my contact storage using Titanium Backup. Haha.

Same here, I would simply go into People and create your back up from there

Unfortunately I got tired of waiting for the next great phone, it's never ending with technology. Oh well

The EVO is a fabulous phone. I would have been happy with it for 2 years if need be. The only reason I don't have it anymore is the poor signal strength I had with Sprint at our new house. Had to move to Verizon...paying ALOT more $. I wish I still had the EVO. I really miss it! Sigh. That was the best phone I have ever had. When it was released, I was one who stated, "too big, why pay the extra $10/mo" (now a moot point)

That is very true. One buys a new handset and it is already obsolete shortly thereafter.

Next year we will see quad-core handsets. That will render the dual-core Sprint HTC EVO 3D obsolete as well. Owning the leading edge of technology is an expensive proposition. Haha.

DonB...Don't want to take this too far OT, but yeah, we had an Airave...helped alot for a while, until I/we started having some very weird issues...Two out of three times, callers to our phones would not hear it ring in their ear when they called us (while we were home using the Airave), but our phones would ring...we would answer, and they wouldn't hear us...but we could hear them. Makes it very hard to carry on a conversation. I spent literally HOURS on the phone with Sprint over a 10 day period, with no resolution. The issue was so bad, that they agreed to waive our early termination fees on all 4 of our accounts. We had been with Sprint for 12 years. Oh well.

Back on topic, I believe the best plan is to get the best handset you can afford, and keep it about a year. Then sell it, before it gets too devalued, and then upgrade with the money.

I'm ready to upgrade my Hero too. My biggest problem with it is that I've maxed out my memory to the point that I can't really do anything without first deleting something else. I definitely have no need for a phone with a keyboard and I hate the size/weight of the Evo so I've been waiting patiently for something better. I really think the Nexus S 4G might be what I've been waiting for. Hopefully its available soon!

If your not rooted, why not give that a shot until the latest phone comes out.

I'm actually not rooted but rooting alone wouldn't fix my issues anyway, maybe if I rooted and did apps2SD plus got a bigger SD card, but the official release date for the Nexus S was announced today, May 8, so its not really that long to wait

I might be getting my wife a used Sprint HTC Hero to tied her over until we can upgrade in December. She is getting tired of her Sprint Palm Pre and is jealous of the Android ecosystem. She said she would even let me root her handset so that she could take full advantage of it. So, I am totally on board for that.

I will probably be looking around for a used Sprint HTC Hero eBay and Craigslist. I just want to make sure that it is in good shape and has a valid ESN.

I don't really think I'm interested in the Evo 3D, just too big and heavy for me

I was able to upgrade early...went with the Samsung Epic 4G because I wanted the physical keyboard. I am really happy with it...it's weird not having to worry about have a phone that's too slow and can't do Flash 10.2 anymore. My only gripe is the phone is a little thick, but that's expected because of the keyboard.

Farewell to all of you and thanks for your tips...perhaps I'll see some of you over in the Epic forums!

Sprint let me ditch my Hero, and upgrade to the shift 45 days before I was eligible for an upgrade. I'm very grateful for that. Had things not worked in my favor I was prepared to drop Sprint/ Nextel all together after 13 yrs & go too T- mobile.

May have not made a difference, there are talks between TMobile and Sprint on a merger, don't know how serious it is, but they were talking last I heard

Didn't At&t just but T-Mobile? Why would T-Mobile go and buy Sprint? Not sure about this one DonB

On a side note, since I did upgrade to the Evo in February. For all of you hero owners planning on moving up to the Evo 3D, all I can say is wow. Sense 3.0 and gingerbread is quite nice. That's if you're a sense fan Virus over in the Evo forums on xda has ported the leaked Evo 3D rom to the original Evo. Still early but everything is working so far just need to squash a few things.

I didn't say T Mobile was buying Sprint, I simply said they were talking about a merger, I saw that on MSNBC a month ago when they were talking about cellular companies, a lot of times it is simple speculation

Yeah, the talks fell through. That is why AT&T Wireless is buying T-Mobile.

The technologies mesh better anyway, what with both being GSM and all. Verizon Wireless also remarked that they are not interested in pursuing a merger with Sprint.

Wish the Nexus had a SD card, I am also going to wait for the EVO 3D to make a decision. I just watch the Sprint Video on the Nexus S

Yeah, it is pending SEC approval. We will see if it goes through.

I am bypassing the Sprint Nexus S 4G for the Sprint HTC EVO 3D. I do not care for the lack of no microSD card and no LED notifications. Yes, I know you can make the buttons at the bottom become your "LED notifications" but it is a hassle that I would rather avoid. Bring on the Sprint HTC EVO 3D.

Not trying to be a jerk, but how would the AT&T/T-Mobile merger make a monopoly? By the very definition of the word, it wouldn't because you'd still have Sprint, Verizon and a handful of smaller carriers out there.

So calling it a MONOpoly would be incorrect.

I'm betting the SEC allows it. Look at the Sirius/XM merger, which made a true MONOpoly....they let that one happen!

^ Jeez Someone is being a Jerk.....

Monopoly - was not MY word....Sprint's Legal Dogs tossed it out there.
I believe referencing the Size and Brute Strength this would give At&t. Making it Difficult for sprint or smaller regional carriers to compete.

Sirius/Xm - yes allowed...but who contested it. Wasn't like there were a bunch of smaller Satellite radio carriers out there...

Don/LBP - I am Torn - only 16gb in nexus s....but I only have 8 in HeroC....
evo3d WOWZER.......
Newest rumor is the that htc Kingdom is not the evo3d but instead the HERO 4G.....
WE SHALL SEE!!!!!

I hope that we all end up in the Sprint HTC EVO 3D forum together. We can continue our reign of helpfulness here and there.

The only thing that even slightly bums me out about the Sprint HTC EVO 3D is the 5 megapixel cameras, but megapixel count is not everything. I hear the CMOS on these cameras let in twice the light for better snapshots in low light situations.

Then perhaps Sprint's lawyers need to go back to school and re-learn the definition of "monopoly."

Also, Sprint could always merge with Verizon to compete. Kinda reminds me of the old Transformer cartoons where the robots would combine to beat the other giant robot, lol.
