First things first. I love the Sprint Hero, but I don’t. I mean to say I have a love hate relationship with it. I know there are a lot of gripe threads, but I have some legitimate concerns with the Sprint Hero. I have nowhere else to turn and a couple of people that post here seem to have at least have half a brain.
Sorry this is such a long thread, but I think it is important to be thorough. I have had the Hero for about 35 days now, I am on my fifth replacement phone and here are my issues.
1. 70 app limit – Why does there have to be a limit. This guy I know, knows a dude that has 905 apps on his jail broken iPhone. Why would you even send a device to market with this crippling limitation? I can think of about 120 apps that I need to run. I think I am going to have to get a second phone. Which leads me to the…
2. Lag – After I installed my about 40th app, I began to notice the phone slowing down a little. Now that I have just install my 70th app, this phone is slow as a turtle. HTC should have put a quad core processor in this phone. My new Dell dual core notebook is faster than this stupid phone. Who is running the show over there? Dimwits?
3. Phone hangs up during call – Sometimes the phone will hang up on a call when I press it against my face while lighting a cigarette driving in my car. Can’t they make a phone that knows the difference between my fingertip and my face? Smart Phone? Not so much!
4. Chipped chrome – After I dropped my phone on the tile floor, I noticed the chrome on the bottom had chipped. This is unacceptable. HTC should have used stainless steel or titanium for the trim. I tried to repair the crack with SuperGlue but now I the USB port is fill with glue. How do I get that out? Can I soak the end in acetone or gasoline? Uuuugggg!
5. Poor signal – When I go to the west side of town, in the company basement or in a tunnel the cell reception sucks! Why can’t they put a stronger radio on the Hero? I hear the Droid’s radio is so strong that it picks up reception in a bomb shelter or even underwater down to 7 atmospheres. Do you think one of those antenna stick-on strips will work to improve cell reception? I heard somewhere they will deflect a hacker’s signal that is trying to break into your cell phone too. This happened to my cousin’s friend at the mall and he got his identity stolen.
6. Keyboard – This corrective typing is a pain in my butt! I sent a text message to my pasture’s wife, complimenting her Thanksgiving attire. The message should have said,” I loved your flowered dress and oh, great boots too.” Instead, it read,” I loathed your floweZed drips and oh, greAt boobs Two.” – I was so embarrassed. The pastor won’t even look at me anymore. It’s like the keyboard has a mind of its own! They should have put a full sized USB port on the phone so I could plug in my backlit Razor gaming keyboard.
7. Dust – Oh, let’s not forget the dust problems that not only I have experienced, but almost everyone on the forum I am sure. I noticed the other my screen was covered in dust. I was almost afraid to wipe it off worrying about scratching the screen with these micro dust particles. Have you ever looked at dust under a microscope? Some of the particles can be very sharp! Why can’t they make a screen that repels dust? Is it that hard? This has happened to me several times. If this happens to you, go get a can of air or your air compressor and just blast the dust away. When my screen gets really dirty, I use a squeegee with a microfiber strip. This protects the glass.
8. Dead Pixels – I did the pixel test thing that was going around and I found 1 dead pixel on my first phone and 2 on my fourth phone. This is unacceptable. I know I can’t see them with the naked eye, but I know it is there and it bugs the hell out of me. What makes pixels die anyway?
9. Power Off button icon – I noticed one day that the off button icon seemed a little out of center on the button, so I brought the phone to my buddy that works a secret science lab (no I can’t tell you about it, it’s a secret, duh!) Anyway, with his nuclear high powered microscope, he confirmed the icon is one femtometer off center. Who engineered this phone, a 5 year old?
10. Scuff marks on the paint. How does this happen? I have never had a scuff mark on any of the previous 11 phones I have owned. Could they use a material is scratch proof for the outer shell, something like spray on bed liner for your truck, but instead for your phone? Why should I have to be burdened by using a protective case or leather carrying pouch? Get with the program HTC!
11. Trackball brightness problem – I use my phone in the dark a lot have noticed the trackball glows as bright as the sun. I swear sometimes I can feel heat radiating from the ball. I know there are other post about this, but did anyone ever figure out how to dim “The Glowing Orb of Death” < Like it? I made it up. LOL! But seriously, I now have to put a piece of black electrical tape over the ball while using it in dark situations. Now I am dreaming about a bright glowing ball that I can’t get away from. It is quite frightening. Has anyone tried to paint their trackball? Post pics please!
12. Battery Life – At this point my battery last about 30 minutes. I have to carry a battery charger everywhere I go. My friend’s iPhone last for 4 days with heavy use. Can you modify the iPhone battery to work in the Hero? Which leads to…
13. 100% awake time. Why won’t my phone ever sleep? I only want it awake why I am using it, when Latitude is on, I am receiving email, phone calls, voicemail and text messages. I keep killing tasks over and over and over, but they keep coming back!
14. Trackball behavior – This problem just arose recently! When I press my trackball my PC reboots. I guess this is a known problem. The other day I pressed my trackball and it rebooted all of the PCs in my office, all 16 of them. I was so embarrassed. My boss told me if I do that again that I would be fired. Do they have a fix for this yet?
I really love this phone a lot. I just hope when they release the next update, they get it right.
I guess the bottom line is that if Sprint could be more like ATT and the Hero could be more like the iPhone, I would be happy.
Sincerely Dan,

Danno - I'd say you had plenty of warning that you're NOT liking this phone. Five replacements? At 35 days? Really? You're not one of those drivers that motors into flooded roads or around BRIDGE OUT signs, are you? LMAO.
I too have the problem where touching the trackball on my Hero reboots my PC. I don't have any of the other problems, but this one is a showstopper for me. I demand that it be fixed.
