There's been a lot of comparison between the stock Hero and Moment but I was wondering if anyone has played with both a rooted Hero and Moment. Becoming more and more set on switching over to the Hero...
Rooted & got CL14 on my Moment last night thanks to zefie, numus, and the great guys at sdx, but maybe I just had my expectations too high as I didn't see a large improvement over the stock kernel & ROM, esp in speed (did fix the battery meter and improved battery life thank god!).
I understand rooting a Hero makes it faster but by how much? How does it compare to a rooted Moment running a home replacement app (like PandaHome)? This way I feel it's comparing apples to apples in terms of experience, as opposed to compared to a rooted Moment running stock home.
Ever since I got the Moment, I've been trying to get Sense-like stuff on it (like a lot of ppl haha). Coming from the less-sophisticated BB Curve, I was surprised when stock Android didn't support things like Facebook integration (I know it's coming in 2.1, but HTC has it now).

I just rooted my hero and installed Fresh 1.1 and so far Im liking it. Seems much more snappy. Even have panda home runnin atm and still is snappy. I will try running sence on it tomorrow, and see if there is any difference.
Tell you what, using the Fresh pre-kitchen to auto root is fantastic!

Yeah, the hacking/root support for the Hero seems fantastic. Honestly rooting the Moment was pretty easy too, took maybe 30 min tops
I'd do it with my Mom's Moment, but something tells me she wouldn't let me. She's not so tech-savvy, and would be really worried that I'd ruin the thing lol.

If yours is anything like mine (mom that is), just tell her you're making it faster haha. The guys at sdx have done a fantastic job and it's much more stable and faster than the stock kernel/ROM. Though if you don't want to Sprint officially released CL14 today.

Yeah, I told her there's an update, but the nearest repair center's 50 miles away, and it doesn't look like any of them have been prepared to update the phones.
I'll just wait until it's posted on the website and load it from my laptop.
The actual process of rooting a phone and completing that task does not make any bit of difference on battery, performance or anything measureable.
The root process allows you to load custom roms and software that makes things faster or better on battery management.
Mixed results between the Modaco Rom VS Fresh rom 1.1 as far as speed goes.
Perceivable differences are just that, perception. Take a non rooted Hero and tell someone that if they root it, it will be faster. Take the phone away for a day and give it back to them after a reboot and still not rooted but tell them you rooted it. Placebo effect will show up atleast %50 of the time here and they will tell you its faster.

you know, I'm not sure anyone's done an actual experiment between the ROM's, using timed measures and multiple timings in each case. It'd certainly be interesting to see the results of something like that.
I loaded Modaco the other night, and didn't like it compared to Fresh1.1, mostly because of the aesthetic changes in Fresh right away, but Modaco also seemed to change so many other things. If Modaco's kitchen is ever free, I think there will be so much ease of customization that both would be great options.
Just to clarify the speed difference... There is no comparison between the moment and the hero once they are both set correctly.. the moment will be faster then the hero (it is a simple fact of Qualcomm MSM 7200A vs Samsung S3C6410)... The difference in stock moment tho is because android is really vanilla.. i mean plain, incredibly bland vanilla.. They took the stock Kernel and put it on the phone.. Zefie's kerne roms redo the kernel to optimize it to take advantage of the s3c6410 instead of a "generic" processor..
Just wanted to get that out of the way..
as for ROM development.. it all depends on how the rom was configured and optimized... There is no real direct comparison
