If I download the pdanet tethering app to my htc hero, will my ipod touch be able to work off my phone?
I know it's probably a stupid question but I am new to all of this.
I know there is a free version and paid version of that app.....which should I get? Again, be kind, I'm a newbie!
Your iPod should have no problem finding the wireless signal sent by your Hero. I have an Eris, which is virtually the same thing, so I would assume most of this will hold true. The differences between the paid and free versions varies, but the two most popular, PDANet and EasyTether, limit online time and block secured sites (https:, such as Facebook) I have not extensively used any of these because my Eris is rooted so I have a different wireless tether.
Most things should see your connection, assuming they support ad-hoc mode, which is all the android platform will currently support. Laptops, iPods, should be fine, but it probably won't be recognized by any other android devices. Happy tethering!

I use FB all the time while running either one. I don't know where you got that info from, but from personal experience I have not found it to be true.

Pdanet is a wired tether. You need the root app wireless tether to run your ipod. I don't believe you can run your ipod with your current setup... I could be wrong, though.

This is true. However, if the computer was using the tether, then I think iPod could use it as well if he plugged it in via USB. Don't know though cause I don't own an iPod.

Are you asking if you can connect the Ipod via Wire to the Hero? Even Wirelessly? I don't think that is possible other than maybe the remote possibility of file transfer, in that case you would be looking more for it via adhoc networking... which is why I'm assuming the mentioning of PDAnet. There are some other apps that could try to do it (network connecting the two devices) but ultimately I think it will fail. Maybe tell us exactly what is it you wish to accomplish if and at all if the two devices were to connect and communicate.
I must admit, I've not used these programs long enough to see the access expire, but that seems to be the placed limitations.
Huh. I guess it's possible that I have not hit the 14 day mark yet with PDAnet. As for easytether, I use it for secure sites, so I don't know. Maybe I just got lucky. I don't use the tethering that much either, so maybe that helps. Though I did leave PDAnet on all night one time at a friends house, so who knows?

I don't think you can unless you're rooted. The wifi tether app (for root users) makes the phone a wifi hotspot. But you can't root your phone unless you are still on 1.5.
PDANet and EasyTether limit online time and block secured sites
The only thing that's time-limited in the free version of PdaNet is the ability to connect to https sites. That expires in 14 days.

Then you haven't passed 14 days. I can confirm that after 14 days I could no longer connect to https sites.

I did not know this. Thanks for the clarification. I use wifi tether when I need it, but have pdanet installed for the drivers because of the sync issue.. It is good to know, in case I need it.
