I've just downloaded handcent sms for my hero and am so far pretty impressed with its features apart from the fact that every time I receive an sms I get 2 notifications and 2 copies of the message - 1 in hancent and 1 in the original sms application. My question is how do I set handcent as my default sms receiver and get rid of the original from my homescreen? I have a shortcut on my homescreen which still shows that i have messages even though I've read them in handcent, and I don't know how to get rid of the original app from there. Hope someone can help.
1) to get rid of the notifications from the original app simply go into it and hit: Menu->Settings-> uncheck Notifications near the bottom of the settings list. This will then disable the app from alerting you and then handcent will only give notifications
2) to remove the shortcut from the homescreen simply longpress on the icon and drag it to remove at the bottom of the screen, you can then add a shortcut to handcent by using the '+' icon at the bottom of your homescreen and select 'Shortcut->Program->Handcent Sms'
hope that's of help to you

Am having the same issue too.. 2 notifications..
Even after I have defaulted the handcent sms, i get 2 notifications in the bar. Disappears only after i open the standard msg app....
I dont see anything called Notifications in my settings screen. So the question remains:
If you have Handcent, how do you disable the Hero sms from checking and receiving the same texts that Handcent does and also showing it in the tool/status bar on the top?
Click on the messaging program that comes with the phone so it runs. click menu and then scroll down to notification settings. click the tick box next to notification so theres no tick there and that should stop you getting 2 notifications for your messages.
ah, ok thanks. I see now where Dean wrote "go into it" meaning opening the Hero's sms program and then click menu>settings etc. I didnt put 2 and 2 together with how that was written.
All is fine now. Phone is showing awake 21%. SWEET!
Am I the only one who prefers the default messaging app? I just like the clean simplicity of it. I've tried handcent and chomp and cant see what the big deal is.
No, I really like it at well for those same reasons, plus the fact you saw the persons picture in the threads. Handcent isn't bad, I do like the fact the conversation can appear as bubbles and that you can add pictures to it. The pop up messages are good to, but at time annoying, and seemed to drain the battery for me?? I'm thinking I might go back to the default after they work out the kinks with the main message app.
I like chomp purely for the chat bubbles. I was using handcent but it has a bug where the messages sometimes vanish when you open the app after recieving them.
I've had that problem too a couple of times, where I've had a message and it's just disappeared when I tried to read it.
Actually, I wonder if anyone knows anything about the predictive text bar (the bit where it gives you options as to the words you might be typing) moving so that it covers the bottom row of letters? It's so annoying because I can't type most of the words without choosing the first part of the word first to get rid of it, and then finishing it off. Taking 3 times as long to do anything.
I do like Handcent but I'm thinking I might switch back to the default Hero service because these issues are getting a bit frustrating.
I've redownloaded Handcent as I also wanted the time the message was ent to me.
One thing I can't figure out is how to get the trackball on my Hero to light up when I receive a message in Handcent. I've got the opiton checked for it to light up in both Handcent and the Main Hero notifications bar but no luck. It does when Handcent isn't installed and I'm using the default messaging client. Anyone have any fixes? Thanks

Had a few issues with chomp, notably it not receiving all messages. Handcent is awesome though, don't see any bugs with it, no messages disappearing, it also uses the contacts picture too.
I prefer the default messaging app as well. I haven't figured a way to disable incoming SMS notification from both Handcent and default app, so while I had Handcent installed, I always got two notifications at once, with two different envelope icons in notification bar (or even three when I also had Chomp installed).
On the other hand, I liked the interface of Handcent and its customizability. Does anyone have advice on how to configure the apps to only get one SMS notification? (Besides uninstalling the default messaging app - I don't want to do that, no idea where I would get it back from.)

Just make sure all the other apps youre not using have all the notifications unchecked? that's all i did anyway...
I was happy with the main message app also, but everyone said it drained the battery...so I'm using Handcent/Chomps.
I prefer the main messaging app, as well. But the battery issue is only on CDMA version, correct? I haven't experienced the battery drain issue on my Hero (GSM).
It seems like a lot of bugs were introduced in the CDMA version.
i would add a pic but not sure how....but the notification box is def un-checked...and so is the auto-retrieve...and it has been, and I have still been rcving pop up windows from og sms

So just to confirm:
You are getting 2 sms notifications in the notification bar, 1 from handcent AND 1from the default sms application? ie, each sms you get 2 notifications?
I have auto retrieve on handcent, but I have turned it off in default sms, but I am still getting text pop ups in default....arrrgh
Welll... its strange, i stopped notifications from default sms app and i removed it from the homepage, then restarted my phone, and its not even showing up on the taskmanager now...
I have a question though, do you know where are the sms and mms stored?? dont tell me its stored on internal memory, its crap enough as it is!

does that help?
Ok so that helps. Basically you are getting only one notification, which is right as you turned it off on the default sms app, but you get a pop up from the default instead.
The default doesn't have a pop up function, so did you install another app that does this instead?
Ok, so I'm a new droid user and really like it so far. I really needed to be able to send text messages to groups. I did some investigating and found Handcent. Really looks a lot like my Iphone when I had it. Like it so far, but the UI is a little cumbersome. Anywho.....
When I do send group messages, I get individual bubbles for each and every person that was in the group. Any ideas as to how to get the app. to just show the 1 bubble that went to everyone? Did I explain that correctly?
Also, is there a good movie app like Fandango or Movie Phone for the android 2.0 OS?
hi i am using handcent sms and on two occasions out of about 30 sms the message has alerted me in the top bar and i can read it but when i go into handcent i lose the message.pretty annoying and on the verge of an uninstall.anyone know why or another decent sms app.(used chomp but wouldnt let me send pictures)
I have the latest version of Handcent and even after removing it, clearing texts, disabling the native Messaging notifications, etc, for some reason I am still getting the Handscent pop-up and it's eating my battery. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It's very strange, as it just started doing this last week. I have verified that I have pop-ups disabled in Handscent. Help !
So, has anyone else experienced the Pop-Up issue that I am having with Handcent? Please HELP ! I have again tried removing all messages, rebooting, removing Handcent, reinstalling, setting Handcent to default and disabling the Pop-ups, yet they are still popping-up.
Thanks

I have handcent as my default sms client, I disable notification from the sms android sms client so whenever I receive a txt the only notification I get is from handcent. Ok, so far no problem, my problem is that wherever txt I receive comes to my phone 2 times, like the same msg doubled and this is so annoying, I tried searching for a fix for this problem everywhere and didn't find anywhere, can someone help me here?

I have been toying with Handcent, however find that I cannot save any messages to my SIM. Am I missing something? Can do in the standard message program quite easily, just can't seem to find how to in this one.
I really like that handcent gives you the options to have your phone vibrate and make a sound when you send a text so that you know it went through. I have all of these setting turned on (even notification in status bar to see if it would work) but its not vibrating or making a noise OR showing up in the status bar. I would really just like to be able to make it vibrate and make a noise. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. THANKS! I should also mention that when I first installed Handcent, this setting did work and then all of the sudden it stopped vibrating and making the noise that I had set for when I send a message. PLEASE HELP ME!
Is there any way to get rid of the annoying pop up window that shows everytime I forward a text message asking if I want to add 'Fwd' to the start of the message? Maybe a 'Dont show this message again' tick box or something in settings to turn it off? It's really annoying!
I am a paramedic and would like to make a theme for myself with the star of life (I have the pic in many different formats) and I want my words to be blue and the other persons words to be red. Could anyone tell me how to make this theme. Thanks- Mark
I have a really stupid problem. It MUST be user error.....
When I try to send a message via Handcent the #$!%!! application doesn't find any of the people in my contacts. I can type in a person's name and then input a long message and it bombs out telling me there is no valid address. WTF? I can't possibly remember everybody's freaking cell number and extension for whatever service they have!
Standard messaging works great on the phone - if you can call the standard messaging feature great. I can input "Paul" or "Chris" or "colleen" or whatever the heck I like and the app knows who I'm trying to send the message to. Handcent doesn't have a clue and I can't find anywhere in the settings to point it in the right direction or whatever is needed to make it work.
I see LOTS of folks loving this app but, if I can't send a message with it, the thing is useless to me.
Please........ Somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong here. This can't be all that difficult but I can't seem to make it work.
My brother sends a message as a group message to my family..
Example
Brother-have a great dy..love you all
Anytime anyone responds to it I get it as well! Its so annoying! How do I stop that??
