Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere (apologies if I've missed it) but I randomly thought I'd check for updates on my unbranded Hero and something actually came up!
It's a G-Sensor calibration tool so nothing exciting but I wasn't expecting anything ever again after getting 2.1!
Screen:
I had no data loss problems whatsoever during the update.
Will post what's happened after the update completes.
Update:
Took about five minutes for the device to fully reboot into the phone after the progress bar reached the end so don't be tempted to turn it off during this process.
Nothing new on my Orange, 2.1 either. Though I'm pretty sure I had that calibration thing already from 1.5... or did I lose it with the update and not notice?
Since you're on 1.5 and i am guessing you're running stock 1.5 (3's version) then the option isn't there. It's only on unlocked/generic roms i think

It's like in the images, it's a kinda spirit level and when the phone's apps use tilt it aids that

Calibration tool is missing from 2.1. It was in 1.5, there was a thread from a member on here who was none too pleased, contacted HTC. Perhaps it's his and other's efforts we have it.

(Orange 2.1 updates are numbered 3.35XXX so, I guess, are set after this one...)
Again, it was in 1.5 but was missing from the 1st releases of 2.1
I've just updated to this calibration tool and it's wiped the clock, and numerous other widgets from my home screens.
My advice is make sure you save the theme before you do it.
I know it's hardly something major but it's a bit of a pain once you have all your screens set up how you like them and they get wiped.
Its great having an g-calibration, when half of the htc widget are missing...
The Clock, and Calender widget from HTC disapeared from the homescreens and arent available in the add menu either. (I'm not able to get them even with the update function).

Any Ideas? Would like to have my widgets back.
Which country you are from? I want the G-sensor too.
So today I got an answer (for my 2 months old question) from htc that the FOTA is getting official, asked her if she can give me more info. Will see . I still dont have it though. Anyone got it?

Ah I got it too (after installing I rooted back ) (Slovakia , Stock 2.1, Unbranded rooted with 1 click) but it didnt stall. It took it half an hour to install. I think when rebooting 10-15 mins. (Someone said its erasing the cache.)

when home screen is shown, menu-settings-programs-administer programs,in there find htc sense and press clear data, same for the weather widget in there , then you will get it back!
OK guys, I am back. I got a response from HTC customer service after searching for solutions and trying literally everything (including what HTC told me to do). If your phone gets stuck on the HERO logo after this last update, you can try what I did.
2. Boot your phone into the bootloader - hold down the VOLUME DOWN key and then press POWER (or hold it for a bit) for the phone to boot up. It will boot into the bootloader.
3. Press the BACK key to switch the phone to FASTBOOT mode.
4. Connect the USB cable. Drivers should get installed to your PC (check in Device Manager under Android Phone) and the FASTBOOT on the phone should change to FASTBOOT USB.
5. Run the .exe file from step #1 and follow the instructions. You should see the installation process on your phone.
NOTE:do this only if you can't start up your phone any other way as this downgrades the software AND wipes all your data!!!
EDIT #1: if you got this problem from updating to the latest update, DO NOT UPDATE AGAIN IF YOU GET YOUR HERO WORKING!
EDIT #2: if you get ERROR170 when trying to update the ROM, uninstall and reinstall HTC Sync.

The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to robogo For This Useful Post:
Just erase the cache/data of the htc sense (settings >>>aplications>>> manage aplications>>> find htc sense and erase the cache/data you will loose the sense settings but the widgets should come back)

But I'm not so sure what's the problem anymore. I thought one of my apps may be causing the problem, but the same happened to a fresh, clean installation, previously factory reset with data and cache wiped.
Maybe the "locked to Tele2" if there is nothing else other as to others working heroes. Are you sure they dont add some of their menus - settings? I would contact Tele2 also if I was you, just in case you are not alone on your network.

Nope, definitely not it. The phone is not branded or modified in any way, it's a stock Hero running 2.1 at the moment. Currently, most of the stuff is back up on the phone and it's working fine.
But this time I won't apply the last update. Oh, hell no!
Till now you are the only one having trouble with this update (not counting ppl in which rooted and made changes to their roms)
And since your android is fine - working. Maybe it could have something to do with your carrier . And asking them you might get an answer of not updating till htc doesnt fix something for you.
I lost all my HTC widgets in this upgrade. However they all became available again when I used the search for more HTC widgets thing at the top of the widget page. I looked at one i already had installed. When i returned they were all back for selection.
Much appreciated I'm gonna wait for the response from HTC, and we'll go from there
By any chance, did Michaela write you from htc?
Anyway good luck with that . With one of my issues their response time was 2 months since posting the ticket there (was the first reaction, like "we got your ticket"). But they responded , with this update actually :P . Was kinda funny I forgot I had the ticket there and in my mail a week ago "Hello etc etc. New update etc etc"
Now I am waiting the third week for a response to my other ticket (exchanged already several mails). Btw the response of the rep is nice (Fast and she is nice). The tech guys aint that fast or so nice for that mattter (when they think they cleared you)
So I am not completely OT. Anyone noticed something else then just having the calibration(and "missing" widgets)? (I mean the update patched every app)
This G-Sensor calibration tool was there all the time.
How can I get it without update???
Install Any Cut application from the Market. Run it. Choose "New shortcut" and after that "Activity". Now, you get a list of your phone activities in alphabeticaly order. And... G-sensor Calibration should appear... select it (don't forget to make some room on the home screen before that)... and you're done!!!
No update, just a small application, but very useful after all!

Not sure that htc would make such a mistake stating that they didnt include it and it was always there. You have an unbranded HERO STOCK rom right? No Orange, T-mobile bla bla. Just a stock unbranded from none carrier?
If so does it save the calibration settings? Just try to calibrate it holding it in different positions and test if it remembers the position.

Got it from Orange.
I test it over and over and is not a joke. It does the job.
I think this update is just to point that (like a shortcut).
It's... quietly brilliant isn't it?
Even folks at HTC say it's an uncommon issue for the phone to freeze up like that during reboot from an update install.
And, of course, there's nothing new they've advised me to do and that I haven't already tried. And I really don't feel like resurrecting my phone for the third time, it was stressful enough the first two times. Plus, I am always on the move and can't afford to be phoneless.
Is the sensor calibration the only thing in this last update?

Try this (must have 2.1):

As far as the ppl say no. It patches all apps but no idea with what. But the kernel/radio stays the same. (Some say its faster, but I would say just cuz it erases the cache after longer use it gets slower again)
Do the thing that scaparici says
And since you said you tried everything I suppose you called your carrier right?
