I was wondering, is there a photo app that changes the shutter speed? I have seen digital cameras that do that, it's normally some milliseconds or so, like the Hero camera speed, but you can change it to even 1 minute!!! This works great for taking cool pictures of the night sky.
So is that even possible, with the fact being that mobile cameras are fully digital and probably don't even have an actual shutter and all, but still... anyone knows anything? Can there EVER be an app for that?

Also, root. Which is the best bet right about now? It's about time, the 2.1 official is good but simply.. not enough! Also the camera crashes the phone allot (reboot). Now does anyone know why that's happening?

Do you want just root access or a custom ROM? And it's a custom ROM, do you want 2.1/2.2 HTC Sense/Vanilla?

I dunno? 2.2 is sweet but will it run on this phone? I mean, it IS meant for the 1GHz ones, isn't it?
I just want to get the best out of my phone with no bugs and access root apps like apps2sd.
I didn't even know I could have root access in my own default rom, I though using a custom one goes without saying. I guess I got that wrong.

Sounds like you want a more stable 2.1 ROM then, so villain 12 might be the one for you. It's based on the official 2.1 update, but seems to be less buggy than the one HTC produced. Then obviously it comes with all the root benefits such as app2sd and overclocking.

Ok, so this is how it's done:

- Put this file and this file onto the root of your sdcard.
- Install the second file, the rooting one, using Astro or any other file manager. I've never done this, but I gather it's a simple process. That will root your current firmware.
- Download 'ROM Manager' from the market.
- Tell it to Install Clockwork Recovery.
- Then scroll to the bottom and tell it to flash the alternative recovery: amon ra.
- When that's done, turn off the phone.
- Reboot holding Home + Power and you should get a menu with green text with Amon Ra at the bottom.
- Plug the phone in via USB and then click USB-MS Toggle from the main menu, mounting your sdcard.
- Copy everything from the sdcard to your PC, or it will be lost.
- Disable MS on the phone
- Partiton the SDcard to SWAP: 0 Ext: 500ishMB (for apps) Fat: The remainder (for your normal files).
- Enable MS again, move all your files back and disable MS.
- Go on Backup/Resotre and do a nandroid backup
- Go to the wipe submenu and do a factory reset, cache wipe and dalvik-cache wipe.
- Go to the main menu and flash villain 12.

You can use an app like titanium backup, once rooted, to backup/restore apps. Make sure to only back up user apps though, not system ones. Likewise, anything else not on saved on the sdcard/synced to google will have to be backed up.

I think that's how it's done. The initial rooting process might be a little more complicated, but I rooted mine back in the 1.5 days so I'm not 100% sure.

EDIT: I didn't see your edits. Yes, you can run 2.2 on our phones. It runs faster than 2.1 does actually, due to improvements google made in 2.2. However, you lose HTC Sense and they are somewhat less stable than 2.2 ROMs. Same process though if that's what you want.

Wow, thanks! I actually didn't expect all that much detail. I just wanted from someone to guide me on what ROM should I use, not how to go on through the whole process, I would go to "all things root" thread for that.
So sorry to have to spend your time again but some last things to clear this up. What would be lost if I were to drop ht-sense for 2.2 and which is the best 2.2 ROM right about now, for it looks that's where I'll be headed eventually.

Heh, it's ok. I may have got a bit carried away..... In my defence, I'm not sure if any of our guides in the all things root section are up to date with 2.1. So I decided to work through the process properly (plus, I spend so much of my time here telling people how to do and haven't done it my self :P). I'm sure it will come in handy in the future

HTC Sense, unlike most launcher apps, contains - The homescreen and app menu, all of the HTC Widgets, HTC apps (e.g. the calculator, email, whether, the dialler and so on) and the theme (vanilla android looks different). However, you can always add a theme to your custom ROM, replace the apps with things such as Dialer One (A Sense style dialer), and get the donate version of Launcher Pro. The free version is great, better than HTC Sense as a launcher IMO, but the donate one comes with lots of Sense style widgets. I don't honestly miss HTC Sense, but it does take a little effort to get back features you miss.

Froyo ROMs are changing all the time, but at the moment I would vote for Elelinux 2.0 with Flykernel11. It has some nice themes, including one pretty much the same as the HTC Sense one.

I just pray to God one of these days I'll find the time to try any of these.

Sorry it took so long but I finally had it with the stock ROM, it's just unbearable and won't be updated anytime soon so I would like to try to install the Elelinux 2.0 with Flykernel11 as you suggested, only thing... simply I don't know how :?
Do I proceed following your guide but replace your "this" and "that" files with boot.img or... something else?
I simply can't make heads or tails with the guide here [ROM]FROYO_2.2_RC1_Android_Stock (updated 2010-10-29)[ROM] - xda-developers neither the contents of those "FROYO_2.2_RC1_Android_Stock.zip" and "FlyKernel-11c.zip" I've just downloaded.
Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need to open the FROYO_2.2_RC1_Android_Stock.zip or the elelinux.zip. You just flash them as a whole.

Here's my finalised set of instructions . So when I mention the ROM.zip, thats FROYO_2.2_RC1_Android_Stock.zip. And the flykernel is one of the extra zips you flash at the end.

I don't think you have the right kernel file there though, judging by the name. You want to pick one from this list (he links to that page from the one you were reading).

There are a lot of different files there, so what overclocking speed are you planning on using? Do you mind if there's no boot animation? (It speeds up booting).

Just finished, btw you are my new Hero, thanks for all the help!!
One last thing though, that backup I did for the old firmware. Where is it located? Restoring it would require the same steps?

It's in a folder called nandroid on your sdcard. To restore it, just do a nand restore from the recovery menu.

It's a good idea to make more backups occasionally (you can have as many as you want, so long as you have space) if you're ever playing around with it.

Ok after fooling around with Froyo which is great unlike my old stock Eclair Rom I've noticed some stuff and have some even more questions.

(Actually I figured this out, it has to do with a setting in ADWLauncher\System Preferences\Wallpaper Hack).

I'm not in the U.S. and thus the market doesn't show paid apps. Is there any way to fix that?

What's up with the overclocking widget? Shall I use it? Does it do any work? Is it dangerous?

Sometimes I reboot the phone and some widgets disappear, leaving a loading error message where the widget used to be. They also disappear from the widgets selects menu. Reinstalling the app seems to solve the problem but it happens again and again after each boots.

I couldn't find any decent youtube downloader like the youtube ripper app fom Eclair that incorporates into the youtube stock app. I specifically want to open my subscriptions and download all, yes ALL, the new videos, with one button if possible something that even ripper couldn't do. Anyone knows an app like that?

One last thing, not really a question but... anyway Angry birds is out on Android and I was wondering why even though the Hero can't play that game, it still shows at market. Shouldn't there have been a flag for phones that can't actually play it? Why is it that it can't play anyway? I mean it does play with 5 fps, instead of 30 which is really crap, thus not actually be playable.
