Just a bug fix?
So does this mean bad news for a 2.1 ROM, if they think they cant wait to just add this to a 2.1? Pointing to them not being anywhere near ready for a 2.1 release?

I wondered if it might have gone, so i downloaded it earlier today. Strange that there was no correspondance from HTC, I'm sure they would have told us via Twitter, but nothing...
What if it is 2.1, but they didn't mean to put it up? I will install in a couple of hours. I can promise there will be tears, but of happiness? i'm not sure yet...
Device(s): Damn BB at the mo, but Samsung Galaxy S2 soon come...

Just downloading it now... Cable is at home though so will have to do the update when I get home from the office... Will report any findings when done... Unless Lekky gets to it first!
ROM upgrade for the HTC Hero
An updated ROM is now available to download. It doesn't include any new features or programs but does provide improved handset performance.
Installed HTC Sync on your PC to allow your phone to connect to it. You'll download and run the update on the PC which will then pass it on to the Hero through a USB cable.
If you don't have HTC Sync installed then click here .
Written down the serial number of your device. You can find it by removing the battery to reveal a white patch with text on it in the format S/N: HTxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or S/N: SZxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Backed up or saved all of your data to another location (you can store it on your PC using HTC Sync), as everything in your handset will be wiped once the new ROM is installed.
Confirmed that this software upgrade is a newer version than the one currently installed on your phone. If it's the same version (and your phone is operating normally), you don't need to reinstall.
To check the version installed on your phone, press Home > Menu > Settings > Aboutphone > Buildnumber and note the Build number. If it reads 2.73.61.5 then you're up to date.
Removed your memory card from the handset.
Checked that the battery has a minimum of 50% capacity. To check tap Home > Menu > Settings > Aboutphone > Status > Batterylevel.
Connected your phone to your PC using a USB cable. The PC must recognise your phone. You will see a sync icon in the taskbar once the phone has been connected.
Disabled Standby and Hibernation mode on your PC.
Closed all running applications on the PC (except HTC sync).
Disabled the Screen unlock pattern on the handset if you have it setup: press Home > Menu > Settings > Security and uncheck Require pattern.
If you're currently running 2.73.61.5 then I wouldn't bother upgrading to .66. I suspect it's merely to bring Orange handsets into line with the latest generic ROM, and also the recent H3G update, both of which are .66 releases. I wouldn't be surprised to see a T-Mobile one appear in the next week or two also.
Just as a bit of a noob question and probably been asked loads but what is the best way to backup and restore
Hey. i dont really backup any of my settings but contacts and calendar are backup in gmail google accounts if thats what you have setup. how are your contacts saved on the phone? if you have a quick search on this forum theres lots of ways to backup from apps to just not bothering and letting the google syncdo it for you. i dont bother backing up ... but thats just me.
there really is a problem with win 7 and sync . the update worked first time on xp
build is now 2.73.61.66

None of the things previously mentioned are new apart from the 3x3 people widget. I have been trawling for new info and have seen mentions of a radio update to 8.3 and some people reporting further speed increase and reliability of wi-fi and touch flo.
Until i see further evidence I won't be upgrading but I look forward to further comments from those who have talen the plunge.
Updated, And speed seems abit faster, other than that everythings the same really, just a feeling as mentioned above that its an update to bring it in line with the 3 and T mobile Networks
I have Wi-fi analyser & I don't know whether there are now more routers in flats near me but it seemed to be able to find loads last night, that didn't appear before. So better wi-fi ?
Completely agree, whats the point of going through the upgrade process which is very painful as it wipes your phone and you have start again. Granted you have backups to a level but never seems to be seemless when calling these back.
And why are HTC and Orange giving us no information on what the upgrade is actually for. My phone is on the last revision and works well. Pointless doing the upgrade!
I don't think this looks good for any 2.1 update soon. Why bother bringing out a new ROM with a tiny change here and there when 2.1 is round the corner.
Realistically are we going to get 2.1 on Orange? Not quite sure what it is that they are doing to it but whatever it is can't take this long... Would it be better to wipe the Orange build and whack on a standard HTC 2.1 build?
I'm not sure it's that straightforwad Capricorn20. If 2.1 doesn't turn up soon I'll probably go down the rooting/custom ROM road. And by soon I mean a few months not a few weeks.
