I'm still slightly wary of this, and although it "sounds" right, I'm not totally believing anything unless announced directly from HTC (twitter or otherwise).
It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm not impatient for 2.1 to come along, my phone works for me just fine as it is and, although I'l be happy about the new 2.1 features, I can wait.
But, in the three short months that I've had a smart phone, I've been astounded that this industry seems to see it as the accepted business model to communicate with it's customers and supporters via rumour, innuendo, leaks and half truths...totally unbelievable!!!
Why the hell they can't just officially tell us when it's coming is beyond me. Even the computer games industry makes an official 'ball park' release date for their products, and then gives a clear and firm release date nearer to the time.
Here we are, supposedly two or three short weeks away from the 2.1 update, and there's still nothing official. The best we've got is a 'semi official leak'

Astounding, it really is..
I usually avoid the 2.1 rants as I have tried some of the leaked roms and other than Nav it really isn't something to get all angry over.
But I agree that it is surprising that HTC have not spent 20 seconds firing off an email to Engadget.

Its ironic that HTC philosophy is all about looking after the customer yet Ivie found HTC to be the worst company ive come across for keeping the customer informed.
So lets just say that this is true (prolly not), what would be the release date for my asian unbranded unlocked hero? Its got a chinese keyboard but im not sure exactly where its from. Thanks

Hey there! I think the link from the first post has the info you are looking for. They say late april/may.
Cheers
All that HTC have said is it would be ready in 1st quarter, if they release on their website on April 2nd then they'll just be off 2 days. They'd want to get the Legend and Desire out the gates first and updates would follow. Its always going to take the carrier a bit longer to release, same as when they did their lag fix.
Problem with fixed dates is the rush to hit the deadline, if something wasn't right then it gives them a few days to play with if the specific date isn't fix just a approximate time scale is given.

If your carrier hasn't branded your Hero, which if it is small I suspect not, then you would just update using the stock rom.... Is yours the European Hero?
Frankly, the guys from HTC have never specified an exact day... Try googling around and you won't even find a Q1 or H1 statement. Everything they've said is that it's coming...

Sorry, but you seem to have missed the point utterly. The point being made above was the diabolically bad communications from HTC - the fact that a date has been thrown around all over the internet without contradiction or even mitigation from HTC meerly confirms this fact. Similarly to the poster above, I'm in no particular rush for 2.x, but HTC's communication capabilities are frankly embarrassing.
Love the phone just the way it is.
Whats everyone gonna want after 2.1 release?
Not sure why people buy a phone then immediately wanna change the way it works.
Im not gonna lose sleep whether the update comes out in April 2010 or April 2015.

While the ROM itself may not be anything to get your knickers in a twist about, the fact that more and more apps are only available for 1.6+ or even 2.0+ ROM's is a good enough reason to be getting the hump.
Im not gonna lose sleep whether the update comes out in April 2010 or April 2015.
You might feel differently if you'd paid for apps months ago that have been constantly developed and improved and now can't be installed on 1.5-based devices.

I can't say for sure. What is the current build number installed?

That's exactly the problem.
As for HTC being bad at communication, T-Mobile-UK are even worse
I'm bored of people complaining that HTC aren't telling us when 2.1 is coming out.
Why would they pin themselves down like that? It's a FREE upgrade. When it comes, it's a bonus. They have made no committment to the customer, financial or otherwise, so stop complaining as if they have.
Also, who here can say exactly when they'll be upgrading their Hero to the official HTC 2.1 firmware? Nobody. Why? Because we're waiting on them to do something, like they're probably waiting for somebody else to do something too.
And nobody has said anything is official, the only folks who can say when it's ready are HTC. So stop complaining that they "keep delaying" it, when they haven't made any announcements in the first place.
And do not take any notice of the original post, as a date if not confirmed at all. The article clearly states "unofficial". In other words, somebody said, "my mate told me that his mate told him...".
Besides, as far as I am aware, HTC have not released an official feature list of what will be included with the 2.1 update anyhow, so what are we getting all excited about? A new version number?
Having said that, does anybody know when it'll be released? ...as I'm getting really excited.

You don't have to read their posts, y'know....
I can understand peoples' frustration. They perhaps rely on apps, which may have received significant development, that can't be updated to the latest version due to incompatibility with 1.5. I'm in that position myself and while not a show-stopper, it is becoming irksome.
