India has got 2.1 update. It was scheduled to roll out on July 10th. Fortunately setting the date to July 10th has given me a popup asking me if I want to download 2.1 you might wanna try that.
2.1 as read is amazingly fast. Its been a hour since I updated and am still playing with it. I dont see speech to text option.. can anyone help? Thanks and hope you guys get 2.1 soon Namaskar
I've been following this for a while and as I am on the 3uk network and have had no luck with the moving the date forward trick thought I'd contact HTC directly; the reply is as follows:
Thank you for contacting us. HTC will soon be releasing the Android Éclair update for HTC Hero users. In order to upgrade successfully, Hero users must first install an update to the onboard OTA downloader. This will roll out across Europe starting from this week and will be flagged when the Hero next automatically checks for software updates. When Hero users receive the prompt to download and install this update, they should do so as this will allow them to detect and download the second, larger Éclair update. Once the preliminary update has been rolled out, the Éclair update will then follow. As this upgrade will wipe all data on the handset, Hero users should ensure any important data has been backed up before proceeding with the installation. Due to the size of the update, wherever possible, we would advise using a WiFi connection for this download to avoid additional data charges. we will investigate why our collegue said what she said. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Kind regards, Federico F. HTC
India was released a couple of days ago as posted by vj and any future date (more than 2 weeks) will force the phone to check for an update. Glad you've got it though!
Silverback,
Nothing new here unfortunately. It's the standard response that HTC have given out for quite some time.
I'd brace myself for a bit of a wait if I were you though as '3' seem to be the runt of the litter when it comes to updates.

Reason: Grammar.
Logically speaking, tomorrow (29th) should see 2.1 rolling out for Europe (going on the fact HTC said the second stage of the update process would happen two weeks after the prep download).

Hi! I'm waiting for the 2.1 update on Three Mobile in the UK. I am yet to have any notification for downloading the Preliminary update. I'm guessing until I get that part it's pointless expecting the eclair update.
The most frustrating part of this is trying to get any information from the customer services dept at Three. I recently received an email from HTC claiming that the update was being supplied to operators for them to check etc before rolling it out. However upon contacting Three, nobody on their call desks knew anything about the update or any plans to release one. I frustratedly asked if they could put me through to a department that might have an idea about it, I was told that my issue would be forwarded to the appropriate dept and they would get back to me. That was on Friday just gone and I'm still waiting.....
Any news from Orange re update. Do we on Orange have to wait for 1st OTA update before we can get 2.1?
Who knows ... the HTC support website won't allow us (on Orange UK) to install the 2.73.405.5 update which they say is necessary for the 1st OTA so it's possible that our current ROM doesn't need the 1st OTA and will already accept the full 2.1 whenever it gets pushed out. Really little point hassling customer services (HTC or Orange) about it as they're unlikely to be told anything about it until the updates hit the handsets and cause all sorts of new problems!
Seriously people, lets have some positive vibes! I'm putting away my pitchfork until Wednesday
Wouldn't it be logical for HTC to actually communicate with their user community, via one of the variety of channels they have available, to stop what must be hundreds of emails a day from customers asking when the 2.1 upgrade is going to be released ?
Wouldn't it also be logical to inform the carriers that there even is an upgrade in the pipeline ?
Not being funny, but for a company that produces high tech communication devices, they're pretty crap at communicating !

Agreed. I'm not going to reiterate myself, but this has been my biggest bugbear with HTC. When people have been waiting for this update since (about) last November the odd post would have gone along way.
Tweeting/Facebook posting about partying and corporate awards feels like they're just rubbing our faces in it.
i just noticed that since the pre update google Maps and other GPS apps lon longer seem to be able to use the GPS, they gps icon never even appears, does any one else have this issue ?

Mines still 'working', in as much as accuracy is 'within 500m'...

I know this Sounds a bit obvious, but the update may have turned your Gps off, have you checked?
Not sure about who gets what. Trying to follow the news on twitter. Still, Mark Moons, CEO HTC BENELUX, said that for example Heros from the Belgian carrier MOBISTAR still had to wait for an update...
COME ON ORANGE!!!! I really hope we dont have to end up waiting another month just for being on orange, hopefully that timetable is correct though, and tomorrow is our day!
Indeed, I'm waiting for first success stories and/or error reports, but looks like everyone has their hands and eyes glued to their download progress bars. Including me, of course.
yup can confirm all data still there apart from a fresh home screen again, its snappy but my only problem is the heat that its now generating from the back and all my facebook friends are now in my contacts list and everythings all confuzzled. other than that am so bloody happy now feels like a new phone i do feel sorry for those branded and still waiting, hopefully not left for you guys.
Downloading it now. Unbranded on Orange.
Am I going to lose everything from my fone then?
Would it be poss to simply cnnect to the pooter ad move EVERYTHING accross then move it back?

This is NOT FAIR!!! I HATE ORANGE!! Have fun guy, those who have it.
It's not fair how long anybody's had to wait, but you can't whine that it's taking longer for Orange to update their add-on software; that's kind of to be expected, you should've known that when they subsidized your handset.
LOL, mine just restarted, with an hTC screen saying 'quietly brilliant', oh the irony; quiet for months sure, let's see how brilliant... but I doubt it's gonna be so brilliant to warrant the wait.
anyone know how to remove facebook contacts that get added to "PHONE"? I know i can change view in people but i do not want to use that everytime to use my phone. got about 80 extra contacts and all there numbers.
