HTC hero and headphone jack problem
Hi,
I got my HTC hero on Orange last week and it's great - everything worked great, but after a day the headphone jack stopped working: when I plug in the headphones they aren't recognised by the device, eg : music will carry on playing on the speaker instead of playing in headphones.
Happens with other headphones too not just the supplied ones.
I've reset the device with factory settings but no joy.
Was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?
Orange have agreed to exchange the device but only when they have new devices in stock later on in the week.
was wondering if a firmware re-install might fix it but not sure how to do it and if would be a waste of time if it's a hardware issue.
thanks for your help!

That sounds like a hardware issue and something that you can do nothing about via firmware ...

I have exactly the same problem, got my Hero yesterday and haven't been able to get the headphone jack to work at all. Everything just keeps coming out of the speakers regardless of what I plug in there! I'm going to have to go and have a word with Orange, methinks...

Got mine yesterday and have not had time to check the headphone jack yet. Still in the cooling off period. If it's no good i.e not fit for purpose, it'll be going back

Think this is a headphone problem as I went into t-mob shop and plugged another pair in and it worked fine. Went home and tried the headphones I got with the Hero and everything works now...weird

can anyone confirm whether this is a hardware of software issue or of there is a fix? i have this problem on my handset and i have tried rebooting and doing a hard reset but neither has solved the problem.

I've had my Hero for a day now, and I haven't encountered this issue.
There might be two separate problems:
1) The Hero isn't detecting any more whether headphones are plugged in or not because the background application that is responsible for this is no longer responding - I'm pretty sure that a hard reset would have fixed that.
2) The Hero can't detect that headphones are being plugged in, because the detection mechanism inside the phone is bust ...

Hi
The same problem here in France: I got mine last week and when I plugged my headphone this morning nothing happens.
I tried a hard reset, plenty of differents headphones but same issue
I found a small workaround to manualy active or desactivate the jack output :
toggleheadset - Project Hosting on Google Code
Sounds like a hardware issue to me

I emailed HTC support last night about the aforementioned problem and here is the reply...
Quote:
Dear Sir,
You are the first person to bring this case to my attention, and so have to deal with the problem as an issue specific to your device. Until more people contact us and report this as a problem, we have to deal with each case as it arises.
Do you know if this is a system wide issue? Does this affect all sound in the phone, or is it restricted to just media player audio? I notice on the link you provided, someone has already done a hard reset. Have you tried this step yet? I would normally suggest leaving a hard reset as a last resort, but I can not see many other options available.
If you hear of anyone else experiencing this issue, please do urge them to contact us.
Best Regards,

I had a similiar problem with my Samsung YPP2, it was incredibly annoying. You had to move the jack in one direction so that it made contact with something inside the plug, don't remember exactly what it was. Have you tried doing this? I sellotaped mine to tug in that direction until I got a replacement, so maybe this would be useful as a temporary solution, i'd still send it back, of course.
Stupendo, I imagine so. Just phone that then try and follow in the general direction of 'phone issues' or something to that effect. You might be able to get through to customer services, too.

I noticed that not only the jack was broken but also the backlight of the buttons, the trackball does not flash anymore (notifications) and the LED does not light when charging.
Does someone have also all these issues?

Hi,
Were you using the supplied h/phone/mike/answer cable or just stand alone h/phone cables, if it's just h/phone cable try inserting the origional a few times [gently].
Max.

I have exactly the same issue. White HTC on T-Mobile UK. Worked fine for about a week, then....
Headset doesn't work, handset doesn't detect anything plugged in (no icon) and therefore plays music through speakers.
LED by earpiece never lights up anymore, even when USB connected and charging.
Buttons and Trackball are no longer backlit.
I've booked this into HTC to have repaired, a courier's picking it up tomorrow.

I've experienced a slight problem before but I found that I would have to push the jack in firmly because of the silicon case which I'm using and the way it has been slanted... but other than that it could be a hardware issue as others have mentioned.

I got what I guess was an automated response from HTC telling me that if another pair of headphones doesn't work, I need to send the phone back fro repair.
The copy and paste support monkey totally ignored the bit of my message where I explained that the headsets worked just fine with ToggleHeadset, so a "repair" wasn't necessary.

I just loaded up some songs and tried using headphones to listen to music but it kept going through to the speakers, so here is how I fixed my problem:
1. Turned phone off then turned it back on
2. Put the headphone jack all the way in, but this didnt work
3. Slowly remove the headphone jack out, but not all the way. The music started to come through the headphones instead of the speaker now.
4. Push the headphone jack all the way back in.
Hopefully this works for you guys

You most definately can do something, it takes a few minutes to fix, here you go:
My headset suddenly stopped working, was about to get the handset replaced when I found a way of repairing this myself.. seems its simply a software fault which should get fixed in the next firmware update, until this happens this is how you fix it:
first enable installation of non market place apps by going into settings > applications > and then ticking Unknown Sources
then.. open your web browser on your phone and type in the following:
http://code.google.com/p/toggleheadset/
you will then see a link to download the ToggleHeadset widget
once downloaded and installed add a new widget to your home screen, select Android Widget and then select Headet Toggle Widget
you will then have a button on your home screen to turn the headset on and off
This has now fixed the headset not working for me.. I imagine it will work for everyone else
enjoy =)

Thanks for the tip about the ToggleHeadset widget. Like others, I've suddenly suffered from my Hero failing to recognise I've plugged headphones in - and this widget has fixed the problem.

I have an application to close ongoing programs installed on my HTC Hero. My guess is that this app killed the process needed to detect the headset. A simple restart got the headset to start working again. Hope this helps

I have the same problem. Headphone socket worked for 5 days then broke.
The sound plays from the speaker but will not switch over the headphones. Also the notification light, function button lights and track ball light do not come on.
I tried a hard reset and it didn't work.
Does anybody know if this is an issue to be fixed by my network or HTC.. i.e. will Tmobile replace the phone for me, im not keen on losing my new phone for a few weeks while its being repaired.
I have sent an email to HTC .. not sure if it was to the correct department I used the general contact form - can someone point me in the correct direction.
There was a new ROM update released a few days ago - does anybody know if this fixes the problem?

Little update:
I got on the phone to Tmobile and since I was in my 7 day grace period they are going to replace the phone no questions asked. Has to be done via a courier through a direct swap.. i.e. he/she brings me a new phone and I hand over my old one.

Anecdotal evidence from other forums is that this is a software related issue - lights not working and headphone not being detected. The new ROM may solve this problem. Rebooting the device will also in most cases solve the issue - some people have mentioned taking out the battery and putting it back in after powering down the phone, to ensure that the circuits are really powered down. I haven't experienced the problem personally so I can't really comment.

SAME ISSUE- No Headset, No LED flashing!
Guys,
I bought unlocked HTC HERO in USA. After a month, the headset was not working, also trackball LED didn't work while charging. As, ToggleHeadset Widget makes your headset work and the LED flashes other times. THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE AT ALL. I think there should a better way to correct the phone as it was.
Does Hardware Reset Works?
Does updating ROM Works?
Please let me know!
I also tried to contact HTC, here's my case:
As, it was still under manufacturing warranty, I thought of contacting HTC. They asked me to ship it to Texas. That's $20 approx. Then, there is roughly $40 in fees. Return shipping cost is also charged to me, that is, another $20. Total cost of: $80 . Also, living without the phone for about a month So that was not acceptable!
I hope either hardware reset or ROM update will solve the issue permanently.
I love my phone, I can't see it not working!

But I ve find a solution : restart your Hero with the headset pluged.
In this way, my hero recognize the heaset and everything work as well.

I can reproduce this if I do this: turn the sound all the way off to zero, then plug in the headphone. Now turn the sound back on -- the headset isn't detected and the sound keeps coming from the speaker. Even if you unplug and plug the headphone back in, it won't work now.

Not had this problem myself but have read of this problem on another forum when deciding to buy the phone.
There appears to be a tiny microswitch in the headphone socket that detects if headphones are inserted - the answer which worked for about 90% of people was to repeatidly (and gently) insert and remove the headphone plug a few times - it seemed like the microswitch was getting stuck and this losened the switch up so it was working normally again.
Hope this is the cause of you guys problems and that this possible fix works for you.

Just received a phone at Christmas and now have the same issue.
At the moment the solution of turning the phone off, inserting the headphones and restarting seems to solve the problem.
Fingers crossed that's it as I can live with that; albeit slightly miffed after forking out £300+..........other than that I love it & money well spent
