To all you brave Hero owners who imported the phone to use on T-Mobile USA's EDGE network...could you please tell us here on the forum how things are working out for you?
How fast is the internet browsing/weather app loading/facebooking etc??

Everything is slow on Edge ... I have used a SE 990i on Edge for a couple years and it Slow ... of course better than GPRS ... the speed of Edge is a function of the Carrier Network and not much at all the platform you have connected to it...
Thanks for the info Justjimjpc. I'm gonna probably end up switching to sprint then.
Its not slow for me for a couple of reasons. 1) I come from Blackberry Curve that did NOT have 3G so used only Edge. 2)I do not use my cell phones for browsing the web.
I have found facebook(non-browser) updates on the Hero fast. The weather updates are pretty fast, too.

Having never used 3G, and being used to Edge does not mean its not slow. It just means you dont know the difference.
Perhaps you could do a speed test and post the results since you a currently running a Hero on Edge? I think that would supply the OP with the best information, if we can get someone to post results from 3G speeds as a comparison.

here here. That's a great idea Edaze...if we can get people to post their speeds that'd be great. But even better for me is to hear peoples first hand experiences with the phone on EDGE.

Not to steal the thread, but I've been thinking about getting the Hero for AT&T. I live in the San Francisco area, so I figure since the network speeds are already being bottlenecked, EDGE wont be all that much slower.
I considered switching to Sprint, but their coverage sucks over here, plus it would be $70/month as opposed to $15/month on AT&T (my work lets me add data at my own cost and pays for the rest). As things stand right now, it doesn't look like AT&T will be getting a decent android device any time soon (I'm betting sometime next summer).
So what do you all think? Is it worth it to grab a Hero if I can get a decent deal on one? Also, where's the best place to get a decent deal on one, lol.

i think in your case, you should stick to att and deal with slow speeds. Mainly because your work pays for your bill. That's so worth it. In my case, I think it'll be way easier and more convenient (and a bit safer) just to switch to sprint. If you do end up getting the gsm hero on EDGE, let us know how it works! Thanks!

I'm pretty well set on getting the Hero. The only issue is finding a good deal. I've got a couple leads though, and I'll know if they pan out in the next couple of days. I just can't justify paying more than $400 on a phone right now.
Once I get it though, I'll make sure to post speed tests and all of my thoughts
I had to pay the "early adopter"-tax (I submitted my purchase order on July 1st; the phone got to be in stock at merchant's store in July 31, and it got to my hands the very next day, Aug. 1st).
I paid the equivalent of US$620, including that superfast courier shipping from the UK.
The luxury of being impatient does have cost (a high one). Now, the phone retails for $580 with the same merchant (and most likely, soon it will be less than that). Granted, it's been more than a month since I got mine.
On the other hand, the device is really worth the price.

I don't think the Edge network is incredibly slow - particularly for retrieving information intended for the mobile network (mobile news sites with limited graphics can download in 10 to 15 seconds usually). I believe, that in any case, the 3G network is already being strained by the iPhone and the number of things it does over the 3G network so everything is slowed down somewhat until more capacity is added (for AT&T at least).
Typically, I'm in areas where there is WiFi (for work and home) and that supports the standard heavy browsing you "might" do - although for a cell phone I don't do too much heavy stuff in either WiFi location. Typically, for gmail, calendar, weather, stocks, Twitter and Facebook (updates every 4 hours), and maybe browse mobile news sites, I squeeze out maybe 12 MB over a week over the Edge network - assuming no-one sends me a document to read while I am out and about.

@Missyummy Yes, you can insert the SIM card from your current T-mobile phone into the Hero from the website you posted and it will work just fine (assuming you have a data plan). The thing is that although I agree this white imported Hero is much more gorgeous than the one with Sprint, the imported device won't work with 3G because it only has the European 3G band, so it will fall back to Edge (2G) which is slower.
I don't have data in my T-mobile plan, I just use my Hero with Wi-fi.... and yes, I'm writing this from that very same Hero you're talking about. :-)

i have data in my tmobile plan. i currently have a G1 so now i want to upgrade to hero =)

Try and grab a Telus Hero from Canada and unlock it, It's got 3G bands that are compatible with AT&T, not sure where you can buy one but I know that there are some websites that sell them.
