Default ChompSMS and Messages problem

i installed chompSMS and i really like it, the problem is that when i receive a text message both the original message app and chompSMS both get the message and then i get two alerts in the top bar... my questions are:

1. can i uninstall messages app so there is no conflict between the two?

2. if necessary can i reinstall the messages app in the future from the marketplace?

thanks in advance for all your help
and long live android

I think you have to go into the Messenger settings and disable the notification and that should do it.

Many apps use the alerts and most of them tell you that SMS alerts all need to turned off. I use SMS Popup, ChompSMS and one other I can't recall, ringo lite I think.

It is important as there is some reason the api won't let the dev control this setting.

I think android took the rights of a 3rd part app from secretly changing settings ... so you must either manually change a setting or the program must prompt and ask permission to change the setting ...

This is some protection from an app secretly changing you system settings ...

That makes perfect sense. It gets a bit nuts and many exper'd devs mention it over and over in their apps with SMS. The conflict in this messaging type seems higher, so the multiple warnings are important, and it takes a bit of wrangling to get the right app to provide the notification.

Why are people using Chomp over the HTC SMS application?

I understand on the G1 because Chomp gave the G1 touchscreen texting, but on the Hero what are the advantages please?

Interesting to note here might be a difference between hero and dream/g1/magic/mytouch. For my G1 ChompSMS uses the contact pictures stored with the contact in my Google Address Book.

A question for those using this on HTC Hero, does the trackball show up when you receive a mail?

I can see you can change the colour of the trackball in the CHOMPsms settings but each colour I chose has the same result: No lighting up of the trackball.

I saw that you can change the color of the led light, but I did not see a setting for chaging the trackball color. That said, I can not successfully change the color of my led as chomp has that option under the application settings. I can only get a green led to light up (very similar to the stock HTC messaging app). Yes I have turned off the stock messaging notifications already. BTW, I'm using a sprint HTC hero.

I have a Sprint Hero. I like the default sms widget just fine except for the alert tone. I have an ap called Ringdroid that worked real well to make and install ringtones and message tones. The ones I created are in the folder and selected but the phone still uses one of the preinstalled ones. I tried chompsms, nice ap, uses the tone I had selected but I can't find a setting to turn off the default widget. I don't care which one I use but only want one on and my own tone asigned. Any sugestions either way.

The Hero default keyboard has a sign itself: press the '12#' button, then press the '1/2' button, the sign is on that page (I prefer the 'Better Keyboard' app myself)

Apologise if this isn't what you were referring too.

Yeah, sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant a on the keyboard so that you don't have to go through all of that. A UK Keyboard...

I think I may have fixed my own problem. When I selected a contact from my contacts to send a text the phone asked which of the 2 messaging programs to use and let me select one as default. I haven't recieved a text back yet to test but hope this is it.

Nope it didn't fix it. I still get 2 notifications. I can't seem to find the off button on the default sms program.

Angry Still Getting 2 Notifications... Done all suggested Here

Ok, so i've installed Chomp and i love it over the stock SMS on the Hero (or T-Mobile G2 Touch here in England).
However... I've done everything suggested here to stop the stock notification but i'm still getting 2.
I've unchecked recieve notifications in the stock Message program using the menu settings (in the message program itself).
Still getting the green chomp notification that opens chomp and the white default new message notification that will take me to the stock messaging application.
Yes, i know i've ticked all the right boxes and yes, i've removed the default widget from my home screen.
I've looked in TaskPanel and it shows chomp running and no sign of the stock SMS application yet still 2 bloody notifications !! GRRRRR
Right now i'm wondering if deleting the Messages (8.00KB) and Messages Widget (0.00B) from the manage applications screen will help ?

Haha, it's almost funny !
The Chomp notification starts 1st, then the stock notification kicks in telling me i have 0 unread messages and using a notification tone that is not assigned to any application.

I fear a factory re-set is my only option here.

Default Chompsms making default

So I am having a problem making chompsms as my default messaging. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. The only problem I am having with it is that the original messaging system is still showing that I have unread messages on my screen before I unlock my phone. How do I get that to go away. Someone please help me!

Just go into the default SMS app, hit the menu button, then settings and untick the box for notifications.

So the notification is reappearing when you switch the screen off and on again?

Have you tried rebooting since turning off notifications?

Just a guess, but make sure you go into the settings for your original messaging app and disable all of the notifications there. If you don't, you'll be notified of new messages, even once you've read them in ChompSMS. The same advice applies to any and all third party SMS apps
