Getting the Inspire and returning it for an Atrix later?
I remember reading in one of the Atrix forum that somebody was considering doing this since the Atrix's rumored release date is March 6th and well within the 30 day return date. But I was wondering would I face a big problem doing so...for one im planning to do an early upgrade for the Inspire. Are there additional charges or restocking fees that apply?

Depending on the store there may be restock fee. Your biggest problem is your not gonna wanna return the inspire there are a few that were thinking as you and now there not so sure
Why do an early upgrade? The early upgrade has a termination fee....and it's not cheap...I'm pretty sure there's no restocking fee if returned within the first 30 days.

From what I understand and from talking to AT&T customer service is that you can do an early upgrade for your current line (as long as it is after the 1st month of your contract) and pay $200 on top of the new contract price ($99+$200=$299 in this case) which is still an awesome deal IMHO WITHOUT a termination fee. Granted I have never done this but just what I have heard when I tried to do it for my GF a couple of months back but decided against it.
Has anyone done this or know for a fact this is doable?
Im just scared that the restocking fee and a activation fee would actually make things more expensive for me.
PLUS this sucker might talk me out of getting the more expensive Atrix
I was originally planning to get the Atrix after watching the promo video upon first hearing about it.......until the whole pricing FAIL came out. This would of been such a great device to have with the right data plan (unlimited & no tethering plan needed to use any dock) but what are you gonna do. I figure once ATT drops the price and maybe loosens their stance on what they consider "tethering" with the Atrix, it'll be a hit.
Yeah it's what, like a $45 plan? I saw that and I was like seriously, who's going to pay that? And what's the difference between using data on the phone and using data by tethering? it's the same amount of data so why do you pay more? It doesn't make sense to me...:þ
Well I don't think it's that bad, but the problem I see is, what's the point of buying a laptop dock and the phone, when you can get a netbook/laptop with way better internals? I mean, the only people who would buy the dock would be business people, but most business people probably already have a laptop....
I planned on doing exactly that, getting the Inspire today and then getting the Atrix on the 6th.
So today I got the Inspire at Costco for $79 and I am really liking this phone so far. Of course coming from the lag riddled Captivate makes all the difference in the world.
This phone is fast, has a great screen and I love the feel of it. I may have to keep this and forgo the Atrix.
I was gonna get the inspire and exchange it in a month, but now I have decided to keep it, no Atrix for me, Im very happy w/ the inspire 4G...However since I got it from Costco, I have 90 days to exchange if I choose too, but I wont.. Oh and no restocking fee's..I will get my phones from Costco from here on out...
don't buy something just to return it. thats why there are restocking fees.
The thing is I usually don't do that. I would rather buy the phone off contract and when someting new comes out craigslist will be my best friend. But i'm on my BB bold 9700 and this wait to go back onto android is killing me because I've have might sights on the Atrix since it was first rumored/introduced...but i guess im a sucker for the newest and flashiest phones...
however the more i read reviews on the forums here the more im excited to pick one up tomorrow and might just hold off on the atrix til later down the line...
The more I looked into both phones, I felt the Inspire just had a more polished look (sense). The atrix looked like boring in the videos i saw. Plus for what you are paying, you would never run on all cylinders with that phone unless you use the docks.
I spend $240.00 a month on a phone bill, so if I want to try somthing out first and dont like it, I have no problems returning it for somthing better..Granted I have never done it before, but I had all the intentions of doing it this time..But once again Im not going to because the Inspire is the phone for me at this time...Also it seems AT&T are about the only ones that charge a restocking fee..
I think I am an HTC fanboy for the foreseeable future. I don't think I could trade Sense for Blur, no matter the hardware specs. HTC will start pumping out the high quality dual cores soon enough. until then, Inspire will suit me just fine =)

Guilty as charged. That was me who had the "buy Inspire now and upgrade for Atrix later" thread in the Atrix Forum. Upon further thought I'm not so sure if I'll switch over to the Atrix. Of course I'll have to play with it first and see if the positives greatly outweigh the negatives but it's going to be hard to topple this phone. Everything is just so doggone smooth and I've always been a staunch HTC supporter first & foremost. Time will tell though
p.s. There's no restocking fee within the 30 days.

I was going to do this but I changed my mind. I'm keeping the Inspire and if HTC comes out with a dual core phone for AT&T later this year I'll get that instead of the Atrix. By then I think Android and the apps will be better equipped to take advantage of dual core processors.

I agree.
When someone does this it impacts everyone, since you truly are abusing the system. Far too many people scam the carriers, then wonder why the price of service is high.
Sad that so many people are looking to abuse "the system" like this. You cant wait three weeks for the Atrix? Really?
[/soapbox]
I straight up asked at&t when I bought inspire if I could do this and they said sure, so I don't see how it is abusing the system. I will say if I like this phone and the atrix I may keep both. I am freaking awful. Especially since I am getting pre-ordering xoom on Thursday.

Just because something is allowed doesn't mean it's meant to be used like that...If you know you're going to return it, that's abusing the system. If you're not sure yet, then I guess that wouldn't be abusing it...:þ
Well like I said I did pick up the inspire and like many people here have stated I might have to rethink about getting the Atrix. This is a solid freaking phone even if it is running "last year's tech". I think the atrix will really have to blow me away for me to pick one up. Plus the fact that so many phones Are slated to come out in march.

I do not think trying a phone for 30 days and then returning it if you do not like it is abusing the system. I came right out to the AT&T rep and said I just bought the Inspire but I am thinking about the Atrix. His exact words were- that's why you have a 30 return policy. If you try it and want another phone, by all means, get the other phone.
All they do is re-sell returned phones as a refurb. They lose money on these phones either way and make it up your first 6 months of your monthly fee, after that it is all gravy to them. They have no problem with people doing this and fully expect it.
That being said, I am seriously considering cancelling my Atrix pre-order and sticking with the Inspire. The Inspire is just one hell of a phone that I am really enjoying. And for $79 it has blown away any other phone (and I have had a lot of them) that have cost me more than double that in the past.
The Inspire is polished, fast, feels good in your hands, has a solid feel to it, is rock solid from a software standpoint (at least so far), has very good battery life (compared to my Captivate), and I am a HTC fan to boot. I have never owned a Motorola phone, so I cannot compare, but there are so many Motoblur haters out there that it makes me wonder if I will hate too. My one big complaint about the Inspire is the speakerphone, it is possibly one of the worst speakerphones I have come across in some time. I may have a lemon, but this thing is not nearly loud enough and is very very, tinny - and dont mean that in a good way. It is basically unusable for me, and I use my speakerphone a lot for confernce calls for work. I could always use my bluetooth, but having a earpiece in my ear for an hour or more at a time gets annoying to me.
I am still going to check out the Atrix at the store if I do cancel, but unless it blows me away, the Inspire may be the phone I use for the next 12 months or so.
The HTC Inspire 4G was released as the first phone to run on AT&T's 4G HSPA+ network. The device features a large, 4.3-inch display, 8MP camera capable of 720p HD video capture, and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The name of the game here is ... Read More
