Besides the volume issues, I dont see Volume + in the market, my only real problem is the occasionally keyboard deadspots.

If you go to the url shown in Post#34 of this thread, there is a download site listed in that url - http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/volume-gingerbread/download - and it's a valid link. I myself have not seen it on the market, but other people have mentioned it being there, so I'd guess it really is.

First a little advice on the battery door problem. I let the AT&T rep open mine because I heard the first time is the hardest. He showed me the slot on the left side of the door and said put one thumb nail in the slot and twist a little until you can get your second thumb nail under the spot that opens up above the volume rocker. Then just pop it open with both thumbs. If you only try to open it from one side it is likely you will break it. After the first time, it is easy to open. I bought a second battery to alleviate the battery problem.

My only real issue is with apps. They all want to start when you boot up. Android/HTC needs some kind of start up manager like MSConfig on the PC. Most apps don't quit even if you kill them. They keep coming back like zombies. But, if there was more memory on the phone, it wouldn't be as big of a deal.

I like Sense, but I'm going to root (as soon as I get the nerve) to see what else is out there.

Oh, and honestly I would prefer a 5" screen!! This still seems small...until I use my wife's Captivate, which is just tiny to me now. My old iPhone 3G is just miserable.

Nothing to be sorry about! You use a file manager like Astro or Root Explorer to install it. Open up the file manager and go to wherever the apk is located on your SD card, click on the apk and the file manager will ask you if you want to install it - click yes, install the apk. After it's done installing, the program will appear as an item in your app drawer. Just open it up and click on "Speaker Modifications" first, then on "Boost Speaker Volume", then on "Volume Level". I wouldn't go above the setting "Med/High" until you've tested it out - you don't want to damage your speakers. The other settings present are for fine tuning your sound.

Good luck!

The Inspire has plenty of RAM to handle it. Only a few devices out have more than the Inspire. And there is a way to manage startups - Autostarts. Works very well, but requires root. It's well worth the buck though.

Default I LOVE My Inspire....But I Found A Few Bugs

Recently switched from BlackBerry Torch to Android. My 1st Android device was the Atrix, which I did not enjoy, and which had some SERIOUS bugs in its firmware.

The HTC Inspire is awesome, but not 100% bug free. So here is what I found so far:

1. Voice Dialer application ALWAYS crashes. I don't know if this is an HTC app or a stock Android app, but whenever I open it, the phone beeps, and then it gives me the message "Please Try Again. You Can Also Try Restarting Your Phone". Of course neither of these options makes the application work. Anyone else experience this? Any known solutions?

2. There is a weird quirk in the way contact names for some companies are displayed in the contact directory. I have several contacts in MS Outlook that don't include first or last names, because they are the information for an entire company. An example would be Targus, Inc.. I have my contacts list on the Inspire set to display by First Name. I have observed that for any company-only name that is a single word, the Inspire lists it as Inc COMPANY. So for example, Targus, Inc. is displayed as "Inc Targus" and shows up under "I" in my list instead of under "T" which is where any reasonable person would go looking for it. The WEIRD thing is that this DOES NOT happen for companies that have 2 or more words in their name. So for example MNS Engineers, Inc. a civil engineering firm I work with shows up correctly on the Android as "MNS Engineers Inc", but Huitt-Zollars, Inc. another civil engineering firm I do a bunch of work with shows up on the Android as "Inc Huitt-Zollars" because the software sees the hyphenated name as a single word. Yes you can work around this by deleting "Inc." from the names of single-word-name companies, but you shouldn't have to do that. This is a BUG and should be fixed.

That's it for now.

I LOVE HTC "Sense". Beautiful to look at, intuitive to use, etc. One of my favorite things about this phone. I briefly used a Motorola Atrix prior to switching to the inspire, and the experience on the Atrix was not nearly as good. Feels almost like a beta OS to me, whereas "sense" feels fully mature and exceptionally well designed. So good in fact that I might not even consider a non HTC handset for my future Inspire replacement as "Sense" is going to be a foundational requirement for me going forward.

Try using your PC browser and download it to your PC desktop. Then use a USB connection to your phone to manually move it to the root of your SD card - so it's sitting naked on the SD card, and not in a folder. THEN use the file manager to install it.

The sync issue can be resolved by setting apps that need to sync to manual refresh so they won't do it automatically. The same can be done for widgets so they only refresh when you tap the refresh tab/button.

As for the data cable maybe it got damaged or the connector Ben I don know. What is happening when you hook it up to the computer? Does the computer recognize the phone as being connected? And are you choosing hard disk as the usb connection type? Is usb debugging turned on/off?

Mine's doing this too when I plug in to the aux in on my truck.

I listen maybe an hour a day plugged in like that and it skips songs and starts voice dialer, calls people maybe once or twice a week. It's never happened to me with headphones but I probably only ever plug in headphones to it once a week for less than an hour.

I started to think it was a problem with subsonic the music app I'm using but now I'm thinking something else...

I found out the headphone jack is more than just a 3 conductor headphone jack it's a 4 conductor headset jack. Supports headsets with music control buttons and a button you can open voice dialer with.

I'm guessing it's supposed to be backward compatible with 3 conductor headphone plugs but maybe something is off about it or off about the aux cable I'm using and there's random short circuiting going on there simulating button presses on a headset. I'm going to try another cable and if I still have problems I'm going to buy one of these:

seidioonline.com

I guess this will give the phone the 4 conductors it wants and I'll plug my aux cable into this adapter.

Anyone else have any other suggestions? I really enjoy having a phone for the 1st time with a real universal 3.5mm headphone jack that doesn't need an adapter like all my old phones did but here I am talking about buying an adapter.

I am having absolutely the same issues. However, I think it's my headphones. They're cheapies... I'm gonna go look for my good ones and see if this makes a difference. If not, I'll be spending eternity on the phone with AT&T

There is a case with a built in battery. It's listed in the accessories section of this forum.

Yeah the ringtones aren't that loud but a lot of people are using the zedge app for louder tones. As for sending videos what quality do you have it to record at? It really has to be mms quality to send thru text anything higher is probably going to have to be sent thru email. I have no problems with videos from iphone users but i have read other people do have issues. Have you tried another video player app? I think it's called rockplayer. It plays all kinds of video formats and i use it over my stock video app even though I can play videos fine thru it.

Use Best Vplayer Pro. It's the ONLY video player that will play .MOV files (iPhone video format) smoothly.

Post Force closing apps

When I first turn on my HTC INSPIRE, i am prompted to force close certain apps/background programs, or skip force closing. Is this normal? Is there a way to avoid this? Should I force close?

Does this happen everytime you turn the phone on? What apps or programs are force closing? Is it the same ones all the time?

It's not normal for this to happen everytime you turn your phone on.

Sounds like an app you downloaded is messing with the phone. HTC sense should not be force closing everytime the phone is turned on. I'm not 100% but i want to say maybe android booster cause it has been built in task killer and maybe it's trying to kill things it shouldn't. You don't need a task killer anyway. Maybe try uninstalling that app and see if that helps. Could be another app but it's a place to start

Yeah there was actually a long thread on the topic.

Ah found it

http://androidforums.com/android-applications/335110-why-you-dont-need-task-killer.html

I haven't used a task killer since my backflip. The other 4-6 android phones I have had since then never bothered installing a task killer on. I do use watchdog lite to monitor my apps

Why you don't need a task killer

I haven't used a task killer since my backflip. The other 4-6 android phones I have had since then never bothered installing a task killer on. I do use watchdog lite to monitor my apps
thanks again. I uninstalled 2 ANDROID apps and reboot handset and i WAS NOT prompted.

I will go to the thread and check it out.

Sigh... the headphones issue was a game changer. But now, my inspire's live wall paper freezes half the time and sometimes the phone itself just stalls out.

P.s. is it normal for the battery to be half dead after a 10 min phone call?

No. Check to see what is using the battery. I'm not running stock sense anymore, so I can't tell you where to find it, but that is a good place to start diagnosing. ZD Box is a free app that I use that has that function if you can't find it in the settings.

To check what is using the battery I believe it's menu-settings-about phone-battery-what is using battery

Default problem glich or other

so there is a problem im having with my inspire what im being told is that dirt my have gotten into the charger and caused some damage so my inspire believes its on a car port all the time which is odd because ive never placed it on a car port... in car mode your inspire turns into a gps and is hands free so the speakerphone is always on...odd with this issue is that the ATT warranty doesnt cover this specific problem so it has to be sent to htc.. for up to 2 weeks.. n

Had the Inspire for a few months now. Its my first android and my first smartphone. My only gripes so far are:

When I'm trying to lock the screen, sometimes I accidently hit the volume button at the same time i hit the lock button. This makes the screen stay lit and doesn't time out unless I unlock it and relock the screen. This has caused my battery to die very quickly without me noticing.

Using camera pictures for wallpaper is terrible since it resizes them. I have even tried resizing the image to 960x800(searched and apparently this is the screen resolution), but the phone still zooms way in on the picture when its set as the wallpaper.

I have some other gripes, but I think rooting the phone would solve them. I just need to read up on it more, before I try it.

Unhappy complaints with Inspire

My Complaints with phone: does not go loud enough; screen is hard to use in daylight; and my biggest complaint is that it uses too much data with whatever is running in background. I always make sure I have it turned off when I am not using it; do not use syncing; I think I have "force stop" everything I know of. Not much help from ATT so I may have to switch back to aircard. I live in rural area; do not have WIFI and go to "Hotspot" to do any major downloading, updating etc. The only reason I bought this phone was the salesman told me I would get better and faster internet connection on my laptop with the Inspire as tethering connection than I did with my aircard. He assured me that I would not use any more data (4G plan) than I did with my aircard (5G plan). He was so wrong. I like the phone but cannot afford to go over my 4G data plan each month. I have had this phone for 5 months. If anyone has advice for me how to cut down on Inspire's background data usage, I would love it. I guess my next question is if I have to change to aircard, can I still use the ereader, camera, and music I have installed on my Inspire

I believe the resolution for the screen is 480x800 not 960. That could be your problem trying to set wallpaper.

I thought just my phone did this, but yesterday I got my inspire replaced since my volume buttons stopped working...well when I slide my homepage to the right and the favorites page comes up (with icos that say profile, bluetooth, wi-fi, and airplane) I cant add any contacts to my favorites. When I start typing in the name of someone to add, no one shows up. Does this happen to anyone else?

I am on my second brand new Inspire, replaced the Sim Card... first phone was worse at it holding on 1 bar.. this one varying with 2. I love the overall phone LOVE IT! But if they cannot figure out the call problem, ill have to get the IPhone 4 due to company calls. I'd try another new one. This one has til Friday to take work calls. If not its gone.

My issue is:

A few times a day, my phone displays a message that it "cannot read sim card" and only gives me the option of restarting, or shutting the phone down. I only realize this when my phone rings or I receive a notification. The signal bar will be full, and texts and calls still come thru, but unless I restart or shut down the phone, That message obstructs the rest of the screen and forces me to restart. Has anyone else had this issue? Sometimes (like today) it happens quite often. Other times, after the reset, it works fine. But it always resumes this foolishness by the end of the day.

Also, for some reason, my row of capacitive buttons on the bottom end all of a sudden stopped vibrating. I haven't changed any of the settings, nor have I seen any setting that I could use to change this back. I think its all a combo of hardware and software malfunctions. The restarts usually occurd during the day. The AT&T store nearest me pointed me in the direction of a warranty center, but it's not convenient for me to get to. Any suggestions?

I think HTC needs to work on the jack for the headsets. I'm on my second phone now and it's having to go back.

The first Inspire I could use the headset or the speakerphone, but couldn't use it as a regular handset mode - it was permanently muted in that mode.

Now the second phone I can only use the headset. Speakerphone is permanantly muted, and the regular handset is not only muted but sometimes the ear portion is off too.

Have you tried to new sim card? Att should give you one for free. As for the vibrate feature for those buttons. To check the settings for it, menu-settings-sound-scroll down is vibrate feedback checked?

I couldn't agree more. Absolutely love this overlay. Slick, gorgeous, and, imho, actually adds to the user experience. Unlike motoblur and touchwhiz, which, seems to me, to get in the way.

The only real complaint I have with the device is that enigma of a battery door . Although it has gotten a bit easier over time, the first couple of times I tried it, I thought I tore a ligament in my thumb.

A random blank screen keeps popping up whenever I unlock my phone. I checked the notification/recent bar and it appears to be the News app that comes pre-installed on the phone. It also keeps prompting me for Google sign-in saying my account has either been changed or my password is incorrect....neither are correct. Does anyone have any ideas?! I've tried taking my gmail account with school off and then adding it again. I've also 'force closed' the news app and then whenever I restart my phone it comes back. I wish I could uninstall the pre-loaded news app.....

:-(

I just switched from Blackberry Bold 9700 2 days ago...so these are first impressions:

- I think the Inspire has the best looking screen in terms of clarity of images - it's got great color/contrast and it is not as grainy looking as a lot of other Androids. I do consider the iPhone's screen to be the benchmark.
- My #1 dislike: Where is "bedside" mode when plugged in at night? Blackberry has the option to turn off all notifications while plugged in is great. I am sure this feature exists, but where?
- So far the call quality is great, but yes the speakerphone does kind of suck..in reality, how often do i use it? not much.
- I like there is some sort of indicator light.
- I don't love the sound/profile options. I'd like an easier time customizing vibrations/notifications for different types of events: Texts, Emails, Alarms, etc.

About a week ago my Inspire started freaking out, the screen turns on by itself sometimes. I'll unlock the phone and the unlock screen won't react to my touch forcing me to lock and unlock the screen again until it works.

Also quite a few times I'll unlock the phone and only the bottom 4 buttons will light up, the screen remains blank and won't turn on for a few seconds to even 10 seconds after I had unlocked it.

What's going on here?

I agree on the speakerphone. I use it a lot while driving.

Today I had a problem on my phone. I woke up and before shower I always read some sport news and facebook. Today I tried to access a spanish sports website (marca.com) and my phone froze completely. My capacitive buttons where not answering. Not even the lock button. I had to wait about five minutes and it went home and vibrated for 10 seconds, probably because I touched the home button several times during the "frozen mode". I killed all the apps with the app killer, I openned the browser again and tried with another website. It worked fine for a while, but when I tried to access back marca.com, it happened again. This time I had to pull off the battery.

This website contain a lot of flash content. Might the problem be on the website or on the phone? I haven't tried it again.

Having the exact same issue sometimes! I'll swipe down and I'll get a black screen, but the buttons will be lit up on the bottom. I've noticed this happens when I just received a text message and I try to unlock the phone immediately to read it.

It's getting worse for me, I'm not really sure if a factory reset would fix it either. Seems to be a firmware problem.
