Holy crap the battery life is amazing compared to before. As an experiment I didn't put it on the charger last night when i went to bed like normal.

At 26 hours unplugged I still have 36% left!
This is with wifi, sync, gps, autobright, and a weatherbug widget on.

Yesterday was a medium-use day, looks like I have 1.5hr display-on time and 12min voice calls. Took about 5 pictures and 3 videos. A bit of web browsing and playing a nes emu was part of that display time too.

When I went to bed it was 45% it only lost 2% in the 7 hours I slept! all the above stuff still turned on too.

7% loss since I woke up was all streaming music in the truck with subsonic.

Please answer does anyone know if the OTA or the new download on the htc site fixes the sms bug that was on the leaked version? Also can the people who got the leaked version still be able to get the OTA?

Default got it!

OTA finally happened for me in MN! I was checking 6 times a day it seemed like. I'll update when it's finished and I have time to experiment with it.

Mine updated this morning!

I was abit weirded out at first because I was expecting the update notice to say do you wanna update to 2.3.3 .... but instead it said 2.4 something or another... but obviously when all was said and done, it indeed shows 2.3.3 under software info.

Im not sure I'll see any better battery use like some of you have reported, as I already had pretty great battery use. I charge it just every other night. It has been lasting 39 hours, with low to medium use. With my luck, the update will ruin that... lol

I couldn't wait, so I downloaded it. Can't see a huge difference yet. The only thing I can even wimper about, is that i can't find the clock widget i had before, it was perfect, and the one I have is almost there, but the customization seems to be gone. Just my issue though. The new look is pretty neat and seems more streamlined.

I don't think thats anything that can be done on an htc build, I could be wrong. But if you're willing to root and flash some roms there are some available with sense 3 built in.

Does anybody know if the rooting process is exactly the same after the GB update or if it will even work after it?

I wouldn't think so. I wouldn't advise you to root at the moment.

Default GB features missing?

These are not a big deal, but I wonder if anyone else is missing these from their update. I saw some things in YouTube videos that I didn't notice on my phone after updating. I remember hearing of a "tv-off" like function when locking out the phone that was supposed to come with the GB update. My phone locks like normal...all the screen animations are allowed, so I dont know whats up with that. Also, I remember seeing phones with square-shaped icons for the apps, phone, and search buttons on the bottom of the home screens. However, mine are still the rounded-edge ones like before. It says 2.3.3 under my software, and I have the quick notifications function, as well as the scroll-page-to-page app tray...so I know that it did update. The file said it was supposed to be like 269 mb or whatever, but I noticed after downloading to my computer that the file was only 262...any ideas. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated, as I know nothing about android yet.

@29mike,
I noticed the same things after updating. I compared it to my Dad's un-updated Inspire, and there is a curve to the menu "button", and the App screen doesn't roll as smooth as before, it is broken up into segments. There is a difference with the Gingerbread. I did notice that the notification icons are different as well. Plus there is a new tab on the pull down menu.

What is it that determines when the OTA update becomes available for your phone? I still can't get mine. :'(

It's determined by how badly you want it and how often you post

about the only actual android visual difference I can think of that us the endusers would see on gingerbread vs. froyo is a new battery usage page. Plus on some phones the The TV off animation, I think it's part of gb, from google, but I've heard most oems take it out.

HTC themselves made some updates, the new app drawer, the quick settings etc. but whatever you saw in the videos that made an htc phone look different than yours was probably just a different launcher or possibly a different rom.

A launcher is what gives you homescreens and app drawer, like explorer.exe gives you your desktop and start menu on windows. Our phones have a launcher built by htc. Replace the launcher with something different like launcher pro or go launcher and you have a totally different looking phone for the most part.

It's pretty much random. HTC told me it can take up to 5 weeks for the update to be available for your device.

Default Update through PC

Just did the update on a friends Inspire, which wasn't getting the update OTA.
Worked just fine with HTC sync, took about 10 min, maybe less.

Did you install the new sync and put your phone in sync? I believe you gotta have debugging mode on.

Wife's Inspire now updated as of this morning.

From 2.2.2(?) --> 2.3.3

We'll see how many compliments/complaints I get from her throughout the day.

You can revert that back to the regular "scroll everything" mode if you want. Go to your app list: Menu >> List.

Got my update OTA today and I have to say that it makes me realize that I dont like Sense as much as I thought.

I like the Mail app and some of the random Sense goodies like flip-for-speaker, flip-for-silence and others. Quick settings is kind of redundant when they already have the toggle widget and it takes fewer steps to get to "all settings" if you just do it from the homescreen. The stock GB keyboard is way better than the HTC keyboard im (i make WAY fewer errors).

Most people have been talking about improvements in battery life so that is something that i will be looking forward to. But overall GB has not proven all that special to me.

i dont like that we missed out on some of the cool and even gimmicky stuff i was looking forward to with GB. Also, the new app drawer thing is greatly unintuitive and just plain annoying. I really wanted the whole "shutting off a tv screen" affect for locking and I really think we should have gotten Sense 3.0

i dont like that we missed out on some of the cool and even gimmicky stuff i was looking forward to with GB. Also, the new app drawer thing is greatly unintuitive and just plain annoying. I really wanted the whole "shutting off a tv screen" affect for locking and I really think we should have gotten Sense 3.0
If you don't like sense UI, try out launchers from the market. There are even copies of the original GB launcher, 3d drawer and everything.
I personally was looking forward to the update, side loading apps without having to clean any data or rooting, battery life is indeed a lot better, app drawer is in pages but flows much better, takes some getting used to of course, but its nothing from another world, quick settings in the notification bar, weather sound effect on unlock screen...
I have to agree with you about the keyboard, i make much more mistakes in the HTC's then on GB's. Even though they keys are huge on the 4.3in display, i feel I'm kind of cocky typing on it.
Overall I'm pleased with the update, could have implemented the awesome "TV off screen effect", could have the orange "end of page scroll effect" and some other original GB's effects, but i think HTC's design is pretty rad.
Our phone is supported by Cyanogenmod, I'm not flashing any ROMS in my device anytime soon, but I've used Cyanogenmod before, and its a heck of a ROM.

Mine just updated via OTA... Right now I'm running Swype but would like to try out the GB keyboard you guys seem to like. However, the only choices I see are "Swype" and "Touch Input." How do I activate the GB keyboard?

^^^ gingerbread keyboard doesn't come with gingerbread os on htc phones, install it from the market ^^^

you guys above who are using the gingerbread keyboard, does it seem like it slows down in typing in some apps a lot? esp after our gingerbread os update? I've used this kbd forever and I don't remember it doing that before.

specifically text boxes on a webpage, thats the one i can think of now, it's real slow to type in there where the htc kbd isnt.

It goes fast as normal in sms/gmail/others

Only problem I've had so far is with skins. I had mine set to slate, and most of it is the same. But the browser just looks like the default HTC skin, as well as the market. (Green instead of blue, among other things)
Anyone else having this issue?

Guys, if you care about battery life and uses the call feature, do not upgrade:

Issue 17383 - android - Dialer stuck in partial wakelock - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

IF you receive a call, the dialer will have a 97% battery usage and drains your device in half a day!!! The only lousy option is to restart your phone. I do not know of new solutions, but please vote for it to be resolved as it affects all version of 2.3.3. Ginger is spicy!!!

This is EXACTLY the same problem im having. I posted it about it earlier. My dialer usually sees 20% usage whenever the problem starts up. Sucks there is no permanent fix jus yet. We just gotta wait i guess.
