There is a connector in the battery door that turns off the phone if it is open.
If it isn't closed completely, you could be accidentally turning it off by the way you're holding it.
If that isn't it, it may be something to do with the battery itself.
You might be able to take it to an AT&T store and get them to let you try another battery to see if it still does it.
Those are the only physical things I can think of.
The reset should have taken care of any software issues.
