I need some clarity

I received the OTA update to 2.2, if I load a custom ROM (after rooting), is the original still on my phone? Would using the phones 'system software update' reset my phone to 2.2 stock?

Also, I'd like to know more exactingly what a 'gold card' is and what specifically it does.
