Default HTC Magic help

I have the htc magic and its been acting up as of late. It's been running super slow, taking over a minute or more to load the home screen after running apps at times. My most recent, and worst problem, is every time I get a text message and go to turn of the display, it won't light up but instead shows the android loading screen (the one when you turn the phone one.) Sometimes ill already have it on and when I click the text box in the messaging app to reply, it does the same thing.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? If not, I'm going to look into getting a new one or just switching to a phone with less hassle.

Thanks,

smduffy

@smduffy:

Is this a brand new phone, or refurbished? Have you had it for a while, or did you just get it recently?

It might be painful (with having to reinstall) but if you are having odd OS problems (on top of the speed) you might want to consider a factory reset first. I imagine that's what your carrier's tech support would suggest.

If the problems are being caused by an app that is installed, you can load your apps back on a few at a time and watch to see if the trouble starts again.

There are also Task/App killers you can try. Now this is a touchy subject. There are lots of threads in the forums where people argue about them. Some people swear by them (I am one) and others think the are the Devil's work. ;-)

In theory Android maintains all the memory for you, but I find that after a while my Magic can get down to about 30 or 40 MB of RAM, and I use a Task Killer app to get some of that memory back (I also like having control over what's running in the BG).

If after a factory reset, and checking for rogue/bad apps, and maybe trying a task killer, you are still having the problems, ask your carrier to exchange it (though you might be given a refurb).

My phone started acting that way when I had never deleted any of my texts. I called T-mobile and they told me that I should delete any threads that are more than 100 messages long. Also clear your call log if you haven't in a while. At that time I had one thread with about 2200 messages.

Try it, it made a huge difference for me in performance.

Also if you want to keep your texts you can download SMS Backup & Restore from the market to allow you to backup to your SD.

Long-press on a thread and delete on thread at a time. Start with one of the medium ones before you go to the longest one.

If worse comes to worse just do a factory reset.
