Question What is it?

I've had my Magic for about a month now, but still I haven't found out:
What is that thingy to the left of the earpiece? I know that the thing on the right side is an LED light, but the manual says nothing about the other side!

It's suppose to be a light sensor but I believe it is not functional and merely their for cosmetic purposes

it's not a light sensor, i checked. It's not a proximity sensor either, so maybe you were right, it's only there for the looks.
