Push email by itself shouldn't have a significant impact on battery life. What's leading you to believe that push email is the cause of your battery woes?
Agreed, that's not your battery problem, but, you still deserve to know you answer. Settings> Accounts & Sync> turn off the sync for your gmail. Once it's off, you can open your gmail app and hit refresh, and it will "manually" go get your mail for you.

If you rarely get email how would it kill your battery? Even regularly receiving a lot of email push doesn't kill my battery. Remember, coincidental != causal.

I have done that but it still collects emails as soon as I connect to wifi. This is driving me nuts!! I want to be able to click an icon and the phone picks up mail, at my request. HELP!
