Talking New Htc Magic User With A Few Questions Please

Hello

I have been reading this thread for a few days now alongside the vodafone one.
I have had my phone for almost 2 weeks now and think it is really great, although one or two things annoy me especially trying to get used to the keyboard.

I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me with a few issues please.

1. I am not very techy and dont really understand a lot of the jargon used but would like to know the difference between 3g and wi fi and how do I know what I am using.

2. How do yo know how much memory your phone has and if you can add any more. I am frightened that all the photos, applications, videos, contacts etc etc that I will use too much memory.

3. How do yo delete shortcts that you have placed on your extra home screen.

4. How does this gprs thing work is that like having a sat nav?

5. How do yo get your hotmail to be sent to your phone I cant seem to work it out without have to just go to google type in msn hotmail then sign in that way.

6. My bluetooth doesnt work.

Sorry for all the questions but I would love to have answers to these and hope someone can help me please.

Kind Regards
MRS T

The Magic is ace - I love mine.

Here you go:

1 -
WiFi = Wireless Network. e.g. home wireless broadband. O2 cloud hotspot, etc
3G = 3rd Generation mobile network, it's fast than 2G (that's 2nd Gen). It will only say 3G if a) you have 3G turned on and b) there is a 3G signal where you are.

If your WiFi is on and connected, there will be a symbol that looks like radio signal in the notification bar.

If you're connected to 3G - it will actually say 3G in the notification bar.

2 - Under settings, you can check how much memory you have, but it's far easier to download a free app or widget from the Market so you can see it in a way you like and understand. Photos, Videos, and music is automatically stored to the SD Card, so don't worry about those taking over the phone memory.

3 -
Press and hold the shortcut. You'll feel a vibration (don't let go!) The drawer will turn into a red trash can. Drag it to there. This WON'T delete the app - it's just a shortcut.

4 -
I assume you mean GPS (GPRS is high speed mobile network). The true GPS is accurate if it can see sky. Mobile location uses mobile masts to triangulate an area you are in.

To use GPS for SatNav you need to download a SatNav App. What to see GPS work? Head outside, go to Maps, then menu > My location and what it zoom in!

5 -
There is an Email App that isn't GMail or browser - I've not set it up as I'm a Gmail user. SORRY

6 - Bluetooth does work..... but it's only stereo bluetooth. You can transfer files between devices like on normal mobiles!

A good app to download that will help with ALL of these and make life easier for you is 'Toggle Settings'

Let me know if that helps.

I have been playing about with my phone alot today. Still learning so much.
Have spent a lot of time updating my phone book and opening new gmail account.

Still cant sending pictures or music via bluetooth. The b shows at the top of the screen but when you go to a pic and press share it only gives you option messaging, picasa and google mail ??

A good app to download that will help with ALL of these and make life easier for you is 'Toggle Settings'
Done

Let me know if that helps.

You can't send files via Bluetooth with the magic. Its only for use with Bluetooth handsets. Bit of a bummer..

Jennifer, not sure if you are still reading this thread, but you can try this for getting your Hotmail.

Open the Mail app on your phone (Not Gmail) and create a new account for Hotmail. Use the settings below. Can't guarantee they will work (I had some trouble) but they are supposed to be the settings.

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Hiya

Yes im still here. I tried your instructions you posted and voila they worked.

Have to thank you so much as I do rather like my hotmail address and would like to keep it although I like how gmail updates all your contacts automatically with your phone now so I cannot decide what to do now.

Thanks once again

Jennifer

Actually, it's not a problem. Just make sure the contacts in your Hotmail account are the same as in your Gmail account. When the contacts on your phone sync with Gmail, it will include all contacts there.

So, for example, if you have some contacts that are in Hotmail that aren't in Gmail, add them to Gmail online using your computer, and the next time you sync your Gmail and contacts, they will be synced with the contacts on your phone.

When you go into the Mail app on your phone, choose your Hotmail account, press on the TO field and start typing a contact's name. You should then see their email address in a drop down list so you can select it.

Theres a bit of bluetooth software called bluex which enable you to send and receive stuff via bluetooth. Think you have to pay for it though

hi im new to the forum and ive only had my htc magic for just over a week.

i would also like to setup my hotmail account to notify me when i recieve e-mails and use it like the googlemail account on my phone.

is it right that i have to set up a new hotmail account with the settings previously stated or can i change the settings on my current hotmail account for this to work?

also, i dont seem to have a "mail app" which isnt googlemail, do i use the browser?

if i manage to set up hotmail on my phone will i be able to have a shortcut to it like the googlemail is on the phone?

any help appreciated.

thanks

You can use the free app "Bluetooth File Exchange" to send/receive files through BT. Doesn't seem to work with Macs, though.
