Cult of Android - Meet the HTC One M8 Prime's massive UltraPixel camera | Cult of Android

"One of its improvements is said to be a new UltraPixel camera with a 16 megapixels sensor, and the leaked image below gives us a peek at what that massive sensor’s going to look like."

"The image above, published by reliable leaker @Evleaks, indicates the M8 Prime’s UltraPixel sensor will be significantly bigger than the regular M8′s sensor. It’ll protrude out of the back of the device with a bulbous lens, and again, it’ll be accompanied by a second sensor."

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chip makes it easier for phone makers to offer Duo Camera like features

"The HTC One (M8) Duo Camera sensors send image and depth information to the Snapdragon 801 that powers that device. But the Snapdragon 805 is a different beast with the focus on image processing. Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon powers up the Lytro ILLUM light field camera, which not only means that we could see more Snapdragon powered cameras in the future, it also means that Qualcomm could make it easier to bring Lytro-styled focal changes to smartphones.

And Qualcomm is also hard at work on improving the audio capture on video. A directional microphone array was displayed by the chip producer, that shows how Qualcomm can focus the recording of sound to a specific area while other sounds are ignored."

Btw - WQHD is a marketing term for QHD and is liable to cause unnecessary confusion.

It's 1440p, QHD, same as the LG G3.

Graphics display resolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Another btw - evleaks tweeted the 810 for this, others repeated it. He immediately retracted that as a typo, it's the 805.

Unless this phone is coming out next year, there's zero chance of it getting a 810.

I'm looking at the G3 myself but the more I see here, the more this looks like the one for me.

I don't care about bezels one way or the other, I care about top-pocket-ability with an armored case, so for me, this and the G3 are the same size.

I'm not a gamer, so I don't care a lot about the 805 - except for its potential to improve photos, as may turn out to be the case here.

I've been wanting the front-facing stereo speakers since the M7 a year ago, I just couldn't find the right version for me - until now.

I'm sorry to see the 3 capacitive buttons go, but I think that I can live with it on a 5.5" display.

Before anyone says that they don't take up space really, I added a mod to include them on my 4.7" LTEvo and tried them for a month and oh yes they do too.

As for physical buttons no longer being supported, something I've been told for 2 years, last I checked, it's just an on/off switch in a configuration file.

Anyway, I intend to root and immediately install essential mods -

Check out "Ultimate Dynamic Navbar"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.udn

Check out "SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix

The last one might not be necessary, but probably will be.

You'll want to bookmark that one. Seriously.

After the outing of the G3 specs? Not soon enough.

NOTE: I updated the OP with the rumored camera specs and a link to your post. Ty, Early.

And I wouldn't mind storage above 16 GB.

I suppose it's not *essential* as I've been happy with 16 GB + 64 GB SD card for two years.

I lose my 23 GB Dropbox freebie this month. I wonder if I'd get it back with the M8'?

A ' means prime in math btw, so that's what I'm calling it from now on, the M8'.

Haven't rooted in ages, but, been considering it w/the M8,& more so now after seeing the ULTIMATE DYNAMIC NAVBAR app.

THX for cluing us in on this gem EarlyMon.

I'm guessing it's gonna be a while after the G3 &/or OnePlus One(64GB) is out before we see the M8 Prime,so,basically,it'll boil down to which one of the former two become available 1st,w/an eye towards the future w/the M8 Prime for myself.
Assuming availability for all carriers, that is.

Rooting an HTC is a piece of cake.

My 3-day weekend starts tomorrow, may just do it.Been reading up a bit on the subject, sounds easy enough to restore to out-of-box condition. (For JUMP purposes, although T-Mo hasn't even looked at my 1st 2 for signs, just for factory new/out-of box/no personal data/etc..)

Back to sorta on topic, hadn't really felt the root need until the on-screen buttons w/the M8.
On the FLEX,the option to choose which apps have retractable on-screen buttons is baked-in (SCHWEET!),would like to see that option on all HTC's.

I'm guessing a mid Q3 release for the M8 Prime,to beat/match the NOTE4 out of the gate,akin to the M8/S5 releases & avoiding cannibalizing M8 sales.

Another long wait.............

Liking this phone except the 16 GB internal storage and the fact I'm a vzw customer and root fan.

Right now I'm most interested in this and the G3.

Waiting on G3 announcement tomorrow but I'm so flaky I change my mind everyday! 16gb is a slight disappointment, for all intents and purposes I'm really waiting on the Note 4 forum to pop up because that's the phone I want. I've made up my mind,... really, ....for real!
The anticipation and leaks are totally intoxicating so I'll just read all the wonderful knowledgeable posts.

I like your decisive process - in fact, I love it! It's ok. Well, you know. I mean it could be better. Actually though, I love it! (K, that's pretty obvious yeah. )

I still like the S-Pen, keep looking at the Note, keep getting pulled away.

Honestly, I hate rooting Samsungs. I've done quite a few. I just don't like it at all. That's just me though.

I've already owed it (more precisely, WifelyMon did but in the evening, we'd pick up whichever to use).

The HTC EVO Shift 4G.

Fabulous device. Great looking screen (iPhone sized so that was easy), excellent slider (want screen real estate? don't get a bigger screen, get a slider), long lasting battery like crazy, it just worked. Took a swim in a muddy river - no hard to reach places inside for drainage - perfect. Dropped so many times the speaker grill crimped shut and only then started to lose voice quality.

I picked it up every week for 18 months or more to root it - and just put it back down. You don't mess with perfection.

It still works btw.

But otherwise, I won't use Windows without administrator access, I won't use OS X or Linux without setting a root password, and I won't use an Android without root - for the exact same reasons as the others.

Ok, so the LG G3 event is over. No idea what variations will be offered here or when.

Whatever.

But one thing is clear from the comments - the sad state of root and the acceptance of it.

It reminds me of chatting with Steven in 2010, lurking in the DX root forums and then saying to him, "No. Wait. You are not doing all that to maintain root. You're kidding."

And his response - "Locked bootloader."

Steven, remember your robot in jail avatar? I do.

The M8' is going to have to suck as much as the G3 soars for me to change my mind from the obvious choice.

What sucks is I can't even say that being a VZW customer. I'm sure HTC Dev will once again be rendered useless. Hope for yet another 3rd party solution I suppose.

Go with another carrier? No, not really. I'm one of those trapped souls who has one obvious choice for a carrier if I want a working phone in my travels. Its big and its red.

Someday I'll die.

If the family has money, I'll get a monument.

Because I won't be around, they'll all be free to list the things I got wrong in life.

Given sufficient cash, it's going to be a really tall monument to fit the long list.

But missing from the list will be this -

"Endured crappy phones and crappy rooting experiences because his carrier wouldn't let him choose otherwise and he stayed with them because he thought they were the best, for whatever reason."

That is all.

My monument will say-

"Posthumously Joined AT&T"

Cuz the life insurance policy is about the only way I could afford my only other viable option which costs nearly $100/month for a single line. I'd take less coverage for easy root and a GSM phone option. But yeah, only got so much I can shell out for this habit of mine.

So, due my uneasiness with root, I've decided to not bother with the LG G3.

SO... this is my likely choice.

First order of business will be to keep an eye out for camera protection. I want no part of a scratched lens.

So you mentioned Verizon root as being more difficult than other carries on the HTC?

Rooting a Nexus or an HTC is very similar -

* unlock bootloader with fastboot command
* install custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)
* either install SuperSU or a rooted rom

Just the bootloader unlock is different.

Typically you just visit HTCdev.com and get your bootloader token, iow, your key - and use that.

Except for Verizon and AT&T on various models, you can't get your key from HTC because reason = restricted by carrier.

So you have to rely on a stealth method to be developed that finds a weakness to exploit in the security and just unlocks it anyway.

No guarantee if or when that will be found, so you have to keep your eyes peeled for the announcement.

I'm almost willing to bet that it would show within the first month for this one.

Excellent. Not only do I understand all that you said, because I can relate having had the DX (encrypted), but this encourages me, to boot. Thank you, Early.

I checked the One M8 situation for you.

With the VZW version, you temp root and do the full unlock using what we call an s-off tool. They had it for Verizon customers within days of release.

Then steps 2 and 3 and 3 and 3... LOL.

I'm really starting to warm up to the phablet idea again so I'm going to check out the larger One Max from last year just because I'd like to see the upper limit on size.

No matter what, someone is going to start a meme that the M8' is not good enough, too whatever, and not enough whatever.

I hereby propose a nickname in addition to M8' - the Prime8, spelled Primate.

Attention! Attention!

The new label for the m8 Prime, Primate or Prime8, was officially thought of by EarlyMon, the staffer. We fully expect this to become an internet "meme".

Congratulations, EarlyMon!

Rumors and speculations are back to varying a lot, just like I like it.

The One Plus name came out and died off a few weeks back, as has the same differences in cameras.

HTC's gone ahead with more than one prototype while making decisions in the past, as have others.

I wouldn't be surprised if both versions are real right now - just not selected yet.

Hmm, could be a short thread. Or a false leak. I was really hoping to see this device.

A bit more info than "its off" would be nice.

Yeah, link to his site saying it is one post up, thanks for the tip halon.

Today the Plus was leaked as their new QHD 805 phone, possibly smaller than 5.5".

As for the idea they'll field no QHD 805 -

The pandering to the M8 crowd was low.

"But I just bought the M8 six months before this is coming out! "

What do some people expect? This?

"You're right, we'll stop right now so you feel good and promise to buy one in 12 months. Meanwhile, the jackasses in the news won't cut any slack - too many models, not enough models, too many models, have you heard of Samsung because they're the best, you made one of the the first metal smartphones many years ago but we'll compare you to the iPhone, have you heard about LG, go home with your bezelicious selves - but we'll stop right now.

Because what could be better than a phone designed by the blogosphere? And of course we'll have an M9 if we sit around and do nothing for the next 9 to 11 months."

Great logic.

Man I must be blind, I'm still missing the 2nd article you spoke of re: the lack of 805. Did see this though which appears to have been a little ahead of the curve in logic...if its right?

HTC One M8 'Plus' could be the QHD Prime | News | TechRadar

Is it verified that + = Prime?
