Add the Screenshot shortcut to the quick settings drop down. Swipe down from upper right hand corner, go to settings area, click the pencil on rectangle icon, drag Screenshot up from hidden items. Then when you turn your screen on just swip down and go to the Screenshot button. Press and there you go.

That is how it is on stock nexus and my Moto X. It takes a time or two to get the timing down. I must have take 100 screenshots of my volume slider.

If you hold the power and volume down simultaneously for 1 second it will create a screenshot on the M8

PWR button and Home Icon at the same time will take a screen shot as well.

Power and Volume down do work but I can never get the timing right. The Screenshot short cut is clutch for me! You are welcome.
