I have a tiny 'chip', like in the photo in the article, on the front edge near the headphone jack

Seems to be a few phones having this problem, however HTC are aware and are offering exchanges if it is damaged.

I got mine on launch day. I've been using it ever since without a case and haven't got a single scratch. I honestly believe it's a rare situation and I think a lot of people are over-exaggerating. Or maybe I'm just lucky?

Mine arrived on Friday but had a chip/dent on the righthand side, where the screen meets the plastic on the edge of the handset...not on the metal part of the casing.

Orange are sending out a replacement on Tuesday so fingers crossed it's ok.

Default HTC One S Coating

I've had my One S for only one week from T-Mobile UK. Itís been carefully looked after, not dropped at all and kept in phone sock when not being used, and already the black coating is chipping off around the corner edge of the handset and around the USB/charging connect socket Ė not sure I believe HTC when they say this is an isolated issue!

Update.

With regards to the chipping issue, HTC have acknowledged the problem:

"HTC is committed to delivering a high quality product and great experience for all our customers. There have been a few, isolated reports of this issue. The finish on the One S was laboratory tested as being at a hardness similar to ceramic. While thatís hard, it doesnít mean itís impossible to damage. Regardless, HTC takes quality very seriously and are providing all customers with an immediate fix and we are implementing some small changes to ensure customers do not experience this issue in the future."

However when I phoned the HTC UK customer support number this morning, they were not aware of the issue and the HTC statement, and had no process in place to deal with the matter! What a sorry state of affairs!

I strongly suggest contacting HTC directly. They have always been more than willing to help when I've needed it.

Replacement One S from T-Mobile arrives tomorrow, so I will see if its coating is any more durable; however, T-Mobile have no clue as to which handsets come from MOA processing batch. If the coating fails again I will take it up direct with HTC.

hopefully it will be from a new batch? guessing the original batch would still be affected like yours

Having rasied this issue with HTC UK, their response was:

Dear Steve Loveridge,

Thank you for your reply to my email regarding the cermaic casing chipping off your HTC One S for which you have got a replacement.

No official statement has been made by HTC on this issue, but please keep your eye on the official HTC.com web page and linked Twitter feeds and Facebook pages for any official HTC statements.

I hope you are enjoying your new phone nad have no further issues.

Althouigh I have seen a statement from HTC made a statement via a number of websites (see earlier post), but it does not appear to be formally recognized by HTC UK.

Beefy, which carrier did you get it from? I only ask because I hear rumors that the third production run (the american variants) have fixed the problem.
Contact HTC and they will replace it buddy.

Had my black One-s since launch so nearly 3 weeks now. Not using a case and keep the phone in shirt or trouser pocket (no keys in pocket at same time though)....finish is still as new, no scratches or chips, very pleased with it so far. Haven't dropped it yet, which is the acid test I suppose but it seems rugged enough for normal use.

I got my One S on the 18th. After a day and a half I got chips on the top of the phone. Went in to Carphone Warehouse on Tuesday where I did my upgrade, I showed them the problem and told them what HTC have said. They replaced my phone without any questions, but I know the problem could still happen to this phone, so I'm waiting until the "new and improved" batch are out.

My first post, but always lurking about
I had my One S about two weeks, chipping started immediately after getting it and continued I, at first thought I had been careless. I then read about the fault and sent it back. three replaced the handset no problem.

Annoying thing:
Shipped my phone back to Expansys US (I'm in Canada) last Thursday. It's been stuck in Memphis since early Saturday with a red flag because FedEx lost the FCC form I sent with it. Seems to be getting sorted now, but I can't get my new one until the old one goes back. Arg.

Before purchasing my phone I read about the various issues with chipping.

So I bought a case from Amazon at the same time when buying my phone.

Didn't want to have to return the phone, problem solved, no chipping.

Is this with regard to the black S specifically? I have the grey one and got a chip fairly quickly, despite not being particularly careless with it, but it's not quite as space-age as the black one, is it?

The grey one doesn't have the MAO coating. So it's different than the black version they are discussing.
