Did you renew through Retentions, Upgrades, Retail??
It was over the phone, i believe they said loyalty as the dept name. I hadn't gotten as far as retentions.

I've got a one being delivered on upgrade - ordered through carphone warehouse.

I'm suspect as to whether I could get more - the guy said he'd send me a confirmation email which would detail everything I'm getting, but I haven't received it... so I'll be phoning back and asking for that.

I got the phone for free and I'll be paying 36 a month. I believe it's 1GB/month download allowance with unlimited texts and... erm, can't remember how many minutes, but I believe I also get free use of BT openzone hotspots.

It's a 24 month contract -- just reading through this page though it seems I might not have got the best deal. Perhaps as I went through carphone warehouse and they can't offer any retention deals / flexibility (chose to do so as I didn't want the phone to be locked to Orange, as I travel between Ireland and the UK a lot)

If I was to contact Orange directly would it be possible to discuss any possible changes? I assume I wouldn't be able to negotiate the price as I have renewed the contract, but I'm thinking I might be able to - if not change the price - get a little more for my money.

Phone will be arriving this Wednesday! Looking forward to it... delivery time of somewhere between 7AM and 9PM...

I imagine changing the deal would be difficult now as you took the contract out already and not with orange direct, you went through an authorised agent, worth a phone call though I would say, as you have pointed out, retention deals bring locked handsets mostly and authorised agents like CPW and P4U usually get phones from manufacturers unlocked.

There are 2 reasons I'm looking for a retention deal, number 1 is that I can get a few quid of (hopefully) and a few extras, but also by buying through the network and getting a locked phone, I can take out orange care insurance, I was told this isn't allowed with unlocked handsets.

I think that most deals over the phone or net are subject to the 7 day cooling off period.

You are referring to distance selling regulations I believe, that is true but some companies (not naming names, p4u!) some try to say they are not obligated to honour those regulations for upgrading customers, worth looking into though :-)

I spoke to Orange yesterday about upgrading. I'm on a Dolphin 15 contract (I send a lot of texts, use about 150MB data a month, but only ever make calls to magic numbers - I've got my land line for everything else) and was told I could stay on this contract and pay £171 to upgrade to the One X.

At lunchtime today I went to Phones 4U to upgrade. I'd rather have an unbranded handset so I have no Orange rubbish on the phone, plus getting updates more quickly appeals. Anyway, to stay on the same contract they asked for £342! They tried to push me onto a £36 / month contract to get the phone for free ("then you can change your contract after a year") but I walked out.

Does anyone know if Carphone Warehouse are any better or could I expect the same from them? Thought I'd ask before I hike over there after work.

I doubt CPW will be any better.
To upgrade to a Motorola razr, on my T-mobile account through CPW ( T-Mob don;t list the phone, so only way to get that phone) they were talking about £380 to stay on £15 a month contract, and even if I went to £31 a mnth, it was still over £300. They sell the phone to the network, and the network decides what to allow you off the phone.
It's the reason I went for the One X as I could get a deal straight through T-mobile retentions.
Must say that orange deal is excellent, and you could always get the phone unlocked, sell and buy outright from P4U unlocked and not waste much money doing it. Certainly not anywhere near £342

What happens with the micro sim card? Do they send you a micro sim when you upgrade or do you have to make your own?

I got one in the box with mine, I presume the unbranded from Amazon etc won't have one, but the likes of CPW & P4U will.

I want to upgrade to a One X and at the moment I have an unbranded (no bloatware) HTC Desire from mobiles.co.uk (part of Carphone Warehouse) and my current tariff is extremely good, I feel: T-Mobile Web n Walk unlimited data (3GB fair use but only speed managed if exceeded) 300 any network minutes, unlimited land line calls, 300 texts (perfect for me). Tethering works a treat. My Desire cost me £90 but I got half of that back with a cashback at the time. All this cost me £20/month over 2 years.

I did call mobiles.co.uk and they said an upgrade team person would be in touch, but this was a few weeks ago and nobody has. Has anyone had any luck upgrading from a similar web n walk contract via mobiles or CPW? I don't really want a T-Mobile branded and restricted One X, so I'd prefer to upgrade through mobiles/CPW and keep my existing contract tariff.

Well I'm rather unimpressed with Orange...

Yesterday I called Customer Services and asked about upgrades and - as stated earlier - was quoted £171 up front for a 1X (a figure I read back to them twice for confirmation) if I stayed on my current Dolphin 15 contract. At lunchtime today I went to Phones 4 U hoping to get a 1X free of Orange bloatware and also able to receive updates more quickly but was asked for £342 which I declined via the method of standing up and walking out of the shop.

So tonight I decided to go back to Orange. I went into my local Orange shop and was asked for £250 to upgrade, and when I mentioned the £171 I was told that Customer Services could give loyalty deals etc. so as soon as I got home I called CS again prepared to do the upgrade.

Somewhat surprisingly I was asked for £300! I explained about the £171 quote and was told categorically that they couldn't do this, and that there was no record of the call yesterday (even though after the call I'd received a text asking me to complete a satisfaction survey, which I did) at which point the line suddenly broke up and we were disconnected. I called back, waited 10 minutes (forced to listen to Pixie Lott as hold music - may sue them for ear trauma) and spoke to someone completely different who again found no record of either yesterday's call or the one earlier, and quoted me £200 for the handset on my current tariff.

Ive been there nasalhair, if you shouted at a member of staff they could pin point the recorded call, but get offered something you shouldn't have any surprisingly they will not be able to locate said offer or call!

Always the way. That's why I hate networks.

yep been there too. The Razr was originally offered at my current £15 a month tariff, and no upfront fee. Excellent deal I thought, said yes, then got told the new version of the Razr was out, did I want that? Thinking it was the Maxx, I said yes to be sent the Motoluxe. Wasn't allowed anything until returned, then got told CPW would provide the phone and even though I had a deal done and contract made, they conveniently forgot the original deal for the Razr and started asking for £100's upfront. It was only complaining to the directors email that I think got me what I consider a great deal on the One x. I have no loyalty to any company, as none of them recognise the other way round anymore.
Just hoping T-mobile have not had time to tamper with the handsets yet.

Just keep asking for the migration code, and wait a few days, then ask for a deal again. You might find when it gets closer to the leaving date they get better at offering deals. Just means waiting.

Well well well surprise surprise, orange just phoned me to tell me there are a few one x in stock but the deal I was offered before by 2 advisors, they suddenly can't do it, "these offers can not coexist" I honestly could throttle some of the peoe I've spoken to.

They offer
They retract
They offer
They deny some more! Ahhhhhhh lol

*rant over.

sorted out my upgrade through 3 yesterday.
£35 a month with the phone free and everything under the sun (including the all you can eat data I needed) Got them to right off the early upgrade fee as well that I should have been charged for given I have 4 months on my contract still.

Phone should arrive thursday or friday, can't wait.

Further update!

Just been into Carphone Warehouse and was offered the handset as an upgrade from my current Dolphin 15 to Panther 20 (I hardly ever use the minutes on my contract but send a lot of texts and use about 150MB internet, the rest being used on wifi) for £139. I'm tempted to go for it, but there's one thing that is bothering me...

Oh, has anyone had any experience of CPW's insurance? They're asking for £13/month for it. I've previously used Orange Care and found it to be great but I've checked with Orange & can't protect a phone bought elsewhere, so I'm looking at the CPW insurance. However a quick Google search reveals a lot of people saying CPW's insurance should be avoided at all costs, plus £13/month is an awful lot more than £6/month I pay with Orange.

Oh no :-( its gone out of stock at orange again :-( well this give me some time to reaffirm some things

Firstly my original offer is not unlimited data as was first thought. So here are my options

Both are priced 30.60 a month for 24 months.

Unlimited minutes (3 thousand fair usage) unlimited messages and 1.5gb of data on a panther 36 tetherable plan. No swappables (this is a loyalty plan)

1200 mins, unlimited text and unlimited Internet (truly unlimited) with 2 swappables included. (this is a standard plan)

What do we think guys, I'm still leaning towards the top offer but maybe I'm missing something or not thinking about something, I average about 860 mins in my phone at present but my gf will be going to uni soon and she's with tesco and doesn't use the orange sim I gave her which is linked as a magic number. Also I'm hopefully going to be setting my own web based business soon aswell but could involve alot of phone calls or data usage.

All advice welcome and appreciated, even if it's to say that you think there is still another deal left in Orange. I doubt there is because some these extras are line rental discounts and discretionary discounts by the advisors themselves.

Is the second deal tetherable data? I doubt it because they only seem to offer tetherable on limited data contracts - so that you can pay extra when you go over your measly allowance. And you will if you are tethering it.

What I would ask is whether you want to use that nice 720p screen for watching youtube videos etc? because HD video streaming is going to use a lot of data. With a phone like this it seems a travesty to be limited in your data usage.

And is your gf adamantly sticking to tesco? If you're not taking advantage of magic numbers, why stick with orange if you can get a better deal from another provider? on 3 you can get tetherable unlimited?

At least look for better deals on other networks as leverage when you ask for your PAC and they start dealing with you properly.

ok you 2 best options, are to go with 3 as mentioned above, as you get the following for £38 a month (I got it for 35 as im upgrading so may be worth asking if they can knock off a few quid)
  • All-you-can-eat data
  • 2,000 minutes
  • 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes.
  • 5,000 texts
  • 24 months
or

go with t mobile if the signel in your area isn't 3 friendly (and they use orange's signel as well as they are the same parent company now so thats a plus).

you get a very similar deal to the one from 3 and they are the only other carrier offering truly unlimited data now.

It's a tough one for me, ive been told Davoid that both those plans are tetherable as thy are both on the panther plan which is exclusively allows you to tether you inclusive data allowance.

I hear what you are all saying about a network switch, however an extra 5 quid is 120 pounds a yea and to get free phone I need to be on 38 plan with 3 or 41 with tmobile.

I just can't see me getting a better deal than what I've been offered, 90% of the orange upgrade/detentions advisors won't offer me the deal I have been offered largely because the advisor who offered it has used one of his safecards he's allowed monthly to bump one of my options up to unlimited. I only get 15% off by fluke and although a band 4 customer, my loyalty points are low and barely cover the cost of the phone free at 36 a month (which new customers get)

How about this on 3: 2000 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited tetherable data. You pay £64.99 for the phone, then it's £29/month...

HTC One X White on 3 3 The One Plan 24 months with Delivery

EDIT:
I just clicked on the offer to buy it, checking it was available, and it then informs you that the all-you-can-eat data is NOT INCLUDED, and prompts you to add it for another £5...

That deal blatantly says unlimited data

There we go so that deal means I pay out 65 quid for phone and I would have to pay another 5 pound a month for tether, that means I'm worse of with that deal as far as I can see?

Have you tried ringing the other providers?
My last phone should have been about £50 or so on my contract, but ringing and asking got the phone for free. Just tell them you have been offered xxx deal, don;t lie too much, and would rather go direct, if they can match it.
I usually use dial a phone or mobiles.co.uk to see what they offer, vis quidco or TCB, and compare the total cost.
Must say that the orange deals seem reasonable though.

Nasalhair, I ordered this deal on Friday. Now just waiting for it to arrive as, unfortunately, its being delivered by Yodel and they've messed up already.
I went through Quidco so hopefully will get £50 cashback and then sell/trade-in my Desire to cover the upfront cost.

As for insurance, I put 2 Desires on my house insurance last year for around a £15 increase in my premium and will be ringing them to see how much extra they want for the One's.

call up 3 and ask for the one x on the one plan for £35 a month and say that's what you have been offered from orange and you are willing to switch providers if they can match it.

They generally bend over backwards for a new customer if you just push a bit.

Hi All,

Well having watched and read the threads on here...I've bitten the bullet and taken my T-Mobile upgrade. Moving from a Desire to the One X, I was originally going to go with the Sensation XE but as there was only £40 in it I figured latest and greatest. Should be delivered Saturday....just the looooong wait now !
T-Mobile advise me that there is a micro-sim (plus adaptor) in the box and transfer is via their website.
Anyone else picked one up from T-Mobile UK ?

Cheers,
Pete.

T-Mobile advise me that there is a micro-sim (plus adaptor) in the box and transfer is via their website.
Anyone else picked one up from T-Mobile UK ?

Pete, what deal did you have with your Desire? Have you kept the same deal for the One X? I am possibly in a very similar situation as you.

Hi Ian,

Had my Desire on the £10 pm plan (100mins, Unltd Text and 3GB Web) for 24 mths...that has just finished and was on a mthly roll over. I've upgraded to the One X for £290 and extended my £10 pm plan for the next 24 mths.

Cheers,
Pete.

How much did you pay for the Desire on top of your £10/month?

I'm currently on £20/month (well, slightly more since the VAT rise) for 300 minutes, 300 texts, unlimited landline calls, Web'n Walk (3GB+) and paid £90 for the phone but got £50 cashback, so £520 for the two years.

I'm very content with that plan and so want to get the new phone for as little as possible

Hi Ian,

I paid £164 for the Desire, so was £404 for the initial 2years.

Do you have a login to the T-Mobile website ? If so it should show your upgrade options if you're now out of the 24mth initial contract period. Would like to think you'd get the phone cheaper than me if you're already on a £20pm plan.
When I spoke to T-Mobile CS, they'd had a fresh delivery this morning of One Xs.

My One X will stand me in at ~£540 with plan over 24mths (considering it's £480 SIM-free unlocked at Amazon for just the phone).

Cheers,
Pete.

Hi Pete, it's just a few days away from one month to go before my contract ends, so I don't think my options are visible on my T-Mobile account yet.

I got me Desire from mobiles.co.uk/Carphone Warehouse so it is unbranded and unlocked - my daughter is on Orange PAYG but her sim will go straight into my Desire.

I'd prefer another unlocked phone again - any idea if yours will be even though you are getting yours from T-Mobile?

Hi Ian,

Not too long to wait then....I know that feeling..my options showed up one month before expiry. I decided to wait and see what T-Mobile was going to do with the new HTC line-up - Glad I did.

Afraid I didn't ask, but I should imagine mine will be locked to T-Mobile as it's coming direct from them.

I expect you'll have a decent upgrade deal, just a question of whether CPW would be able to match it for you and stay on the current plan.

Cheers,
Pete.

Yeah, bean in touch with mobiles and someone should be calling me today. My contract us up on 18th May but as you know you can upgrade up to a month early.

I'm expecting to pay something for the handset - hopefully less than £100 and stay on my current plan. I also have two other plans on my account for my wife and daughter No.2 so I expect they would want to retain them as well!

Upgrading from my Desire at last which was on Panther 30 with 400 mins unlimited txts and 1GB data costing about £32 a month.

Started looking for deals in local phones4u best they would give me was panther £36 with 900 mins unlimited txts and 1GB data which was'nt too appealing.

later that day I got a call from phones4u orange dept or something who offered me the free handset with 600mins unlimited txts and 1GB data for £28.50 per month but I wanted to try for a bit more so after a while she put me onto her manager who eventually offered to send me a cheque for £25 as well because I was not happy about the lack of beats headphones.

So overall brand new sexy phone and 200 more minutes for £28.50 a month down from £32. not bad considering my gf is paying £36 per month for her sensation XE on panther 36 :P

Hoping it is delivered when I get home from work

ot my t mobile one x yesterday. Micro sim in box, not too much hassle or wait to change the number over.
Paying about 550 over 24 months for mine, 190 upfront on 15 pm deal.
I would expect you would pay less than 100 upfront on 20 pm. Got both my daughter's on contract with my account too, and they were not that bothered about me leaving originally. You at least have an idea on what price they will give though.
Phone looks as if it is locked to tm, but not much bloatware on it.

Hey Pete,

I am also in pretty much the same situation as you were. I have a Desire on the £10pm contract with 100 mins and unlimited texts, but I only get 500mb of internet. I have the option to upgrade to the One X on the website for £290 and keep my current contract, but I was looking to pay a little less upfront or perhaps get the extra internet.

How did you get the 3gb for your previous contract? I called upgrades yesterday afternoon but the guy I spoke to wouldn't budge!

Hi Tim,
The original Desire contracts all came with 3GB, if memory serves me. T-Mobile changed it to 500MB later on. Therefore my plan (like Ians) has always been 3GB.
Sorry, but I therefore didn't need to negotiate this with them.
When did you start your plan and was it 500MB from the start?

Cheers,
Pete.

I ordered it online early April 2010, as far as I knew they had always been 500mb, there was no option to have more without getting an add-on.

When did yours start? I think I'd prefer to pay less than get the additional data but I'm doubtful as to whether they'd allow it.

Thanks
Tim

Mine was May 2010. There was a catch, though. You needed Web'n Walk, which was only provided by default if you got your phone direct from T-Mobile. I had to make quite a few phone calls to T-Mobileto get them to switch me to Web'n Walk because my phone was provided by mobiles.co.uk. But they did it in the end. The two other phones on my account also have Web'n Walk but these were deals direct with T-Mobile.

Well that's strange because I ordered mine direct through the T-Mobile website. Maybe I'll bring this up when I call next because I have reached the 500mb limit a couple times over the 2 year period.

It may well be that you had web'nwalk but there was a lot of confusion over the data tariff later in the year when T-Mobile tried to impose a 500MB limit but then rescinded it. I have read that many people's accounts were not reverted to the original deal and they had to contact T-Mobile to get it sorted out. In fact my account details online look a bit strange but I haven't had any problems.

Hi Tim,

Yes mine was March 2010. My wifes Wildfire was June 2010 (direct with T-Mobile) and has the 3GB allowance. I agree with Ian, think you need to make a fuss and get them to check your account details.

Cheers,
Pete.

I just got off the phone with T-Mobile, and they've decided to complicate things even more so.

This time when I asked about upgrading and keeping my current plan, they said that I wouldn't be able to get internet on the £10 a month plan, and would have to step up to £15 a month. Apparently the plan I'm on is discontinued...

Also he added that the internet deal that I have with my current plan was part of a promotion and therefore cannot be continued. So I could go for the £10 a month plan without internet but I don't see it being of any use to me, since the One X is pretty internet reliant.

I'm not keen on the £15.50 a month contract, he said I'd only pay £250 upfront but it brings the total over the 2 years to £622, a figure I am not willing to spend considering its almost £100 more than what you guys will pay.

I haven't mentioned web'n walk as of yet.

technically i was happy to be paying £25 over 18 months (which is £450), dropping to a sim only for 6 months @ £10 each month brings a total of £510 over 24 months (is how i look at it).

the issue for me is that I feel I'll need way more than 500mb as I regularly hit 400mb a month and that's not using ALL its features regularly.

I am willing to pay a premium to be on a plan that offers lots and lots of data, hence I've been looking towards the 3 and their one plan's as it offers tethering.

glad to see that some form of haggling can be done which is awesome, only 10days to go before i speak to the upgrades team for mine...booooo....and if that fails, guess i'll see what happens when the SG3 come out

p.s. t'mob only had a fair usage policy system where it warns you when you tip over the limit right? i.e. not immediately charge you for data over your tariff limit?

Hi Tim,

That's very odd...especially if the website is indicating that you can upgrade and roll your current plan over. I believe you indicated that in your original post. I wonder if T-Mobile are trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Cheers,
Pete.

IIRC T-Mobile changed their data plan about June July 2010.
Ring up T-Mobile direct, that's what I did, and ask their retention people for a better price. On my 100 min, ul text ul data £15 a month plan they quoted £210 for the phone originally. This wasn't a deal or retention thing, so I asked for a little more. You should be near that.

Upgraded with T-Mobile after telling them I would leave after seeing a good deal on buymobiles.net they offered me £30pm, 18 months, 600 mins, unlimited data and texts, free One X.

Quite happy with that considering many places have data limits and 24mths as standard now.
