I am currently the owner of an HTC Desire which I have loved for the last 20 months. However, as most people on these forums will no doubt be aware, the space on board the Desire (for apps or anything else for that matter) was extremely limited and this was its major negative point. For the last few months I've had to be very careful what I put on my phone and every night I run an app cache cleaner to clear out space, but even so I'm down to my last 35 MB. I know some people are even lower than that, but I made a decision not to get too low in case it impacted the phone's performance. But of course I've had to say no to a number of apps that otherwise I'd have downloaded.
I'm now at a point where very soon I'll be able to upgrade my phone and this time I'm determined not to allow myself to get into the same problem of compromised space as before.
My next phone will probably be either the One X or the Galaxy S III. However yesterday I came across some comparative statistics on Android phones on another site and was a little bit alarmed at what appears to be a limit on the One X on space for apps. Whilst the phone has 32 GB on board it seems that only 1758 MB (1.7 GB) of these are available for apps.
To be fair, the Desire (according to the graphic in question) only had 98 MB for apps, and most other phones in the market today seem to be similarly limited. So for example, Galaxy S II - 1935 MB, Galaxy Note - 1920 MB, Experia S - 1801 MB, One S - 2012 MB, RAZR - 3699 MB.
There are 2 exceptions to this rule. The Galaxy Nexus which has a whopping 12981 MB and the new Galaxy S III which has 10712 MB. The reason for this is that these 2 phones have a common partition for apps and user data.
Because I've always had to be frugal with my apps I really don't have much feel for space. So my big question is - IS 1.7 GB ON THE ONE X ENOUGH FOR APPS? I guess it might be a little early to ask, since the phone has only been out a couple of months, but I'd be interested to hear people's experiences. If it's an issue it will become a major factor in making my decision when I upgrade.

Given most Android apps are only a couple of MB, I'd say that 2GB is more than ample. There's also the option of moving stuff to the SD Card if you run out of space.

I had the same problem with my Desire towards the end, I was constantly removing apps to replace them with an app I needed at that time, then replacing that one again once I'd finished with it!
With my OX I've installed every app I've ever used before in total and more and I still have 1.18GB left, not only that but you can still move apps to the internal SD card to free up even more space if needed. And there is a built in wizard now that helps you free up memory from both the phone and internal storage, rather than on the desire where you had to install an app to help with this.
I had a Desire for 2 years and I always was at round 20Mb so could not download a lot of Apps. Since I have had the One X I have downloaded all the Apps I used to have on the Desire and many more including some very large Games the way my phone looks so far is:
Internal Storage
Total space 2.11GB
Apps 348Mb
Available 1.77GB
Phone Storage
Total Space 25.24GB
Available 18.19GB
I have loads of Video's and Pictures on there as well. I am more than happy with the numbers don't think I will use all my space up.

Not on the One X there isn't. There is no SD card facility!

But you're the 2nd person in this thread to refer to an internal SD card on the One X...yet everything I've read about the phone says that it does NOT have an SD card facility. So what is the truth?

The partition of the internal memory set aside for saving pictures and video etc functions exactly as an SD Card would. It appears as an external disk when you connect the phone to the PC and file managers treat it as an SD Card too.
So, for all intents and purposes, the One X has an SD Card.

Aye, sorry. I wasn't deliberately trying to be misleading, but as acidstrato points out, that is what it's referred to as.
