Default General questions thread/discussion (New to Android? Lots of info inside)

Can anyone verify if factory reset would erase any pictures on my phone?

And if it would, how to recover without losing them?!

Thank you

Moved to Android Lounge section.

Welcome to AF, c04u5.
If you have an SD card and you're pictures are saved on there then no it shouldn't especially if you check a box when you're about to to not delete contents on the SD card. You could always safely unmount the SD card to remove it in case you're not sure and want to be on the safe side.

Get a Dropbox account, sync your pictures. THEN do your factory reset.

Default General questions/help (New to Android?)

Just got my HTC One yesterday and on the whole I really like it, however I have a couple of issues that hopefully someone on here might be able to help me with ??

Is it possible to have a full settings shortcut on any of my screens ?
Whenever I try to add this like I have done on previous phones it's asking me to be more specific and choose an option out of the settings menu rather than letting me have the settings shortcut in general.

Is it possible to knock off the options bar from the bottom of Facebook and Twitter ?
Before deciding on the HTC One I was really looking forward to going from the 4.8" screen of my S3 to a 5". Then because I wasn't impressed with the S4 it was a straight choice between the Xperia Z and the HTC One.
In all honesty that would have been a no brainer had The One packed a 5" screen, which was one of the only things that was putting me off.
With this options bar in place at the bottom of the screen on both apps it makes the viewing of both apps around 3.5" which I'm really disappointed with

Can I make the battery indicate show the percentage in the notification bar or do I have to download another app ?

Also I've been having music player issues. I spend a lot of time flicking through radio shows and mixes that I've downloaded, something I've never had a problem with on any other phone I've had.....until this.
When I'm flicking the progress bar to skip forward the music stops playing forcing me to mess about with it to get it started again.
Then the music player keeps freezing but with the music still playing, when it does this I'm unable to pause or change tracks.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do, if anything, to fix it ?

Whilst on the subject of the music player any music that was listed as "unknown artist" download some track art which for some reason is Diana Ross ffs lol. How do I stop it doing this and is it possible to remove this artwork from the 20 or so mixes that it's associated itself with ?

Thanks in advance

i can't answer all your queries but I can answer some of them.

On the settings shortcut issue, just add in Settings as an app rather than as a shortcut. That way it opens the full settings menu not a submenu.

There isn't a way to add in the battery percentage but a lot of us use Gsam from the app store as it gives really detailed info on battery use. The Battery Life thread has loads of screenshots from it for reference. That app has multiple options for battery percentage in the status bar.

You can stop the Music player from adding artist photos or album art by going to music Player > Options > Top two tickboxes.

I went through that bottom bar reducing screen area frustration with my One X.

I rooted and went with a rom that remapped the buttons and got rid of that bar, problem solved. If rooting is for you, I believe that we list a rom that does that in our root forum. Makes long-press on the back button the new menu button as memory serves.

PS - it's actually called the overflow button rather than the menu button by Google, but a rose is a rose, ok.

I don't think you can show battery bar as a percent in the notification bar without rooting and flashing a mod.

GSAM Batter Monitor can put up a percentage in the notifcation part of the status bar, but that's in addition to the standard icon rather than replacing it.

So yeah, that's downloading another app.

Check out HTC Transfer Tool in the Play Store. It helps transfer all your old info from your old Android to the One. I am not positive but it should transfer your email accounts.

Got the phone and ran the transfer function.

Wouldn't transfer the contacts or e-mail accounts. It did transfer sms, photos, calender and bookmarks.

i should add that I used MyBackUp Pro which was not a good experience, unless I did not use it correctly. I thought when I backed up the apps that it would back up history held in those apps like game scores, notes etc. Especially my splash ID app which had my passwords stored in it. But unfortunately not. Even then I couldn't restore more than a couple of apps at a time or it wiuld lose connection standing beside the router.

Default New Android user help

Hi guys - absolutely loving the HTC one, but I've got a couple of things I need help with having moved from iOS.

On the HTC email app, it keeps reverting to 'all email' folder when I come in and out of the app. For example, I will get an unread notification, read the email or delete it from the inbox, and come out the app (when in the inbox). And when I re-open the app, it takes me to the all email view so I can see every email including ones in the trash.

The other niggle I have is that being OCD - I've noticed that the silver bezel at the top of the phone (where the speaker is) has got a slight gap between it and the white bezel that surrounds the phone. Has anyone else noticed this on their phone. The rest of the bezel around the phone is completely gap free and flush. It's not impairing use of the phone or anything - more just a slight irritant at this stage. I'll try and post a photo later as the HTC is my only camera available just now!

May will try and head along to the 3 store and see what they say to it.

Default RE:A Couple of Questions

Here's one of the best reviews for the ONE & it mentions the gap you're referring to.

AnandTech | The HTC One Review

Whether it's actually something to be concerned about is a fair question.Perhaps a direct communication to HTC will get you an answer.

As for your e-mail queries,I'm sure someone will chime in soon to help (still patiently awaiting U.S. release).....

Go into your mail settings, you ought to be able to set the default view to just the inbox rather than all folders. That's been a standard setting option with HTC Mail all along, so even though I don't have your phone, I'd be really surprised if they changed that.

That's what I thought I'd be able to do, but can't see it anywhere in my settings? If it's worth mentioning I'm using my icloud email (me. Com).

These are my two screens. Is it because I've got all folders set to sync?

I use me.com and others.

Ok, my bad, poor description.

Open Mail, 3 dots, Folder.

Is that set to all messages or all inboxes?

It's set to inbox at the moment, but it I was to go out of mail, get a new email and delete or whatever it randomly goes to the all messages view and I have to manually set it back to inbox only.

So, it's doing that on just normal email work then?

Yeah - that's a new bug, I've not seen that on Sense 1, 2, 3, 3.5 or 4.

Best thing is to contact HTC and let them know - please keep us all posted on that.

Do you think it will be possible to unlock a Sprint ONE?

If so, will it work in Europe assuming I get a local sim?

(are GSM capabilities in proper bands available if appropriate sim is installed and phone is unlocked?)

Are Ones in black available?

Does anyone have a quote or info from HTC regarding cost to change out battery? (I'm thinking 2 yrs. away here.)

1) I assume Sprint will stick to it's policy of having to be on Sprint for X amount of time before they will unlock the SIM. They mention in the Get Started Guide that in order to activate the Worldwide Service you must first at least have run some Sprint Data.
2) It has GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz and UMTS 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz. LTE will not work in Europe no matter what.
3) Black Ones are not available for order yet
4) No quotes on swapping out the battery but based on iFixIts tear down it doesn't look like it is a simple process, if possible at all.

Hi,

New android user with a few questions. I've previously had iPhones but bought a HTC one. Which I really like so far. Id like to get rid if blinkfeed. I've heard you can't delete it, I've read that I can set up another home screen as the default screen and set up blinkfeed with no source data. That's what I've done so far, which is okay. But I'm thinking of getting a different launcher. Thoughts on this please. Pros and cons. Etc

Thanks

Go with Nova or Apex, both are great launchers and give you a lot of choice. I personally like Nova better, but both are great.

The only con I can think of is you cannot use any sense widgets, which was never a big deal to me.

Yep, no problem.

A launcher is just an app, no different than a browser.

Just as you may try Boat Browser, and set it as your default if you wish, you can keep the app and swap back the default or remove the app and Bob's your uncle, everything will be ok.

Sorry for the low-res picture, here's my homescreen with Nova on a One X type HTC.

I like my homescreens clean and I load favorite apps into folders in my dock.

The dock scrolls independently of the homescreens, pretty handy.

When you do another launcher you lose HTC widgets. I'm using 3D time and weather made by Droid27, free and excellent.

Both the Renovate and Orio One roms do it with the back button, you have to root to install.

There may be other options, those are the two I've read on.

Default Stock weather animations

Hello all. Please tell me if I'm going mad. Very occasionally, usually when I'm half asleep, I see the simple, stock weather icons move. At first I thought it was my eyes decieving me but I know those sneaky clouds were moving. To be clear I'm talking about the white, non coloured pictures not the full colour animations. Trouble is, I can't get it to work all the time and every time I show someone, it doesn't move. Am I going mad? Great phone by the way excepting the hit and miss back button. Thanks for any advice on fixing this.

No you definitely aren't going mad. I have seen the stock weather animations move quite often too.

Default Can stock weather app colour be changed?

Help please!

Is there any way to change the AccuWeather app from monochrome to colour?

Even sunny days look dull in monochrome!!

IF you are talking about stock sense weather animations, then I don't believe you can in the stock configuration. Just HTCs way.

I loaded Nova on the store sample and it works nicely. Had a question: There's a screen in Nova settings, I believe it's the Desktop, where it's shows up in red and directs you to close all open apps. When I do swipe away all the open apps, the panel is still red which seems to indicate there's an app open there somewhere. Anyone know what this means?

I can't find that on mine, sorry.

Sounds more like the task manager.

Welcome to the forums!

No one is going to be harsh here, no worries.

Your description could be read a few ways, let's start with themes.

Please search the Play Store for Nova.

You'll see the Nova launcher (a replacement for Sense home screens) and also a long list of themes that work with the Nova and Apex launchers. View samples of various screen shots, report back if that's on the track you had in mind.

Default htc backup or google backup?

i saw that htc will provide a backup service exclusively for the One. while reading i saw that you would have to disable google as your backup service.

what do you guys plan to do? use the htc service? or continue to use google? i'm a bit hesitant to change, as google works extremely well.

what are your thoughts? pluses or minuses of one over the other?

I'll always use googles services rather than manufacturer supplied ones.

Googles will still work no matter what android phone you buy next

Default Native Yahoo mail push?

As I was using the display model of the phone, I went in to the email settings and noticed it had a native preset for Yahoo mail. Does this mean I can set up my yahoo mail just like my iphone AND get push notifications? Can any yahoo mail users confirm this?

Default Installing Facebook Home app on UK version HTC ONE

Has anybody been able to install facebook home on your HTC one ?

I know the software is a pile of crock , but I wouldn't mind have a go on it myself. I've read that the HTC is one of the few supported devices. It allows me to download and install. However when I open it, it says your device is currently not supported.

I have a UK SIM free HTC one.

Clock in the app drawer.
You swipe left or right to use the alarm, stopwatch, etc.

Exactly this for me too. Google services works fine and allowed easy transition of a lot of stuff over from my iPhone 5 to the HTC One and will allow the transition of data things purely by signing in on a new device with my Google account.
