Default Wifi help/discussion

Wow I have had two weird issues with this phone already. Okay So everytime I connect to my home network with my htc one, and start browsing it all the sudden kicks everybody on my home network off the internet including me on the htc one. My router will then let everyone back on to the network and I can stay connected with my HTC one but the instant I start browsing or using any sort of data on the One it will kick everyone off again. I mean from my pc to my smart tv to my wifes phone, everyone gets kicked off like the router is resetting or something.

Is this a known issue? Is there some setting on the phone that can help?

some questions:

what band are you using? 2.4? 5?

what encryption?

do you have the phone set to "best wifi performance"?

is the wifi preference set to "AUTO" or one specific band?

what channel are you on?

What router? Let me guess, netgear?

I am using D-Link router, on 2.4 band, WPA encryption, best wifi performance = not on, wifi is set to 2.4 on phone, and the router is on auto channel.

def. turn on best wifi performance.

can you test on 5ghz or does your router not have that freq?

use wifi analyzer. its in the store, or any app that lets you sniff out AP channels to find the least crowded router channel. 2.4 shares a lot with cordless phones, microwaves, and other electronics.

make sure your router is up to date. are you using 3rd party router software or is it stock router software?

this phone does very well on 5ghz, but for now, turn on best wifi, sniff out a better channel (instead of just AUTO) and lock the router to it. reboot the sucker and reboot your wifi devices.

pain in the butt i know but no pain no gain..

I updated the router to the latest firmware but that didnt seem to help. My router does not have the 5ghz option. It keeps kicking me off the router after like 3 minutes of activity. What else can I do? Should I try another router? My galaxy s3 had no problems with this router though?

could be issues with the firmware in the phone. its a new product and there are bugs for sure.

i use a cisco e4200 and run mixed mode. the one uses 5ghz here and at the job it uses 2.4. no issues at all at either site. i am stock and not rooted.

not sure if a new router would help but i can assure you i have no issues with my setup. i have several mixed mode devices and they are all playing nicely.

i have seen a post or two about this issue you are seeing. its the weekend, so give it a day or so when others log on and check this space. you may have some others who have the issue.

although i ALWAYS run "best wifi performance", some who initially did not run this setting ticked and then DID noticed things improved.

also make sure fastboot is NOT ticked....

EDIT: so i dont use any battery saver modes, do you by chance have your phone set to kill wifi at idle or sleep? this may be confusing the router if you have the phone set to shut off wifi when idle, etc..

Assign every device on your network an IP Address. Anytime I have run into this kind of behavior is was a DHCP issue. In your router manual the steps to do this would probably be under Reserving IP Addresses. This way every device will be assigned the same IP Address every time rather than DHCP cycling through the available IP's every time something connects. This may fix the issue.

great idea sik,

or to just make it easy, give the htc one a static ip first before doing this to all of your devices...

Sometimes the easiest fix is to unplug the router itself for a few seconds and plug it back in.

Unhappy Wifi error--will not turn back on

Hi,

It's my first time here and I want to ask a question about my new HTC one. My brother was fiddling with it and said I should use data all the time and said he was turning off my wifi which was fine with me until I started wanting to use HTC share which seems to require wifi. Now I can't seem to turn my wifi back on. i just says error and no matter what I try in the advanced settings it doesn't seem to turn it on.

Please help or direct me to some help...

Default Try thisÖ

So what happens when you go and try to turn the Wi-Fi back on? Does it just turn it right back off? Does it say that the Wi-Fi is on but you just have no internet? I might need a few more details to get to the actual issue and then a solution. If you are having issues connecting to Wi-Fi then check out Canít connect to Wi-Fi on an android phone? Hereís the fix for some tips.

If the steps at the top of that article donít work then it could be a software bug and as a last resort I would perform the all powerful Master Reset (or Factory Data Reset). You will of course want to backup your data from your device first if you need help with that then look into reading How to Backup and Reset an Android Phone.

If you do these things your phone should start connecting to Wi-Fi correctly again. Enjoy and donít forget to let us know how it turns out.

Default Help with Wifi

When I go to my settings to try turn on my wifi it won't flip the switch from off to on and it says error. Then when I click right on the wifi words I go to another pane that says To see available networks turn wifi on. So I try again here and it says error again. So I go into settings here and then into advanced because it is the only option I can choose. I can't really do much here either. It says both the MAC and IP addresses are unavailable. The article you sent talked about getting addresses and passwords right but I don't know where to do that or if I'm just not being asked for that. I am not in airplane mode but I have tried turning it on and off to see if it would kickstart anything. It won't work at home or at my office where connections work fine. I don't know how to a reset properly and I'm a little afraid I will do further damage. What are your thoughts?

Default Yeah it sounds like a software glitch

Yeah itís sounding more and more like a bug. Here is what I recommend you doÖ

Backup your phone to a computerÖ

Check your Gmail account (make sure you can log into it on a computer)Ö

Do the factory data reset.

This should get your phone working correctly again. Just make sure you backup your information before the reset. Itís going to make your phone think itís brand new again.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Default Need help with wifi/data problem

I have wifi active and connect to my wifi networks no problem, but when I am outside and I am not in range of my wifi networks my phone wont connect to data with wifi active. If there is a wifi in the area that my phone picks up and I dont have the password for it I have to shut my wifi off before I can connect using data. Shouldn't the phone do that automatically? Please let me know what to do. Thanks...

Hello Antmf.

Just uncheck "notify me" in the main menu's wifi settings area. It'll still offer wifi connectivity when in range, but data will take over (as long as you have a data agreement with a carrier ) when no wifi network is selected by you.

It is unchecked. Allow me to explain more in detail. When not in wifi area my data works fine. But say I am in a cable wifi area like comcast or opt online etc. It shows up as though I am connected to those networks but need a password etc. to log in and due to the fact I don't access the cable wifi. I can't access the internet al all. It seems like it is trying to use wifi and data won't take over because of the cable wifi in area. Then I have to turn wifi off completely to use data. I would think the phone should do that itself. PLease let me know if there is anything else I could do. Thanks...

Default Security on Wifi Network

At work we can connect our personal phones, ipads and laptops to the secure wifi network connection and surf the web on our breaks/lunch. Our office is very small and family run - this is not some big corporation. Two of my co-workers have had issues with the "I.T." guys making comments about pictures on their iphone and ipad - pictures my co-workers have never shown the I.T. guys. It freaks me out to think these guys are gaining access to our personal information. My questions are: 1. Is it possible for these guys to access info on our smartphones or iphones when we are connected to the wifi network? and 2. Is there an app that we can install on either Android (I have a HTC One) or iphones that will keep them out? It's not like we have anything to hide, it is just the principle of it all. It is not their jobs to snoop thru our phones.

If you don't want them looking on your phone, don't utilize their network. It's as simple as that in my opinion.

As a member in the Air Force, we have some people who don't access their bank or credit card accounts from government computers. They don't want our comm (short for communications, otherwise IT) personnel to see their passwords and sensitive information. We can be monitored at any time by comm because of utilizing a government computer while at work.

I too am having issues with my WiFi, I can't connect to anything for more than a few minutes. This is with my two WiFi networks at home and my WiFi network at work.

All three networks worked fine on my Cyanogenmod Droid X that I had prior to getting this phone.

At home, where it is an option, I even tried a non-DHCP, Static connection, and still no go.

I have tried combinations of all the Advanced settings, and currently I have "Sleep" set to Always on, "Optimization" off, "Best" On, and have tried forcing to both 5ghz and 2.4ghz.

Once I connect and get kicked off, the only way to reconnect, for the brief period of time I am connected, is to turn off WiFi and then to turn it back on. which buys me another few minutes of connectivity.

Quite a pain, thankfully I have grandfathered unlimited plan, but I still feel like this should not be happening...

I read about this being an issue with other HTC phones, and things like wiping the cache through the recovery menu (some even so far as to wipe the entire phone) got things to work. I've only once been able to get through the recovery menu into the Wipe Cache menu, which is another annoyance only partially related to this topic.
Regardless, the one wipe I attempted did not do me anything.

Default HTC One keeps forgetting my home wi-fi details

My unrooted HTC One keeps forgetting my home wi-fi password. Once i put the password in again it connects and works fine, but it's getting very annoying having to put the password in every time. What's going on?

Default How do I turn off wifi discovery?

I am really getting annoyed at the wifi discovery notification popping up all the time, I just can't seem to get this turned off. I can always swipe it away, but it is back very soon. If I tap the notification, it takes me to an Android services app which won't disable (not sure if would want to anyway) and the checkbox for turning off notifications is greyed out so I can't uncheck it. In the wifi settings, under Advanced, the "Notify me" is already unchecked and there is no Network Notification checkbox there (it is only in the Android services, greyed out). There has to be some way to get rid of this thing without rooting.

EDIT: OK, I just got off the phone with HTC and they said that it can't be turned off on the Verizon HTC One. They said Verizon has opted out of that turn off feature since they want you to use wifi as much as possible to stay off of their network. Great.

I was having the same issues and every tech support person I spoke with thought I was crazy. The only solution I found was doing a master reset on the comcast cable modem. I hope it works for you because I understand how frustrating it is!

And I had pondered switching to Verizon from Sprint. Screw that...Verizon is last to get the cool HTC phones, last to update operating systems, and don't allow you to cut off a WiFi notification. Just stupid if you ask me.

Default WiFi Dropping Out When Phone Not In Use

I see several wifi threads but my issue isn't there so here goes.

Basically when I wake the phone I do not always see the wifi symbol. A second later, it appears, then connects. Trying to see if this is a problem or design behavior.

I have a Verizon HTC One, a week old (love it BTW) and an Asus RT-N66U router with firmware 3.0.0.4.270 (not newest but I'm loathe to upgrade because of reported issues), WPA2-Personal encryption, 2.4ghz. Strong signal (small house).

"Keep WiFi on during sleep" is ENABLED and "WiFi Optimization on Battery" is ENABLED.

What I've done/changed...

- Assigned a static IP on the router
- Set WiFi Frequency Band to 2.4ghz

Problem still persists.

My only concern here really is battery life. I'm on wifi mostly to preserve the battery (and use less data, natch). I don't really care if this behavior does not impact battery life but I'm guessing it has to.

Thanks for any input,

-kj-

Ummm...do you have "Always keep WiFi on during sleep enabled?" And is power saver for data disabled?

Default Issue with notifications on WiFi

Hey

The only thing that is actually giving me a problem right now is that when the phone is on WiFi, I don't get any notifications of Facebook messages or emails at all, for some reason. It might be some setting that I forgot I'd changed.
Any idea?

Edit: It's also constantly saying "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." It indicates that the problem is restricted to a Gmail account's calendar, though.
^That was fixed when I turned sync off for the calendar, but now I realise that autosync doesn't work at all, on WiFi or Mobile Internet. It only syncs once if I switch from one to the other.
Help!

Default Wifi stuck on Obtaining IP address! help!

Hello, everyone!
I'm using HTC One, a new phone I got half year ago, everything was so great, until this Christmas. After I reset my phone to factory setting, and started using it again. Problem happened, my Wi-Fi is stuck on obtaining IP address, scanning, and disconnect and loop continued. Cuz my Wi-Fi doesn't work, my phone keeps using mobile data, and my network usage has reached its limit!
Please, can anyone help me find what the problem is and fix it?
I tried to reset my phone, and my router, both doesn't work.
I've seen people suggest static IP, I don't like the idea.
Is there anyway that can fix this problem? All my friends are using Android and updated their systems, they don't have the problem except me
Please help! really appreciated!
Thank you!!!

I am on Sprint. I have the same problem. Actually a bit more annoying, because not only do I constantly get the notification, it even turns my WiFi ON. I turn the WiFi antenna off manually, because I know I am not in an area that will have WiFi that I can connect to. A little while later, I will look at my phone, and WiFi is turned back on, and I have a notification that there are WiFi networks available. Pretty sure it turns itself on, because I have the option for Wifi while sleeping, set to Always, since I want it to be able to grab any notifications or emails , but it seems odd that always overrides when I manually turn the antenna OFF. It seems logical to think that that option only relates to when you have WiFi on in the first place when the phone goes to sleep. If I turned it off, why would I want it to turn itself back ON when it goes to sleep?

The WiFi Network Notification option is not greyed out, but it doesn't actually do anything. If I put a checkmark in the box and exit out, when I come back to the settings, the checkmark is gone again.

So basically, if I have WiFi turned ON, it will ALWAYS notify me, no matter what I do. If I set it to allow it to keep the WiFi on when the phone goes to sleep, it takes that to mean, when the phone goes to sleep, turn my WiFi on, even if it was off when you went to sleep.

These posts about the wifi issues since kitkat should probably be moved to the kitkat thread so they can be addressed properly.

--I have not experienced these issues.
--Have you forgotten the WiFi network and re-added it?
--Checked for channel interference using an app like WiFi analyzer and changed channels if necessary?
-changed the frequency band the phone is operating on (2.4/5GHz)
--have you done a factory reset on the phone after the update?

I have an HTC ONE as well. Wifi reception is mediocre at best unless you are sitting in the same room within 8 feet of the router

I get great WiFi reception and it never drops, but sometimes it "hangs" and won't update new networks once I change locations. This SEEMS related to bluetooth, as normally I toggle that and this happens shortly after.

Default Slow wifi connection

I just added a Trednet 892.11 b/g/n AP to my home network to replace an outdated802.11 b/g WiFi router. It works fine, no connection problems but my connection speed is not much faster than it was before. Old WiFi connectedwith phone at 54mbps, new one at 72mbps. I have an old XP desktop in the basement with a usb WiFi adapter that connects at 144.5mbps. Why won't the phone connect faster when it is closer and has no obstructions between it and the AP? Any suggestions.

Default Wi-Fi always on

Wi-Fi won't turn off. Even though I manage to disconnect it, it turns back on almost immediately. I have tried many settings in Wi-Fi -> Advanced (including unticking 'Scanning always available') but still the same problem. I also renamed Wi-Fi Direct to HTC One (as seen on another forum). It's pretty unpleasant bucause charging takes longer sometimes

I know it's Google trying to help us by collecting our locations using Wi-Fi instead of battery worst enemy:GPS but..

The only time the Wi-Fi is (partialy) disconnected is when power saving is on and the screen is off.

I am running 4.4.2

Hello and welcome to our forums!

When you say it will not turn off, do you mean the icon turns itself back on? If that is the case make sure there are no WiFi widgets on the main screens (they can mess with the settings) and then verify you do not have any apps that require WiFi.

You can check app that require WiFi by looking in settings > location and seeing what apps have location permissions.

You can disable location services completely on this screen, restrict it to GPS only, or go into the individual apps and disable or uninstall the actual app. There is no setting to individually restrict WiFi usage though.

I have an HTC one with Sprint carrier but have the same problem with WiFi turning itself on. Notify is unchecked, WiFi optimization is unchecked, I've set it block certain Xfinity networks that I drive by often as well, but when I'm driving around using my phone GPS mapping I constantly get interrupted to sign into a WiFi network. I miss turn, drive by streets all the time because of this. It's not just the map because my kids watch YouTube when we go on drives and it still does it. Idt it's strictly a Verizon issue as suggested to another person's post. I've brought the phone into two different Sprint locations, spoken with Sprint tech support and called HTC support. Sprint techs say I must not be right because it's not supposed to do that. I say I know that's why I'm here complaining. HTC told me to send it to their repair center so they can check it out and they will fix or replace if needed but will leave me without a phone for 10-15 days. Any idea what if there's something they or I am missing?

All my sprint/vm phones had a crappy connections optimizer in the network settings. Not WiFi optimization. It liked to turn itself back on. See if you have that. Should be in your mobile network settings, or "more settings"

Default Wifi issue.

I had a problem earlier with low speeds on my BT Infinity so I rang BT. They sorted the problem (which only lasted 2 hours) and they told me to select forget wifi on my phone and tablet and then just re input the router password. I did this on my HTC One and now it won`t connect.

It authenticates and then saves the hub but simply will not connect. Has anyone got any ideas as it`s driving me mad? Thanks.

Oh and after a while it`ll then change from saved to authentication problem!!!!!
