I'm just hoping for a VZW release of the HTC Passion/Dragon before 1/1/2010 so I can finally cash in on the rebate cards (expiring 1/1/10) I've held for the past year or so. My company pays the monthly bills, so I've saved the $150 for when I can get the next device I want!! I don't care about Black Friday or Christmas... Jan 1 is my gotta-have-it-by date!
Plus to. Dont you think that they would release it after 30 days after the droid come's out so they dont get alot of returns on the droid for the passion?

I guess you could buy something by the 1st and that'll give you 30 more days.

Reason: cause
So I think that refutes the idea that the person who created it had privileged knowledge.
However, it is interesting to read that two month article again especially since two of the three releases mentioned have happened:
Quote:
Verizon is expected to cooperate with HTC to launch its first Android-powered smartphone, the HTC Desire, in the fourth quarter
The Desire was released as the Eris in the 4th quarter, check
Quote:
..Commercial Times said, noting that the pair will also launch a mobile TV handset, the Whitestone, in the fourth quarter.
The Whitestone was released as the Imagio in the 4th quarter, check again
Quote:
HTC is also likely to cooperate with Google again to roll out the next-generation Google phone, the Passion, in the fourth quarter, the paper added.
Hasn't happened yet, as we know, however all the chatter about a gPhone and HTC Passion pretty much jives with the idea of HTC working to bring about the "next-generation Google phone" aka "The Passion". Two questions still remain; Will this happen in the 4th quarter as the source speculates and which carrier(s)?

More likely 1st qtr of 2010. As for carrier, kinda has to be Verizon. I'm not aware of another company that has made quite the same agreement that VZW and Google announced. Releasing the Google phone on a smaller network would probably not have the same impact as Google would want.
The sad thing about this saga so far is the HD2 would be the king of phones right now, if it didnt have WinMo.
I believe it will come out before Christmas. Phones that are coming out in 2010 are well known and talked about (X10, HD2, Liquid, etc). They aren't as much of a threat to the Droid because their release date is far enough away (and they will probably be on non-Verizon carriers). I believe they have kept the Passion a secret because if they had announced it a month ago, it would have killed Droid sales, and resulted in a lot of returns. Just my theory....

Lending credence to Verizon trying to move Droids before a new launch: both my wife and I got text messages yesterday offering an early upgrade (not up until August) only for a Droid or a Blackberry Storm. Currently have the HTC TouchPro, and can't wait if the HD2 comes out on Android 2.0!! Will certainly wait to steer clear of Motorola.

thoughts?
correct me if im wrong but I thought that in an engadget review for the HD2 it is running WinMo 6.5? Sense UI is integrated so its not horribly different then some current android phones but I am 99% sure the HD2 is windows mobile.

HD2 is winmo...the passion, it the "same" device running android.
It's *supposed* to be running Sense UI on top of 2.0, but everything we think we know about the Passion right now is based on speculation or unconfirmed rumors.
Device(s): HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Verizon

i dont know whitey's sources but everything i have heard is that they are not making an android version of the hd2 but do hear rumors of and android device running 2.0 with the snapdragon so i am thinking it will be like the hero/eris also maybe thinner though who knows if it is as thin as the hd2 or looks just like it i would be happy even if the camera stook out a bit and made it un level

yea to be honest i don't have a "source" i thought the general consensus was that the passion was going to be a lot like the hero/eris. why would they release the exact same phone one with winmo and one with android?
I don't recall anyone officially stating that HTC was going to make an "identical" Android Version of the HD2.
As far as the hardware goes, yes, it sounds like there WILL be an Android Device coming that breathes life and total badassness, (Is that a word? It is NOW!) with a 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor, also possibly sporting the same size screen as the HD2.
The leaked picture of the "Dragon/Passion looks nothing like the HD2...Once again, proving (if real & a final physical design) that NO ONE ever said that an IDENTICAL HD2 Android phone was in the works.
Think of the all the rumors & news of an HD2 Android phone coming, not to be taken literally.
ONLY consider the release of HTC's Dragon/Passion Android Device as HTC's answer to the Windows Mobile HTC HD2 device.
Its a fairly easy concept to grasp.
An easy void(void where HTC produces an Android Device similar in Hardware to the HD2) that HTC, again I assume will eventually fill, and has had plans of filling, for quite some time.
It only makes perfect sense... (Get it? haha)
Why only produce smartphones with 1Ghz Snapdragon processors for only one Platform, like Windows Mobile?
Exactly, it doesn't.
The above is my opinion & what I believe.
I have come across several articles online where its almost instantly clear, that whoever posted an article relating to the HTC Dragon/Passion, has absolutely NO idea what they were writing/typing about.
If there IS a webpage where someone HAS claimed a PHYSICALLY Identical HD2 Android phone is coming, please correct me and post the link below.
The phone may not even be called Dragon or Passion. Time will tell.
Although I really feel that "Dragon" is a cool name & superior marketing name, could also support an awesome line of commercials...Followed by lots of $$$$ for Verizon, HTC, etc.
Look at all the Motorola Droid commercials...
The commercials deliver, and so does the Motorola Droid.
We are nearly in 2010, Computer Graphics can really yield some top notch & entertaining commercials.
Thank You For Your Time

So, I decided to stop by a Verizon store in Knoxville, TN on Black Friday. I waltzed right up to the service desk and asked the rep what he knew about the upcoming HTC Passion. His response was (and bear in mind, I'm paraphrasing) "I'm really looking forward to it's release. Android should run really well on Snapdragon."
Dunno if this counts for confirmation or not. He could just be another hopeful fan like us. Still, it's an encouraging sign.

That was encouraging to hear..thanks for posting it,because I too am waiting!!
Thanks again, but I hope I have mine before you have yours..hahaha..j/k
I am waiting for this new phone, but am hoping that the new device is very similar to their HD2, in that it has some hard buttons on the bottom of the phone. That is one thing I dis-liked about the Droid.
I would hope this would have the Sense UI over the Android 2.x as well.

To another here in East TN it sounds good to me. I have been meaning to stop by the Sevierville store. Have some acquaintances that work there so hoping they'll give a little info.

I stopped by a Verizon down by St. Louis, and asked a guy who I know is real good & knowledgable with Windows Mobile Devices and He said and I quote,
"The Passion is never coming to Verizon"
I also asked him when there would be an OTA for the Motorola Droid.
His reply, "Not anytime soon, probably never"
Yeah, I delibrately tested this guy. He even commented negatively when he saw a Moto Droid was now holstered on my brother's belt. My brother had returned an hTc imagio. (WinMo)
I agree with you, the guy doesn't like android. The way he was frowning and talking badly about the Moto Droid...trying to understand why my brother had problems with the imagio.
Just a tip to all which isn't meant to undermine those with positive news, but rather thwart those who get a sales guy who say "ain't gonna happen". The sales guys in the stores are the last line in knowing about an impending phone. They often know of the phone because they just got a shipment and not a second sooner. Most that hint at knowing something travel in the same circles online as the rest of us. Alot of times when you get "not coming" or "not coming anytime soon", it's usually based on past experience with Verizon which of late has done a total 180 in releasing new phones. These are the same folks that will tell you to expect certain features to be locked out, another outdated misnomer as it pertains to Verizon's smartphone devices. This is well proven by many accounts of dealing with the in-store sales staff. To date, the best info comes from business sales reps for Verizon. They tend to be more privi to stuff coming down the pipe. Any real info or leaks comes from testers who tend to be the "connects" on these mobile blogs. I, for one, put stock in the connect that reported to BGR that Verizon was aiming for the smartphone crown. He said Curve2 and Passion were vying for black friday and mid-Dec, whichever was ready first would get the first release. Well, the Curve2 hit on black Friday in stores. Go with the track record. I still think there will be radio silence on this thing for another week to prevent Droid returns. No FCC approval by the end of this week may not be a good sign, though.
I have faith in BGR. BGR has an outstanding trackrecord.
Its only a matter of time before we have some more news. And if not, I'll kindly wait.
hTc's Drew Bamford did say they are working on exciting things. Thats all I EVER needed to hear. End of Story.
@ kyler13
The same guy I spoke to @ VZW, was the guy who mentioned NO hTC HD2 but to expect the hTc Leo coming to VZW.
After my last conversation my brother & I had with him, we had a laugh as we walked out.
I listen to BGR much more seriously than ANYONE at a Retail VZW. Two different worlds!
No actual preemptive site would have that little detail on the source code.
If it is fake, and it probably is, I wonder what the owner is getting out of having the website up saying coming "holidays 2009"? What happens when the "holidays" get here and there is no phone, what then? Just not sure what the objective is aside from squatting, and if they are squatting, why put a graphic up? Oh well, all this rumormill speculation and investigation stuff is sorta fun.

I assume that when the site hits the requisite views/day they will slap some google ad-sense on there. Perhaps the biggest giveaway that it's fake is that the site has managed not to put the official verizon or HTC logos on the site probably to avoid being vulnerable to a cease and desist order for unauthorized use of a trademark.
Looks like there is a video on YouTube that says the pics of the passion are fake.
Well, that the last BGR report of a "high res picture of the passion" is fake, and really just a theme for a jailbroken iphone. The unlockr pics are still very much real. We have that, at the very least.

I agree with Android_LIFE in that BGR has a very good track record. They just didn't make it up out of thin air, but got the info from a trusted source. If I didn't have that confirmation, I would treat this as pure rumor.
And for what it is worth, a poster at the VZW Community forums, who seems to be somewhat in the loop, seems to confirm it as well. Re: HTC Passion - Verizon Community
Although, until we hear some sort of official confirmation, this certainly is all rumor and speculation right now.
The photo provided by theUnlockr that BGR posted up waaay before the iphone dash to me,
is all the proof that I need to know that SOMETHING from HTC, running Android, IS INDEED on its way.
That and the word of hTc's Drew Bamford where he mentioned that hTc IS working on some exciting...future device things. Although he was VERY vague & hush hush, Bamford didnt deny a future Android device.
I'm just sitting back waiting on the fireworks...that is, an official word by Verizon, hTc, and/or Google regarding this or any other similar device.

The pics of the device should be real. But pics of the system information screens may also be fake. But its really the main blogs reporting "such and such HTC passion", not the rumored HTC Passion, but they state it as fact. For some reason I think HTC is purposefully keeping quiet about the phone. Maybe due to a contractual reason, maybe because they are having more problems. If they aren't being purposefully quiet why not just come out and say they're not making it?
This is killing me. I just bought the Eris on Friday (my wife refused to wait and let me do more research) and while I like it, this phone seems SOO much better. I liked the Moto Droid, but hated the feel and the real keyboard.
So I've basically got until Dec. 27th for this phone to come out.......

You have till January 14th to exchange or return ....Just ask VZW they will confirm this.

Thats better news. Though I've got a sinking feeling that if its not out by Christmas it wont be very likely to come out before the 14th.
I have been waiting too for a little over a month now for it and almost got the Eris because I need a new phone..I am having a hard time waiting longer but I am waiting for the Passion or dragon or what ever they want to call it...just bring it out already...hahaha
Luckily I have until Feb. 1st to wait, though I would much rather have it by the 1st of the year.
Here's to hoping it's out by Feb. 1st, otherwise I might have to just go on ahead with the Eris (hopefully it's running Eclair by then) or the Droid.
True..I would rather have Eclair on the Eris than the moto droid if it does not show by then.I have been wondering who else will actually sneak a droid phone in the verizon stable other than who we know of,HTC etc.

Not that I know any release dates, but I've heard about the Vphone?
Also, not that it's android, but the latest in the rumor mill is that Verizon will get it's own version of the iPhone (slightly smaller) in June of 2010.
lol I've been researching what's the best phone to get on what network for some months. Want to make sure I have the best I can get at the time.
