Did some over- zealous fanboy make this or has the site truly been reserved by htc?

Definitely fake. It was put up by the owner of an android website to attract attention. I forget where I read it ... but it was clearly demonstrated to be bogus.

The guy who owns phandroid (Rob Jackson) owes that URL. I aksed him to address the issue. Nothing so far.

I'm going to get www.the-nexus-one-is-coming-to-verizon-on-jan-15th.com . I plan on making it look almost official. I will use this URL to driver people to my new android news site www.fake-android-news-website.com

It's Rob Jackson. He explains his side of the story here:
