Default Free Wifi Hotspot app?

Hello all. Just wondering if there is an app out there for the HTC Rezound that will let you create a free wifi hotspot (like the dozens of apps that work for other phones). I don't mind paying for the app, but shelling out 30/mo to big red for something I will hardly use would suck...

Thanks, but the only problem with this is I have to use bluetooth mode, which won't work for me because I am trying to connect my wife's iPad and in order to use foxfi I would have to jail break the iPad (which I don't want to do)...

In that case, rooting your phone will give you free wifi hotspot -- you'll be able to connect any device.

was really hoping to find one. foxfi doesnt work on any htc phones, which is crappy. 1-click wifi tether no root doesnt work either for some reason.

Definitely hear you. I'm not one to push ROOT ROOT ROOT on anybody -- I had my Droid Incredible for 2 years and only rooted it about 6 months before I got my Rezound.

Once I rooted, I did NOT get into ROMs... just a perfectly stock phone with the added advantage of having free hotspot capabilities.

Have not rooted my Rezound... once VZW drops ICS on us, I might consider it (mostly to remove all the crapware they have forced into my phone)

Good luck with your search!

I tried Foxfi for my HTC Rezound and it works great in bluetooth mode with my Asus Transformer Prime.

I wonder if it works with Ics as well. So foxfi only can be a hotspot with devices that have Bluetooth? I really want to use Xbox live thru it. Saw on the reviews that others were running their Xbox through it fine...hmm anyone do this? Also is verizon going to monitor me and throttle my data? I have unlimited and never use more than 4gb a month but Xbox would prob make it a lot higher.. hmm

The app description says it's fixed for the rezound with ICS, if that's so I might just go ahead with the leak as I might need it next week.
I tried to be nice with VZW and just pay to tether but use it for 5 days and 2 months worth of charges show up on the bill....even though I'm supposed to get it refunded that's just silly, your going to charge me for something I already pay for..then double charge me at that and waste my time calling in.

In my case, the updated version of FoxFi (ver 1.92.1)does now connect to the Rezound.

In the past, it wouldn't...

As it does now connect, I still can't get it to work... When I try the browser, it gives me nothing and Outlook fails to connect.

I have even turned off the AVG firewall and it still doesn't connect.

I'm not sure how to use the bluetooth selection. Everytime I active it, I can't connect to it..

so, if anyone out there is getting positive results, Please let me know what I am doing wrong...

Same here, it isn't handing out IP addresses like it should. wish they would fix it, with ICS I don't even see any reason to root other than that.

I tried Barnacle. It worked for me. Weird, because it would not work on my OG Incredible, but works on the Rez.

I found out that you don't have to pay for the month of you only use a day here or there. You just have to add the feature (hot spot) when you need it and remove it when you don't. You are billed for the month but the days you don't use the feature are refunded on your bill. Verizon said you can activate it and deactivate it as many times as you need to during the month. I use it when my home WiFi goes out.

This does not work on the Rezound...

It will pop up with a request for you to buy the hotspot service.

I didn't try Extended Controls since it's not free, but FoxFi worked in BlueTooth mode only.

I can't get BT to work on the latest ICS leak...

So, once the OTA hits (if ever) you may lose it.

Same here attempting BT DUN on .10 leak, I actually get the error message you'd get when you open the vzw app for mobile hotspot complete with VZW phone number....

So the FCC ruling didn't affect this yet? Or is it just not working on unlimited data plans?

I read that if you're on unlimited data, you can't tether without their hot spot service. If you're on a tiered plan you can use any app you want and tether away for free..

This is probably true. I'm grandfathered and FoxFI didn't work with the .10 leak and it doesn't work with the .12 RUU which is the same as the OTA.

WiFi Tether works for me. You have to change your device profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE and the setup method to Netd setup a passphrase and check Routing fix. I tried it a couple times before it worked for me, then it was perfect.

I had FoxFi installed on my Rezound once the update to ICS was done. When activated the computer would see the hotspot & connect to it but couldn't get onto the web. I went into the app in the Play Store and on the top of the screen where the install/uninstall button is there was a warning saying my device is not compatible with the app. When I originally downloaded the app that warning was not there. I'm running stock ICS on grandfathered unlimited data plan.

Yes, FoxFi has temporarily pulled compatibility for the Rezound well they try to figure out why it doesn't work with ICS because it should, it will show that and if you uninstall it you can't re-install it from the Play Store, but the link directly to their website should still work: http://foxfi.com/bin/FoxFiRelease.apk

Note that WiFi tethering is the problem, if you use BT it should still work fine.

Foxfi works fine over BT with pdanet tablet for my n7. However it only works for general web browsing and fb. I only wanted it for nexflix while on lunch at work, doesn't work.

The lawsuit was/is bs, they paid the feds (not the customers) and admitted no guilt. They say "unlimited" data plans are contracted in such a way as to put you in breech if you tether. I'm really not thrilled with vz lately. I know this forum doesn't like free tether talk but we pay for it, it's stupid to pay for unlimited data AND tethering. That's just stupid.

Lol I've been running Pandora on my phone while I sleep, volume off, just to eat up data, that's how crazy annoyed I am with vz.

Default Hot Spot

What people seem to be over looking is regardless of your data plan and the FCC the HTC Rezound comes factory with tetheringGuard. This app comes pre loaded and it is what makes that box pop up that says the hot spot feature must be purchased $30 monthly fee bla bla bla. The rezound will NOT have wireless hotspot feature ever for non rooted devices. The Only way to get around this is to root, then using superuser you can delete the app or atleast disable it.
The only way to get Wireless Hotspot is to remove TetheringGuard NO WAY AROUND IT. trust me i tried for hours and hours!!

Foxfi/pdanet tablet, my rezound and nexus 7 disagree. Works fine over BT and may work fine over WiFi if I get the settings right. No root needed.

FoxFi as a WiFi hotspot does NOT work on the Rezound (BT is fine), up through v1.91.3 (latest as of last night anyway). It is not a settings things at all, and FoxFi has pulled the compatibility flag with the Rezound until they can get it figured out.

If you need WiFi Tether right away, best to root and install Wireless Tether or Barnacle.

When Comcast goes down, I drive the internet on my laptop using the PDANet app plus the Rezound's USB data cable. It works very well. I get 12mpbs download speeds and 4mbps upload speeds on the laptop with the signal originating from the Rezound.

Now I am looking at getting the Nexus 7 tablet. My understanding is that there is no way to cable the Rezound to the Nexus 7. So my choices to drive internet on the N7 from the Rezound are to 1. Root the phone, thus enabling wifi hotspot, or 2. Run bluetooth signal to N7 using combination of PDANet Tablet and Foxfi apps, or 3. Pay Verizon for hotspot when I need it. Is this correct?

Are not the data transfer rate speeds for bluetooth dramatically slower than the speeds that I posted in the first paragraph? Bluetooth sounds like it would be a "slow" solution. Are there any other options for sending Rezound data to N7 than what I mentioned here? Thanks for your answers!

There is an app that allows you to stream from a USB drive, don't see why that wouldn't workto transfer files from the rezound to the N7. I can't confirm web speed using the bt foxfi because speed test app doesn't recognize the connection. It seems as fast as the phone when pulling up fb or web pages though. I've got strong 4g though. Phones been pulling 25-30 mbps down an 7-11 mbps up.

Thanks. That doesn't sound too bad. Guess I will just get a N7 and try running internet on it from my Rezound on blue tooth with PDANet tablet app and foxfi app. (I will have Comcast wifi 99% of the time which is very fast.) I think I was looking at standards for older versions of blue tooth when I said bluetooth was "slow". I now see that Bluetooth version 3.0 + HS has theoretical transfer speeds up to 24mbps, but apparently the "+ HS" part is critical. Just plain BT v. 3.0 is dramatically slower. I am not sure which Bluetooth versions Rezound and N7 have.

On another note, I edited my above post to note that I was using the PDANet app along with USB cable to run internet on my laptop from Rezound, not just the cable. Thanks for your reply.

Foxfi BT Dun no longer works on my Rezound. It activates the VZW mobile hotspot app. Anyone else having this problem?

Just looking to revisit this issue, has anyone found a free wi-fi app that doesn't require rooting the phone, that works with the Rezound? I haven't tried this situation previously, but just recently got an iPad and I'd love to tether it to my phone, if possible.

Edit - FoxFi is discoverable on the iPad, but never connects to my phone. When I switch it to bluetooth mode, it connects, but then the "if you'd like to enable tethering, contact Verizon at xxx-xxx-xxxx" message comes up on the phone, and it disconnects the bluetooth.

There is no "Free" way to tether to a stock non-rooted Rezound.

Your options are pony up the extra $$$ for the Verizon tethering service, or root and use any number of options... and if you are going to root, why not just flash in a JellyBean ROM? Most of them have tethering built right into the ROM.
