Default My Rezound experience and why HTC has lost me as a user

Let me start by saying, I purchased the Incredible on Launch Day, the Thunderbolt on launch day, and Rezound on launch day. My wife has an Incredible 2. I am the “Tech Guy” in my office that everyone asks what type of phone to go with. I have set up over 15 co-workers on HTC phones… So, I have been extremely loyal to the HTC Brand over the years.

The Rezound has been an absolutely terrible experience. Overall, my first 7-8 months, the phone worked as expected. I felt Sense had gotten a little heavy, but it was something I could deal with because I am a big fan of Sense.

In late summer, my phone wouldn't get a data signal. Wifi worked fine, but data was intermittent at best. I worked with a tech for several weeks with many phone calls and emails, finally the ICS update fixed the problem.

In January the phone died while I was using it. I tried to revive it, but it was completely dead (the phone was never abused). I had insurance, so they sent a replacement Rezound.

About a month ago, my drop down menu started coming down on its own, the only way to get the phone to work again is to lock the screen, then unlock it, after that you can navigate again. It has done this 20+ times a day for the last couple days. Apparently Verizon knows this is a problem with the latest software build.

HTC might make good phones in the future, but I’ll never experience them. I have never had a piece of technology so riddled with problems. I am going back to my original incredible and will be searching for another Android phone on craigslist. End Rant.

That sucks. Had some bad luck for sure it seems. I had an incredible, then rezound, now a DNA. Had no issues with any of them other than a dead pixel on my rezound that i swapped out. I now sold my rezound to a buddies g/f where its working great for her. I personally will still only buy HTC phones currently since none of the other makers have the phone I really want over the DNA/HTC. Ive tried alot of phones, including samsungs, and I just cant overlook the ugliness of the interface of the galaxy line etc.... Either way, good luck in your search.

I too was a loyal HTC user....

Jumped in with the original Incredible and loved it until I started getting the "low space" error... I found a way to fix and it worked for like a charm till I replaced it with the Rezound.

Now... I do love my Rezound... But it took me no less that 3 factory resets to get the thing operating like it should.... Now comes the thought that it will never make the jump to JB...

HTC frustrates me.... How can other phones... ie Samsung Galaxy s2 get JB... But HTC doesn't wish to allocate the resources to get the Rezound going... Why should a customer stick with HTC? I have been looking at the ONE if it comes to Verizon... But then I'm back in the "waiting" for software upgrades.... if they come at all.

HTC which gave me 2 updates for the Incredible (Froyo and Gingerbread) can't figure out how to push 2 updates to the Rezound is just bad customer service.

I agree with you. The hardware on this phone is still on-par with some of the new phones being rolled out. No question it could handle Jelly Bean. They just gave up on this phone.

I don't mind being a little behind on the updates if the software that is pushed to my phone is "Polished". The updates I received were terrible. Almost all of the gripes I have with the phone are software related (something I felt HTC had the edge on its competition not long ago).

So... I went with the Galaxy S3.

I'll be honest. I felt like it was over-hyped and didn't think it would "wow" me. It did.

Great feel. Hardware is solid, software is smooth and polished. The battery seems to be the biggest improvement that I can tell. Under heavy use, it doesn't have the huge battery drain issues I got with the Rezound. Happy with the switch.

I have been a loyal HTC "fanboy" since my TouchPro2, back when Sense was still called TouchFlo.
I followed HTC from WinMo to Android. Throughout my immediate family, we have had the TP2 (WinMo), Imagio (WinMo), Eris, Incredible, Incredible 2, Rezound and Incredible 4G.

This will be my last HTC phone. I love Sense the way it is. I love my big white flip clock with weather. HTC took Sense and with version 5, and turned it into TouchWiz.
I hate it.
I guess vanilla Android is next for me along with customer launchers and widgets.
Hell, I made a Motorola Atrix (boss supplied the phone - not my choice) look like an HTC device. I can go it again with something else.

I have my perfect phone in the DNA. Rezound was amazing but DNA was exactly what i wanted. I havent seen anything that appeals to me since. Samsung phones are still a no go for me as i hate their software so much, and the phones look and feel cheap. Ill stick with my DNA til the rumored DNA successor shows up.

I honestly think what dooms a lot of phones for getting updates is the carrier exclusives. It's much easier to make an update for 1 device across multiple carriers that only need minor tweaks in the CDMA vs GSM area instead of up to 5 separate ones because they're 5 different devices. It's sad, but true.

I am right there with you. I come from a long background of HTC phones. I have stayed loyal the entire time (until 3 days ago).

Your complaints with Samsung were the same things I would tell co-workers/family members when steering them to HTC phones. Software is better on HTC, more user friendly. Samsung phones feel too light and cheap.

The GS3 has changed my mind on these issues. I hated the software anytime I would use someone else's for a few minutes, everything felt too different. It took about 5-6 hours of really using the phone before I became comfortable with the software. Now, when I grab my wifes HTC phone all I notice is the "Lag" I always defended with my HTC phones. My biggest complaint with the GS3 was the keyboard. Downright awful. I downloaded Swiftkey and problem gone.

This phone feels super solid. It does feel light, but should that be a downside?

Overall I am super happy with the Galaxy S3 and glad I made the switch. But I'll go back to my original point, that HTC ruined a loyal customer by giving up on a phone (the Rezound). If it had been the phone I was expecting based on my previous positive experiences, I would still be a long-term user.

I completely agree with this. I think the days of phones limited to one carrier are numbered, and I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing.

we have a galaxy s3 in the family, ive messed with it alot, before i got my DNA to see if i wanted to burn an upgrade, it didnt do anything to warrant an upgrade from the rezound in the end (for me personally) i never had any major issues with my rezound other than i wanted a DNA that badly. After i got my DNA and used it for a few mins, it blows away the s3 in every aspect honestly. This isnt to say the s3 is a bad phone by any means, I just cant do the samsung interface. Sense is bloated yes, but on a DNA, its such a fast phone you never experience any lag. Atleast I havent. In the end, theres choices, and thats what makes android what it is. You dont have 1 phone maker with 1 OS look.

I was able to use a co-workers DNA several weeks ago. I liked the way it felt. The features reminded me of how I felt when I first got my Rezound. I was super excited about the minor tweaks. Little improvements to a software design I liked. I debated buying one outright on eBay.

But I starting thinking. The DNA reminds me too much of my Rezound. Great phone out of the box, but HTC will be releasing a new phone soon (HTC One), and they will most likely give up on the DNA just like their track record has been on every phone that wasn't a huge hit (I think the original incredible and EVO may be the only phones that fit into the "huge hit" category). If I am going to buy a phone, my hope is that it will at least get support for longer than one year. HTC is clearly behind in this category. For that reason, I am no longer loyal.

Yeah, I agree with the OP. I am very disappointed with my Rezound. The battery life is horrendous. I still can't get a full day after trying everything (new battery, reset etc.) And I don't even use my phone alot (no games, no web browsing, no texting) I take about 10 calls a day that last less than a minute or 2.
After using a buddies G3, I instantly understood what everyone was saying about the "lag" on the Rezound. The G3 was smooth as silk.
I am currently counting the days until my upgrade is available.

Exactly how I feel. I like my rezound but HTC is so busy trying to pump out new phones and dropping their old ones so quick that I will never buy another HTC again. Most people are stuck with their phone decision for 2 years. I would like to know that the manufacturer will stand behind that phone and support it for at least that long. This decision to rebrand almost identical phones and resell them under different carriers, rinse and repeat might serve them financially well right now but I suspect more people will say enough with this crap and jump ship to a company that puts out fewer phones with more attention to customer support.

Wow...woke up this morning to see that the friggin' POS Droid Bionic is getting tested for JB! Here I am rapidly approaching upgrade eligibility, and HTC has forsaken my Rezound. I had all of the problems one can have with this phone in the beginning. Two replacements and an extended battery remedied most of them. I was a launch date Incredible owner and loved it. I have my eye on the One, but worry that HTC is: a) circling the drain as a company b) scrambling so hard to catch up with Samsung that they have no choice but to abandon updates in favor of pushing out their next super phone to compete with the Galaxy line. EVERYONE that I know who owns an S3 loves it. Man...the S4 is gonna be hard to pass up. Or the rumored Moto X phone....

I'm agreeing with everyone here. I've had a few Verizon HTC phones and the initial impression was great. Worked flawlessly, felt like no lag, happy with the upgrades. I was stunned by the screen on the Rezound as well, so nice for a 'mid-grade' phone.

Then my 4G started cutting out all the time, requiring me to pull the back off and battery out so I could clean off the sim card and put it back in. PITA. Then having to wait forever for ICS, my gf's LG Lucid got it just about the same time we did! The battery life is absolutely horrendous because of the screen. Rooting the phone has helped the battery though. I was hoping to get the JB experience when I rooted, but even developers gave up on the Rezound last summer, and nobody even had a fully functioning ICS ROM...

I'm done buying verizon-exclusive phones, no matter who makes them. The only one I'd possibly consider is the Razr Maxx HD, but I think I'll just be waiting for the HTC One or possibly GS4, or whatever comes out next. No chance I'll go to the DNA, that thing is just huge and another verizon-only phone that will probably lose support as soon as they release the One.

I've been lucky. The only problem I have had with the Rezound is with the capacitive buttons. But I got a free replacement.

Wow my experience is almost exactly like yours. Had so many problems with it that i wont ever buy another HTC phone. One day while browsing the web it just powered off and wouldnt turn back on. On top of that the battery life was ridiculous. I ended up buying the S3 and there is no comparison! Wish i would have bought a razr in the first place when i was comparing it to the rezound.
