My friend has a HTC Sensation 4g, now usually I can handle issues myself, because I'm pretty good with these kind of things, but this is an issue I couldn't figure out. Her sensation takes screenshots every single time she clicks the home button, It's supposed to take screenshots when the power button and home button is clicked at the same time, it does this sometimes, but not all the time, when we reset the phone it works for a short time but pops up again help please!

I have no issues taking screenshots however the power button is always pressed "before" I press the home key.

To take a screenshot, press and hold the per button first and then press the Home button second. I do it all the time wrks with no problems

Hi, i seem to be suffering the same problem. I have noticed this has only recently started to happen after i did the last software update on my HTC Sensation. I have the pattern lock on my phone and every time i switch the phone back on to unlock and go into any of the apps or messages and come out of them using the home button my camera take a picture.....im guessing its a bug in the software update. It is suppose to only work when the power and home button are pressed at the same time (like the iphone) but i think HTC have got this one wrong slightly. It is also starting to wind me up as everytime i use my phone and press home it takes a picture.

Hopefully HTC/Android will be reading into these issues and in the next software update they will have rectified the problem....touch wood!!! as it is really put a downer on my fantastic experience with this phone so far!! Use to have an Iphone but im HTC and Android all the way now!!!

the phone takes a screenshot when home and power are pressed together...


so if your phone is doing it automatically everytime you hit HOME button it takes a screenshot.. just make sure that the power button is not depressed. play with the button a bit and it should work.


the button can get stuck sometimes with the phone cover.. given the fact that the whole cover comes off and the button is burried under it.

Again, the power button must be pressed "first", and then press the home key "after".

I don't think some people are understanding the issue here. It's not that they can't get screenshots to work, it's that they're working when they're not supposed to! Say I'm browsing my photo gallery. When I'm done I hit the "home" button to go back home. I'm not pressing power at all, but instead of taking me home it takes a screenshot. I try it again, get another screenshot. I have to get out of the app by pressing "back" instead of home.

Fair enough however "with so many people having the issue who are trying to press both buttons at the same time", who knows if they are actually causing the issue/condition using that method? Also, as stated, it could be an issue of a bad/stuck power button...or in other words, a "hardware issue". The Sensation's power button is on the flimsy side.

I am having this issue too. The issue is NOT caused by the power button being depressed, otherwise the phone would keep shutting itself down (which it doesn't) or putting the screen to sleep by itself (which it doesn't).

This is definitely a software issue that needs to be resolved, a quick Google of the issue shows how many people appear to be affected by the problem. It is incredibly frustrating.

If you are referring to djevo69's reply to you, I think he/she was saying "at the same time" just as a shorthand way of saying the steps to capture a screenshot. They said this to make a distinction between the CORRECT steps to capture a screen shot, and this faulty ISSUE that people are experiencing taking screenshots when they don't want to simply by pressing the home key, and not home + power.

But the second thing you said, about perhaps even though the user is not physically pushing on the power key it could be "stuck" enough to register that it's pressed so that a screen shot is taken may be the cause of the issue.

I never assume to know what someone implies, nature of my profession, which is why I'll always post in specific terms. Sometimes its the little things that cause the largest problems. That said, I made the distinction because it could be an issue where "by pressing both keys simultaneously" vs. "one key before the other", makes the phone go into a certain mode, whereby it only requires pressing the home key to take a screen shot.

FWIW, I have over 2 dozen screen shots and have yet to experience the posted issue, where an "unwanted" screen shot is taken...just to reiterate, pressing the power button "before" the home key, has proven consistently successful. Just placing blame on the firmware update may be over simplifying the issue. People with the problem may want to try a system restore, and the try taking a shot (using the proper method) before installing any apps, to see if the problem can be recreated.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never encountered the problem before or after hitting the power button. I'll be in my gallery, or web browser, or email, etc and I'll hit home to go out of that app, and instead of taking me home it takes a screenshot.

It doesn't matter how many screen shots you've taken using the correct method. I've taken several as well. But every once in awhile I'll still get that issue where I'll be in a certain app and can't exit it using the home button w/o taking a screenshot.

Roger that...but my point is that it could not be "just a firmware issue", given that we all have the upgrade, and not all upgraded users are experiencing the issue.

Hey guys, first of all let me say that I have the HTC Sensation, and I have this problem. With the addition that often times, when I lock my phone, the display comes immediately back on, but locked of course. What's bad about this is that sometimes, the display NEVER turns off in this case. The only way I know that this is happening is that my phone slowly gets warmer in my pocket. I have performed a factory reset on the phone with no results. I have also tried all settings combinations that I can think of, including stripping my home screen down to bare (and trying Launcher Pro) when I thought responsiveness could be a factor.

To all the people who are clearly incapable of understanding this simple problem, and claim that it is behavior as intended by the developers; please do not ever post on another support forum in your lifetime... I feel empathetic frustration for the previous posters of this problem.

That being said, I will put in my two pennies.

I believe that this problem is a combination of hardware and software problems. It will likely be something we just have to live with as long as we have this phone. That is unless the android developers/HTC developers can make it so that the software can handle the faulty power button behavior.

However, I have found a possible temporary solution after staring at the button underneath the cover for a little bit. I've found (at least I trick myself into thinking) that consistently pressing the power button down and to the face of the phone when locking/unlocking helps a lot. Such as what a person might naturally do when holding the phone in their left hand. I have always held my phone in my right hand in the past, and pressed the button differently. This may be completely bogus, but I've gone all day without a screenshot or flickering lock screen... which hasn't happened for a while.

My phone has this screenshot/home button issue too. All of a sudden the menu button morphs into a screenshot only button. Like a skipping record. Happens about once every couple of weeks.

Yep I have the same issue for the past month, almost once a day the home button acts as a screenshot button. I don;t have a cover and the power button is not stuck or being pressed.

hi my girlfriend has the same problem mainly when bat is low!(screen shot insted of home button) i don't understand the screen shot thing any way as as soon as you press the power button the phone goes to sleep, i have a phone shop with a sensation on display and my girlfriend has one i can not take a screen shot on either, but hers does it randomly please help as i am getting grief for selling her a phone that has a mind of its own!

this is odd..because with my htc sensation i Can't take screenshots at all!! whats my problem?? I am pressing the power button and then the home button but it doesnt do anything together, my home button will take me to the homescreen even with the power button down. I just can't take a screenshot. I NEED HELP

The screenshot feature only works with Android version 2.3.4. What version is your Sensation?

I am having this problem when I attempt to hit the home button as well. It's getting incredibly annoying because my gallery just fills with all screen shots..... I have had my sensation for almost 3 months, and this was happening occasionally at first, but has been progressively getting worse. The past few days it has happened 75% of the time I press home. Has anyone found any even small solutions to make it happen less often??!

Hi Folks,

I was reading the posts relating to the screen shot issue on the HTC Sensation which I also have seemed to developed the same problem now for at least a month now, and I have figured out that the moment I take the phone out of my BODY GLOVE Cover and try to re-create the error (screen shot) when pressing the home button, the problem does not re-occur again.
Which means that the cover might be applying just enough pressure on the power button which in turn causes the screen shot issue to occur, I think the cover problem might also be causing my phone to switch itself back on when I switch it off (i.e.) the screen into locked state and off, then the phone instantly comes on again but in a locked state. So, to conclude I think the my cover is actually causing the both problems.

Hey everyone,

I've been having this issue for the past few weeks now and I have determined it to be the sticky power/unlock button for these reasons:

• As mentioned earlier above, the phone screen will stay on the lock screen indefinitely. Instead, the screen should timeout and go off after the specified amount of time. For some reason this really taxes the CPU and the phone will get noticeably hot in this state. The power button being constantly held down would cause this to happen.
• When pressing the power button to lock the phone the screen will always turn off (like its supposed to) and sometimes come back on at the unlock screen. This is how I can notice if the button is stuck and helps prevent taking a ton of extra screen caps.

I have been using a gel case for awhile now and I first thought the case was holding down the power button. Unfortunately, I still have the screenshot problem with the case removed, though it doesn't happen as often.

What I have been doing lately is just trying to figure out when the button is stuck before taking those annoying screenshots. When I do notice that the phone brings up the unlock screen when its not supposed to, I click the power button again to un-stick it.

I haven't tried the earlier suggestion of pushing the button at a certain angle to prevent it from sticking but I will in the future.

Hopefully, this will be fixed via a future software update from htc.

I have a HTC Sensation with stock ROM and today i pressed the home button and it started to take snapshots which was very surprising for me. After reading this thread i tried the home and power button combo and found that screen shots are possible. So i m guessing that at that time my power button malfunctioned and by just pressing home button i was able to take snapshots.

Whenever this happens, a service called scribble (com.htc.mysketcher) starts running. Lets hope the power button issue does not appear again.

I'm curious as to what the power button alone does when its pressed by itself, i just learned how to take screenshots and i have no problem at all...

I had the same problem, defo the gel case slightly depressing the power button resulting in the screenshot feature of 2.3.4 being activated.

FIXED by using a surgical scalpel to neatly remove the section of the gel case covering the power button.

I have had similar problems with my Sensation which just started about 4 weeks ago. It kept jumping in and out of sleep mode when I depressed the sleep button and intermittently taking screen shots when i pressed the home button. I sent my phone back to HTC UK who checked it and stated they had found no fault! However when I got the phone back the same issue existed. I received a pro forma receipt for the 'repair' with no detail as to what steps had been taken to fix the issue.

Reading the posts I think there is definitely an issue with the power button which seems to be exaggerated when I am using a gel case. It seems HTC either are unaware of this issue or are not acknowledging it as there was no mention of this during contact with HTC by email and phone conversations. Also no mention on their trouble shooting section on the website!

This is such a shame as before this issue surfaced I was very happy with the phone!!! It seems that this is an issue which we may have to live with! My phone seems to suffer much less when I use it without the gel case and I think cutting out the section round the sleep button on the case should prevent the problem. Thanks for the suggestions!

i read that with the ice cream sandwich update, screenshots will be taken using the volume down button rather than the home button. that should help

I've been having the same issue, with the screen shots and display not turning off. Just called Orange tech support and they ran a 'diagnostic test' and determined that there is a software fault with the phone, so they are sending out a replacement. They tried to get a £15 admin fee off me though, told them where to shove that, not paying for something that isn't my fault.

I had this issue and I pressed the same sequence: home button while pressing the power button and the problem stopped for me. Seems it might get stuck in screenshot mode sometimes when you hit both buttons at the same time. Just press both again at the same time and the issue should stop.

I had the same problem, after reading this forum I took the back off of the phone and cleaned the area of the power button with compressed air. NO MORE SCREENSHOTS by pressing the home key alone. Problem fixed

HTC Sensation home button taking screen shots. This happens to me whenever an Internet programme like HTC Sense Dashboard, locates my phone using GPS, every time!

Only way to stop this is too reboot

I took the back off of mine and cleaned the button area on the phone and the push button on the back. Hasn't done it since.

I had the same problem for about 2 months. The phone also wouldn't go to sleep mode when I hit the power button; it would go black for a second then come back on to the lock screen. However, yesterday I received an HTC system update that fixed this issue along with a few other things. This is HTC version 1.50.531.1. Hopefully, you'll all get it soon. Thanks.

I've had my phone now since Oct 17th 2011. My phone has been capturing screen shots after about 4 days from when I bought it. I sympathize with Decibelcooper. Every 10 min I find myself capturing screens by pushing the home button. Also, my locked home screen pops up after seconds from locking it and stays on forever until I keep messing with it to keep it off. In fact, my phone has over heated from being on too long while charging and the phone shut itself down because of it. I have not updated my phone at all since buying it so I do not believe it to be any thing to do with updates. I am convinced that it is solely because of the power button and it being so flimsy. I think that it stays depressed or at least depressed enough so that it takes pictures and keeps it from sleeping or on standby. You have to hold the button in in order for the phone to turn off or restart. Sometimes when i have to repeatedly play with the power button my restart turn off airplane mode options will come on, even if i'm not holding the button in. The bottom line is that the power button is faulty.

In order to get the phone to stop taking pictures, you have to first play with the power button; push it in and out a couple of times before pushing the home button. It's incredibly annoying and bc I paid full price for my phone ($449.99 + tax) I'm beyond mad.

Please, If anyone has had the issue fixed and fixed completely, let me know. I'm taking pictures of my phone at lease every ten minutes or less.

I have been having the same problem. I was advised to put the phone into safe mode and when i did that, the problem went away. So then i worked through which applications i had downloaded from the Android Market and it seems that the QR Droid App may have been responsible. I have uninstalled it and so far so good.
Bugger. That didnt work either. I am going to have to do a factory reset

I am having the exact same problem with my phone, had it serviced for it. Home button=screenshot and the phone is turning way too hot. By reading this thread, I am pretty sure I understand why. Appearently they changed the whole mainboard, so it seems like they are unaware of the issue. Got the screen shot problem again today, hopefully it's only a minor hickup this time.
